These skills do come to the boy who has the perseverance to continue to practice, and who mentally strives to practice the correct way. We endeavor to offer a competitive program that will allow an opportunity for individual as well as team effort. In- dividual success has been achieved by members of the cross country team and wrestling team, as well as by members of the football and basketball squads. These attainments are a tribute to the coaches' knowledge of the game and to the boys' desire to excel. Our great country was built by competitors; we do not wish it to be destroyed by noncompetitors. The athletic program at P.H.S. is directly concerned with maintaining the competi- tive spirit. —Mr. King P.H.S. Athletics P.H.S. FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF. Varsity Football 1970 The fighting Tigers made a valiant go of it in the 1970 season. Hard work and desire were the trade- marks of this year's team, which finished up 4—5 against some very fine football teams. Playing for the first time in two years without Bud Kittler and James Howard, Varsity standouts who had graduated, the 1970 Tigers encountered the Grey Ghosts from Chillicothe in the season opener at Bryant Field. Chillicothe fought back from an 8—6 deficit at half- time to gain a 20—8 victory over Princeton. After another loss at home in the mud, against Kewanee —a game in which Tadd Sutton ran for 111 yards—the Tigers traveled to Spring Valley to play the Hall Red Devils. Sutton ran for three touchdowns on gains of 66,16, and 5 yards, and ended the night with 152 yards. The game ended Prince- ton 30, Hall 8. Heartened by their first victory, the Tigers ventured to Rock Falls to take on the Rockets, on a very cold and rainy night. Princeton scored two quick touchdowns and took a 14—0 lead into the dressing room at the half. The second half was all Rock Falls as they scored 15 points to Princeton's none, and won their first game of the year. In Mendota the next week Princeton again met misfortune and a fired-up Trojan team on their Homecoming, losing 22—12.(Continued on Page 50.) 49 CENTERS AND QUARTERBACKS BACK ROW: Quarterbacks D. In Princeton's Homecoming game against Rochelle, the Tigers resur- rected the shotgun offense. Surpris- ing the Hubs with the number of receivers, and spreading out the de- fense, the Tigers upset the Hubs, 16 —14. A hard-fought battle it was with Seniors Bill Ruberg and Tony Pazos receiving several defensive accolades. The next week State-rated Geneseo rolled over PHS 46—14. Traveling on the next week, the Ti- gers defeated a tough Morris team, 24—18. In that game Junior Dan Ellberg ran back a Morris kick-off FULLBACKS. LEFT TO RIGFfT D. Whit- lock, T. Sutton, B. Paxton. In his final game, Tadd Sutton ran for 174 yards, 125 of them in the first half. Final statistics revealed Fullback Tadd Sutton finished third in our division of the Conference with 683 yards rushing. He was also second in scoring with 90 points. Freshman Football 1970 Most freshmen at Princeton High School participate in organized football for the first time in their lives. They come to their first prac- tice oblivious to the intricacies of the game. Under the direction of Coach Steve Matthews, the boys learn the fun- damentals of the game. Success in terms of games won is not the most important part of the freshman sea- son; but the effort produced is, and the 1970 freshmen were not lacking in this department. 53 FRONT: K Marsh, C. The 1970 edition of the Princeton Varsity cross country team com- plied the best cross-country record in the school's history. They lost only one dual meet, and with only one exception they never placed lower than fourth in any of the in- vitationals they participated in. The harriers were off to a flying start as they defeated Illinois Valley in their first meet of the year; and after trouncing Kewanee, the Tigers journeyed to Ottawa, where they placed first out of 23 schools. Next came an easy win over St. Bede, fol- lowed by the Geneseo Invitational, where they placed first with 11 schools participating. Following two successive victories over Rock Falls and Mendota, the Tigers had to face the traditionally tough Ot- tawa squad at Wyaton Hills Golf Course. Aided by running on their own course, and inspired by the dream of an undefeated season, the harriers ran one of their best races of the year as they defeated Ot- tawa. Cross Country, 1970 Their hopes for an undefeated sea- son were smashed, however, the following week at Dixon. Still rid- ing high after defeating Ottawa, the harriers were outdistanced by the Dukes. Determined to come back, the Ti- gers won a triangular with Mendota and Streator, and then placed an ex- cellent ninth of 39 teams at the very tough Peoria Invitational. They continued their winning ways as they: won the Kewanee Invita- tional, defeated Geneseo, placed third at the Sterling Invitational, and won handily over LaSalle-Peru. The tough Conference meet was next, which the Tigers had been aiming for all season. With possibly their best team effort of the year, the Tigers captured the NCIC crown. It was the first NCIC Cross Country championship in the school's history. Top finishers for Princeton were: Storm, first; Purvis, second; Ringenberg, fifth; Scott, ninth; and Halberg, twenty-third. At the District Meet the Tigers ran The Dynamic Duo does it again. very well, but placed second, be- hind Ottawa. This earned them the right to advance to the Sectional Meet at DeKalb, where they just missed going to the State Meet as they placed fourth out of nine teams. Co-catains Geno Storm and Kent Purvis both finished in the top ten at Sectional, thus qualifying them for the State Meet. Both boys ran an excellent race, with Storm finishing 34th and Purvis 59th against com- petition from all over the State. Kent and Geno were also voted as the most valuable runners by vir- ture of their consistent one-two finishes. Our 1970 Cross Country Squad was an exceptional group of boys, char- actersized by hard work, pride and desire. This can be credited in no small measure to Coach Gary Co- ates, who was certainly a great source of help and inspiration to the boys. The school should be justifia- bly proud of its cross country squad. The many moods of the starting line. A TEAM. LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach Steve Mat- thews, K. Lourdeau, C. Swanson, J. Nelson, G. Varsity Basketball 1970-71 The 1970-71 Tigers epitomized the characteristics of unity and deter- mination. Paced by three returning regulars, Don Lind, Tadd Sutton, and Tony Romagnoli, the Bengals posted a respectable 17—10 log over the season. Opening with the Tiger Tourney in November, Coach Holler's forces swept through their first two games, but were stopped for the third year in a row by Peoria Ber- gan, this time in double overtime. The Tigers then turned to face State-rated LaSalle-Peru and Men- dota on successive Fridays. They lost both of these Conference games, but won on the following Saturdays. Then they defeated Hall, to post a 5—3 record going into the Rockford Classic. In the Classic, the cagers defeated Winnebago and advanced to meet Woodstock-Marion, who had upset No. 1 seeded Rockford Auburn. The Tigers were behind until late in the fourth quarter, when Dan De- Bord's three-point play put the scrappy Tigers ahead to stay.(Con- tinued on Page 62) 61 Ooh, let me touch! This victory enabled the Tigers to meet Zion-Benton for the right to advance to the championship game. The Bengals were ahead by ten points late in the fourth quarter, but All-Stater Burt Fredrickson swished a thirteen-foot jump shot with five seconds left to enable the Zee-Bees to defeat Princeton. In the Consola- tion game, Elite-8-bound Rockford Boylan defeated the Tigers by three points in double overtime. During January and February the Tigers of PHS lost to Ottawa Mar- quette, who featured All-American Bob Guyette, and lost to Elite-8- bound Kewanee, thus posting a 9— 4 record over the route. The victo- ries included wins over perennially tough teams like Dixon, Rochelle, and Sterling. This brought the team to the most important part of the season—the Regional Tournament. The third- seeded Tigers demolished District winner Tonica. Then the over- keyed Tigers ended their season on a very sour note, falling to LaSalle- Peru. In assessing the season, the Tigers have every right to feel proud of their record against some very tough competition. They brought honor to themselves, their coach, and their school. Wrestling 1970-71 Led by Coach Fred Johnson—in his second season as mat mentor—and aided by the new assistant coach, Lee Wahlgren, the PHS Grapplers recorded one of their most success- ful seasons, with a dual meet record of 9—7. The wrestlers started off with four consecutive victories, in- cluding a shut-out over Galva, 48— 0. After losing to a very tough Ro- chelle squad, the grapplers con- tinued their winning ways as they beat Peoria Manual and Mendota. They then lost to LaSalle; but, un- daunted, they came back and squeaked past Geneseo, 20—19. The Kewanee Holiday tournament was another story, however. The inspired wrestlers from Princeton completely dominated the tourney, outdistancing second-place Ke- wanee 50 points. All twelve of our boys reached the finals, and seven of these won their respective divi- sions. At our own Invitational in January, our grapplers wrestled very well but placed fourth of eight teams. After this, the competition proved to be generally more dif- ficult, as the Tigers faced the tough Conference teams. The Tigers lost their next five dual meets in a row, despite some very fine individual performances. The Tigers were determined to come back, though, and won their last three duals over Streator, Canton, and Kewanee. As a team, the Tigers finished sev- enth at the tough NCIC Meet; but four boys, Paxton, Martin, Lenihan, and Ouellette, placed an excellent third in their weight classes. The District Meet was next, for which Coach Johnson and the grap- plers had been aiming all season. The Tigers turned in their best per- formance of the season, as they won the District Meet, outdistancing ten other teams. It was the first District Championship for the wrestling squad in the history of PHS. Pax- ton, Lenihan, Martin, Bell, and King were all finalists, thus earning the right to advance to the Sectional Meet. Unfortunately, none of the boys advanced beyond Sectional competition to the State Meet. Princeton High School should be understandably proud of its wres- tling squad and the efforts put fortf by the coaches and all the boys whc were out for this sport. 64 FIRST ROW: J. Track 1971 In an area more laden with track tal- ent than in recent years, the Prince- ton cinder squad was still able to make a representative showing of it- self. Although not winning every big meet, the team showed they could compete against much larger schools. They consistently got points with Kent Purvis in the 880 and mile. His best time in the mile was 4:25.0. And Geno Storm set a new school record in the two-mile run in 9:26.4. Also these two young men ran legs in the various relay teams. There is much talent coming up with the likes of two freshmen receiving Varsity letters, Tom Torchia and John Highfield. Paul Skiem, a sophomore, broke the Frosh-Soph high-hurdle mark and tied the low- hurdle time. Proven standout Bob Halberg, who qualified for the State Track Meet in the two-mile, returns next year, along with Tim Scott. These people are the base of a strong Princeton track team in 1972. K. Marsh, Adviser Mr. Beltramini STUDENT COUNCIL '71 Change has been a key word for Student Coun- cil, which has resulted in a year of change for Princeton High School. It began when the dress code was reduced to a minimum of requirements. We initiated another first by sending delegates to several Board of Education Meetings. Small study and discussion rooms were established. Our Con- stitution was rewritten and modernized. As a service to the community, we canvassed Princeton to raise money for a Family Center, and we sponsored a March on Hunger. I hope future Student Councils of PHS will re- member that change is good, but only when made in a positive direction. I would like to thank Mr. 86 Swan and Mr. Beltramini for their guidance. —Kathy Marsh Teacher for a Day FIRST ROW: K. Yamada, J. Martin, B. Phil- lips, C. King, N. Bader, M. Isaacson, G. They have been full years, very happy years. They were great! All through our lives we will remem- ber our days here at PHS. We are a class—each of us part of the whole. Yet we are individuals. . We will make our own decisions and go our separate ways. The years we have spent here will help us to make our decisions wisely. The faculty and the class advisers have played a large role in our lives. All of us are grateful to them for their help. I would also like to thank my fel- low Class of 1971 Officers, the Senior Class Advisory Board, and all classmates for their coopera- tion and assistance. Onward and upward we will go, with our heads in the air, dreaming of the I impossible; and with our feet on the ground, making the impossi- ble happen. « Good luck to all. —John Westrum Dennis Ray Aim Denise Ann Bechdolt Bruce Ray Becker Joanne Kay Belkholm Angela Bohnsack Scott Gene Bolbock David Lee Botsko Dennis Gregory Bouxsein Peter Charles Bouxsei Kimball Davis Bergin Pamela Sue Boesch Seniors Seniors Debra Kay Dean Susan Elizabeth Dean William Gregory Dean Daniel Richard DeBord Thomas John DeBord Gregory Lee DeBord Janet Ann DeRose Susan Kay Dickinson Barbara Lee Douglas James Victor Drog Susan Irene Fredrickson James Andrew Eble, Jr. Carol Jean Duffield Brenda Kay Eaton 971 Mary Lynne Espel Myrna Kay Fischer Jeanine Elizabeth Erickson Alan Lee Erickson Suzanna Ernat Michael Ray Edwards Sheila Kay Gibson Seniors John Grundman Linda Jo Heaton Sharon Diane Hassler Lucinda Leanne Hassler Elizabeth Ann Hess Jane Elizabeth Hensel 971 Richard Allen Hoge Diana Jane Horan James William Horan Daniel Bruce Hubbard Charles Milbie Hukill Seniors Wayne William Ihrig Mary Lea Isaacson William Howard Johnson Pamela Susan Johnson Judith Ann Joiner Suzan Caryl Johnson Marsha Dale Kerr Gene Williams Kimberley Cherry Jo King William Walter King Louis Joseph Lourdeau Norman Edward Lucas Vickie Lynn McCauley Jennifer Ann McConnell Debra Kay McMahon Seniors Michael Viron Mcllvain Kathy Ann Marsh u v Janet Pauline Martin Bonnie Lou Maxson Jennifer Lou May Thomas Andrew Nelson Dawn Carol Nickel Sharon Joanne Norlin Harold Ernest Parr Joyce Lenore Petersen William Michael Phelan Deborah Jean Pieper Steven Clark Olin Anthony Michael Pazos Rita Marlene Olson Seniors Richard Dale Schafer Roberta Lee Scardon Seniors Mary Kathryn Schutt Diane Kay Schaill Susan Marie Simon Brian Coll Phillips Dana Gay Russell Carol Teresita Sims Carl Crane Schafer Vicki Lynn Scherer Todd N. At this time, the 1971 TIGER staff would like to dedicate this book to the person who made it possible, Mr. Kenny. His devotion and efficiency has guided many staffs.
