S Slagel Together As a Team To look at the 1973 football record, one would probably call it a season full of hope. Certainly it was not the record we had hoped for or expected. However, it was nothing to be ashamed of. Even though the Hall Red Devils finished in the top ten III. prep polls, the Tigers gave the Conference champions a very good game. Many Geneseo fans stated that the Tigers gave the undefeated Maple Leafs their best game. The Tigers also had a good outing against the Rochelle Hubs, a team who suf- fered only one defeat. At Chilli, the Tigers beat the Grey Ghosts 24-12, as our defense scored 12 points on a fumble and an interception. At home, the Tigers came from behind to score a fourth quarter victory over Rock Falls. Certainly with the returning nudeous of Juniors, and the underclassmen coming up. Princeton's football future is optimistic. 18 ... in Victory And Defeat Picture 1 Tackles. Row I: $ Slagel. G. Fensterman. R Wall. M DeVore Row 2: M Seidel. T Smullmg Picture 2 Guards. The Frosh Go Undefeated The sophomore and Freshman Football Teams completed a very successful 1973 season The Sophomores were victorious in their first five games winning by a great margin. The next three games they lost, but only by a few points Their Iasi game was a great comeback by beating Morris. 57-0 The freshmen had an impressive 7 wins and 1 tie record. Each game they played was great but they feel their game against Mendota was the best. The Freshmen did very well without 8 members who were on the Sophomore team Each of these teams proved to be the beginning of a great varsity team in later years. ?i Varsity And Frosh-Soph Names 1 Varsity. Al Taylor and Pat Hodge, over 700 miles. Bob Storm. Tom Arch, and John Timberlake over 600 miles and Tom Diller and Keith Scherer each over 500 miles These nine were the varsity, with Eric Scott seeing limited running during the season, due to an injury j The entire season Mr Coates drove the team hard but succeeded in gaming respect and confidence from the Tigers, unequal to any other coach Next year looks bright for the Tigers, because of Mr Coates's coaching and the entire team s return except for Storm Diller. and Scherer The frosh-soph team who finished with a 5-5 record, will help the team along with Eric Scott and Tim Swan 24 Varsity Team, Row 11 to fc E Reynolds. PHS Basketball Team Kept Trying For the 1973-74 Tiger basketball team nothing would go right. In fact, one could call it just plain UNLUCKY. Injuries and illness and bad breaks contributed to the Tigers losing 7 games by a total of only 24 points. Possibly the 5 best games of the season were against Hall (Hall was favored with a 7-1 record and the Tigers beat them 59-47). Winnebago (The Tigers were down 19 points at half time but fought back to within one before losing in the final minute. Tom Diller had 31 points). Rock Falls, (The state-rated Rockets were behind almost the entire first half before their depth finally overwhelmed the PHS cagers.), Strea- tor (The last win for the Tigers, 74-69, produced a fine team effort. Dave Lasier netted 26 points.), and St. Bede (At one point the score was 32-9 in St. Bede’s favor, but the Tigers put on a tremendous onslaught of desire and hustle. The effort fell short again but not until an excit- ing game was completed.) Other members of the team included Rick Sapp, the high scorer whose high game was 26 against Morris. Brad Taylor and Dave Darling each scored 15 against Limestone and Putnam County respectively. Both provided outstanding defensive play. Dave Lowdermilk. a sophomore, was the team's 6th man with a 19 point performance against Geneseo. Cliff Swanson and Paul Johnson also aided in the back-up roles. Joe Durbin, Keith Scherer, Ed Eckhoff, and Ed Reynolds rounded out the squad. If one thing could be said about this team it would have to be that they never quit and gave up. It seemed they played just good enough to lose. Left: Dave Lasier; All-Conference. All-State honorable mention Ri|ht: Rick Sapp: All-Conference honorable mention. Above: Seniors: J. Durbin, K. The grap- piers finished with a seasonal record of 10-11-1 in dual meet competition. However, due to numerous close meets the team felt that they had a better season than the record would indicate. Princeton's varsity matmen started the season off with a dou- ble victory over Streator and Polo. The team then suffered a defeat at the hands of a very capable Rochele team. After easily overpowering Peoria Heights, the team suffered two defeats, both by a narrow margin, to Chili and L-P. The Mendota meet, which ended in a 27-27 deadlock, was fol- lowed by three consecutive victories. The Freeport and Alleman wrestling squads proved to be too much for the Tigers to handle, Our grapplers suf- fered severely at the hands of both. The remainder of the season was divided into an even number of wins and losses. , Under the able leadership of Coach Steve Todd, the Frosh-Soph team finished with an excellent 15J dual meet record. Todd's matmen also did well in- dividually. Dennis Michaels, Dale Anson, and Dan Hopper won 3rd place spots at the Sophomore NCIC. Jim Ellis, Steve Hartwig, and Tim Conkling placed 4th. Dan Hopper took home a 1st place from the East Peoria Tournament, a very challeng- ing tourney. Other places won were D le Anson 2nd, Jim Ellis 2nd. Tim Conkling 3rd, and Bob Senior Wrestlers. Our varsity and frosh-soph track teams experienced one of the best seasons in the history of our school. Winning the District meet and placing first in seven other meets, neither team placed lower than third. The second place finish in the conference is thought to be the most points ever scored by our school. Fourteen varsity and frosh-soph records were equalled or bet- tered this year and ten of these record holders made their way to the state meet held in Charleston. Back the Tigers!! Most schools think that their cheerleaders are the best but they aren't because ours are. Ours can stand on their heads and do flips. They practice a lot. They do jumps and make faces at their reflections in the win- dows. Until 5:00 every Thursday they scream T-l-G-E-R-S and practice mounts and get sore. They want to be the very best. So they buy brand new socks and get their uniforms cleaned. Then one day they go to clinic and do a cheer. And the judges say they are too good. So they cry. Speak-Easies Lori Simon State Finalist Speech team was reorganized this year at P.H.S. Under the direction of Mr. Martinkus, fifteen P.H.S. students participated at five speech contests, including the NCIC speech contest and district speech contest. At the NCIC meet, Princeton placed 6th out of 11 schools. At district, Princeton placed three finalists; Lori Simon, Scott Berfield, and Bill Nelson. Berfield and Nelson received fourths, but Ms. Simon received a third and thus was able to move into the sectional competition. At sectional, Lori received a second place rank and moved into the state finals. The groundwork was broken this year for future speech teams, and it is hoped they will surpass these first gains. 71 Rosie! PHS' Own “Turkish Delight” ■t 6 ' ' o 1 APS Club Kneeling: M EdgeHey. S Scardon Achievements, be they many or scant, are still achievements This year we set out to make many. Members of the Student Council, before school was out last year, began work on this year's totally revised Student Handbook. When this school year did begin, work on the Homecoming Weekend commenced al- most immediately. However, the year was not all achievements. Some things that the Studeht Council set out to do were over-ruled by the faculty. The initial work in these areas has. at least, begun. It is our hope that future Student Councils follow the meager path we strolled, and make it a well-traveled road. Michael Fisher 79 1 Concert Band Row 1: K. Oouglas. C. Hanna, C. Goers. D. One to Go 131 1972-1973 STUDENT REGISTRATION PACKET State Universities in Illinois wmm Class of 1974 Bids Farewell The following pages contain many faces; faces of people who have shared their lives with each other. As a member of this class, I feel honored that these people have helped me mature, develop and grow as a person, and I hope that they too have grown from what I have given them. Al- though it is known that time passes the same for all peo- ple, these past few years have gone too quickly for us. There is a certain sadness in knowing, and also in realiz- ing, that never again shall we be as close to so many as we are now. Perhaps this is the last lesson we can give ourselves; the lesson of leaving our best friends. As this class turns away from graduation and faces a new begin- ning in life, I cannot help but feel that from interpersonal relationships as well as academic exposure, we have been so richly educated. These things and many more will always be im- portant to us as we say good-bye to PHS. 154 V Walk Together. Talk Together Participation In Change f; « Index Akers. Theodore. 22. 28.38.114 Albury.
