Coach Holler Insert: (absent when picture was taken C Swanson.) PHS Basketball Team Kept Trying For the 1973-74 Tiger basketball team nothing would go right. In fact, one could call it just plain UNLUCKY. Injuries and illness and bad breaks contributed to the Tigers losing 7 games by a total of only 24 points. Possibly the 5 best games of the season were against Hall (Hall was favored with a 7-1 record and the Tigers beat them 59-47). Winnebago (The Tigers were down 19 points at half time but fought back to within one before losing in the final minute. Tom Diller had 31 points). Rock Falls, (The state-rated Rockets were behind almost the entire first half before their depth finally overwhelmed the PHS cagers.), Strea- tor (The last win for the Tigers, 74-69, produced a fine team effort. Dave Lasier netted 26 points.), and St. Bede (At one point the score was 32-9 in St. Bede’s favor, but the Tigers put on a tremendous onslaught of desire and hustle. The effort fell short again but not until an excit- ing game was completed.) Other members of the team included Rick Sapp, the high scorer whose high game was 26 against Morris. Brad Taylor and Dave Darling each scored 15 against Limestone and Putnam County respectively. Both provided outstanding defensive play. Dave Lowdermilk. a sophomore, was the team's 6th man with a 19 point performance against Geneseo. Cliff Swanson and Paul Johnson also aided in the back-up roles. Joe Durbin, Keith Scherer, Ed Eckhoff, and Ed Reynolds rounded out the squad. If one thing could be said about this team it would have to be that they never quit and gave up. It seemed they played just good enough to lose.
