High school experiences become memories as seniors look toward the future. Opening 3 This building was completely destroyed by fire on December 15, 1924. Princeton High School has always been based on the traditional high value of education. It has also kept up with the times by growing and remodeling whenever it was neces- sary to meet the needs of its stu- dents. On April 23, 1866, a committee was organized and applied for a charter that was granted by Governor Og- lesby on February 5, 1867. The building, one of the oldest township schools in the state, was erected in June and dedicated to the people of Princeton August 27, 1867 at a cost of 36000. The first enrollment consisted of 130 students and in 1870, 15 students be- came the first to graduate from Prin- ceton High School. The first princi- pal was Henry Boltwood. The building was remodeled and en- larged for the first time in 1894 and again in 1908 to meet the needs of increased enrollment. On December 15, 1924, the building was completely destroyed by fire from an unknown cause. Classes continued in the city hall, the post office, and the Christian and Mission Covenant churches for the next year and a half. The new school was opened Septem- ber 27, 1926 at a cost of S400,000. It was 350 feet long and 100 feet wide. There were twenty classrooms and a library, an auditorium that seated 1,1003 chemistry, physics, and bo- tanical laboratories: a science lec- ture roomg and a gymnasium. In 1958, the Prouty Building was ad- ded. The building was named after Charles and Katherine Prouty after S350,000 of the Prouty Estate was donated toward the addition. The board sold S725,000 in bonds which was paid back in ten years. Addition- al taxes and levies amounting to S160,000 paid the rest. The total cost was 31,235,000 At the same time that the Prouty Building was added, remodeling was being done in the main building. Since industrial arts, agriculture, band, vocal music, art, and acafete- ria were now being housed in the new addition, the rooms which had housed them before in the main building were converted to other uses. In the seventies, more remodeling was done. An English Building was constructed in 1970 at the south end of the main building to relieve crowded conditions. This was the first air-conditioned building on campus. Later the auditorium seats were replaced. Two houses across the street on the corner of Central and Euclid were aquired. Both houses were torn down in 1984 to make way for a parking lot. The latest addition to Princeton High School is the new science wing with an anticipated completion date by late spring at a cost of 2.4 million dollars. The purpose for this addi- tion is to update the science depart- ment for educational and safety rea- sons, to conserve energy which i: lost when students open doors tc pass between buildings, and foi handicap accessibility. This additior will make it possible for students tc go from the main building to the Prouty Building without going out- side. There will be three floor: which will be connected to the mair building. On the first floor will be 2 TMH CTrainable Mentally Handi- cappedb room and two classrooms On the second floor will be two biol- ogy rooms, a green house, a science display area, an office for the teach- ers, and another science classroom On the third floor will be the physics and chemistry rooms and a class- room. In the main hallways on al. three floors will be lockers whicl will put the half sized lockers out o: use. There will be a basement whicl' will allow students to reach the bot- tom floor of the Prouty Building. A wheel chair ramp is to be construct- ed from the edge of the track to the first floor of the addition where a sei of bathrooms will be built. The addi- tion will have three full sets of stairf and the stage has been expanded foi a scene shop and storage space There will be a hallway from thi third floor to the balcony of th Prouty Gym. The whole system is set up so that the handicapped will not have to climb any steps to reaclr any part of the building. Princeton High School has come a long way since 1866, always chang- ing to meet the educational needs oi the times. Fad and Fashion 7 Fads And Fashions Time will come and time will go, but as long as there are people, fads and fashions will continue to grow. The history of today's fads and fashions can be traced as far back as the beginning of the Nineteenth century. The 1920's started off the era of the flappers. They wore dresses made of beads, usually accompanied by a boa. The next decade brought about a greater interest in woman's head attire. Besides hats, the straight ankle length skirts appeared. Later in the 1940's the emphasis traveled all the way down to the feet. Sandals known as Huaraches became popular, and soon after that came shoulder pads, which gave the wearer a more masculine appearance. After the war, came the carefree Fifties. During this time poodle skirts and saddle shoes were worn, and hula hoops became the rage. In contrast with the carefree Fifties, came the movements of the Sixties. Bell bottom pants and long hair were mainly associated with this time period. Yet in the Seventies the trend made a drastic turn towards mini skirts which were worn while discoing. Now in the Eighties many of the fashions and fads from earlier decades are being brought back. For instance, fashions include pedal pushers, mini skirts, paisley prints, long coats, padded shoulders, hats and penny loafers. A few of the fads of the Eighties are playing hackey sac and collecting designer watches. Fads and Fashions are good indicators of the times. It's hard to say what the future will bring to the fashion scene. 8 Fad and Fashion Laurie Weissman and Dulcie Hunt pose for the camera to show off some of the latest fashions - Dulcie's paisley shirt and Laurie's stirrup pants topped with over- sized shirt. Also seen at P.H.S. were broaches which were worn on coats and sweaters. Caught at a Student Council Meeting, Melinda Eckberg seated between Angie Hayes and Sheri Lamers, nervously displays her broach. Wednesday brought PeeWee's Big Adventure and a bunch of real nerds to the halls of P.H.S. A great number of celebrities showed up on Thursday when Trading Places was featured. The big day arrived with a double feature. In the morning it was Blue Thunder with blue and white dressing. It was announced Pam Shriver smiles for the camera on Nerd Day. that the Sophomores had edged out the Seniors in a heated spirit link competition. Then it was time for A View to Kill parade, pep ral- ly, and game. At Soldiers and Sail- ors Park, all the classes joined in cheers and the school song as the Tigers prepared for a victory. This 1985-1986 edition of the girls basketball team was something very special. They tied for most victories in a season with twelve, won their own holiday tournament, won the regional championship for the sec- ond straight year, and won their first game ever in the sectional tour- nament. The Tigresses were led by MVP Angie Noble, Brenda Blohm-most improved, and point guard Rachel Robinson. The rest of the starting 'six' cast included three seniors who completed four years of basketball and were instrumental in many of our victories. This group consists of Melissa Gibbs, best at drawing fouls, Kim Lorenzen, best free throw shooterg and Amy Smith, best jump shot and scorer from outside. 32 Girls Basketball GIRLS BASKETBALL RESULTS Putnam Count St. Bede Ottawa Geneseo Atkinson Streator Amboy Marquette LaSalle-Peru Mendota Rock Falls Dixon Sterling Hall Western . Tenacious defense coupled with an aggressive patterned offense earned them second in their own Thanksgiving Tournament, fourth at the Macomb Holiday Tournament, and third in the al- ways tough North Central Con- ference. Despite injury and illness, the players rallied putting forth a su- per effort. Their determination and hard work were rewarded by winning the Regional Champion- ship. The P.H.S. madrigal singers and cast take you back in time to the English Renaissance and the age of Queen Elizabeth I. This year marked the fifteenth year of madrigal dinners under the direction of Mr. Tom Crane. The dining room of the Elks Lodge was transformed into Hatfield House where Elizabeth was informed that she was to be Queen. Guests were made to feel at home as they dined on a four course meal and were entertained by the court jesters, jugglers, and madrigal singers. Each skit was humorous in a clever way and the pace was lively and energetic. The cast wore a uniform costume with girls dressed in Forenza sweaters, black skirts, black shoes, and beads. The boys wore colored dress shirts, black slacks, and black shoes. Props were added to the costume depending on the character in the skit. The set was modeled to look like a carnival background with shiny ribbons hanging off the curtains in a semi-circle and balloons on each side. In the center on the back of the stage was an ensemble of four playing jazz and background music. ,dv 'vxf md Xtra. . The time seemed to pass so slowly, but now we look back and wonder where it all went. There were times we laughed and times we cried and times we wondered if we'd ever make it through. Times as 'freshmen we couldn't' find our classes and the seniors would direct us to take the elevator to the fourth floor and go past the swimming pool. Times when we'd trip up the stairs or drop our cafeteria trays. Times when we wished the earth would swallow us whole. At times we wondered if it was really worth it. Times when we heard the track coach yell, Up to the linel' to get in front of our give a speech. Times didn't quite work out basketball coach said wrestling coach said, There were times we ' Times when we had English IV class and when our physics lab . Times when the , Suicides or the Spinners thought we were on top of the world. Times when we made the winning play in the big game. Times when we finally got behind the wheel of a car by ourselves. Times when the right girl finally said, Yes, Times when we, the few, the healthy, watched everyone else take SCII1eStGI' tests. There were times of despair and times of frustration. Times when we wondered if we'd ever get through Return of the Native. Times when our ACT score fell short, times the shot was long. Times when we drew a blank. Times when 'everyone else' was invited. There were times we couldn't take any more. Times we got caught 'showing affection' in the hall. Times when the practice was at six in the morning. Times we forgot a locker combination or misplaced a book. Times when everyone was looking at US. There were times, towards the end, that we just put up with. Times of trying on caps and gowns. Times of practicing iof all things! walking. Times of listening to a great-aunt saying, My, how time flies! Times of tears and sad good-byes. Through all the times, whether good or bad, we survived and helped each other. They were four years of feelings and memories that will last forever. We made it, and now we're moving on to new times, but we will never forget our time spent at P.H.S. Then it was off to dinner at a special restaurant. Dancing at the country club began at eight o'clock and lasted until eleven o'clock. A highlight of the dance was the naming of the 1986 Prom king and queen, Jeff Julian and Amy Smith. A large audience watched as the prom-goers premiered at the court house. Ending the night was a breakfast dance at the Elks club. All of these things made Prom a night to remember.
