Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1969 volume:

1 Time it was, And what a time it was. It was .. . A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be . .. I have a photograph. Preserve your memories; They’re all that’s left you. Faculty and Staff Editor N. Peach. SECOND ROW: Business The year of 1969 was a year of changes. Leadership of the country passed on to Richard Nixon; tremendous efforts by the Apollo Space Programs greatly advanced that field of science; the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Vietnam became more complicated and confused. The TIGER 1969 is a presentation of the people who were deeply touched by and keenly aware of this constantly changing world. In appreciation, the entire yearbook staff would like to acknowledge the following people: Ameri- can Yearbook Company representative, Mr. Gardner, for his assistance; photographer Mr. Hamm; and especially faculty adviser Mr. Kenny for his great help after school in the production of this book. The purpose of a yearbook is to capture the many emotions of the year. As you look through these pages, see yourself reflected in the joys, the sorrows, the victories, the defeats, the order, the chaos of 1969. - Sarah Nelson. Pal Quillin Co-editors Manager G. Gregory Watts Johnson resided with two families in West Germany during the summer of 1968. Greg learned some German, and the customs of the people. Most importantly, he found a true appreciation of the bounti- ful life that Americans lead, and of the incomparable security of freedom that we enjoy. The innumerable experiences Greg encountered in his three months shall be remembered for a lifetime. 22 A.F.S. 1969 The ignorance and prejudice which dominate the thinking of many people today concerning foreigners have been conquered in our community. We were the fortunate hosts of a personable, gentle, and attractive young lady from Brazil—Heliana Costa. We students at PHS learned how small the world can be—and how to judge a person from his character, not race, color, religion, or creed. Lana learned to disregard many ignorant atti- tudes toward Americans. She also had the enviable opportunity to meet and associate with many foreign- ers, and learn of the importance of people. Neither the students at PHS nor Lana can forget the many joys and tears we shared together as we continue on in our many separate ways. 23 ■Campuses Still Troubled ■a’ itwsjfiA'MMXv'mv « m ffgSf EVERybody s as yot'ivq as Anybody ejylr T jfc aryl the, ACTIVITIES After studies, after work: Play. Student Council This year saw many changes in the functions and presentations of the Student Council. With school expansion and homeroom reorganization, it was decided to have Homecoming floats con- structed by various organizations instead of strictly by homerooms. Homecoming coronation festivities, the parade, and the elegantly decorated dance on Saturday night were all highlighted by the Tigers’ unquestioned victory over the Rochelle Hubs. A clothing drive in January resulted in the col- lection of several large bags of clothing for the needy. A number of conventions were attended by various members of the Student Council: Gales- burg in October, Quincy in November, Chicago in April, and an exchange with Quincy in April. The dress code was revised, and it provided for the Student Council to enforce and make judgment decisions. It is our hope that the dress code’s elasticity will aid in maintaining good student- faculty relationship. Student Council Week in May allowed the students a break in the end-of- the-year routine, and a chance to dress differently. Our weekly radio show kept the community in contact with events and personalities at P.H.S. I hope the officers for next year, Dan Quillin and Charlie Yelm, will fill in the many gaps we omitted, and improve on the projects we have delved into. It has truly been a fruitful year, and I appreciate the consistent help received from many Student Council members. —Patrick Quillin Student Council President 31 A Club FIRST ROW (SEATED): H. Monier. The formal initiation took place on March 14, with fifteen seniors and nine juniors received into membership. During the year, the National Honor Society sponsored “Teacher for a Day.” They also planned and executed the induction of new mem- bers; and at a tea immediately following the induction ceremony, they were hosts to new mem- bers. Pinafore” welcome the diversion offered by the appearance on board of Little Buttercup, a buxom and cheery woman who sells ribbons and sweet- meats. Even the ill-tempered tar Dick Deadeye smiles an evil welcome. And now the foremast hand, a bold and handsome sailor, confesses to his companions that he is most distracted by his hopeless love for a lady of high degree, to wit, the captain’s daughter, Josephine. Meanwhile worthy Captain Corcoran is having his troubles with his beloved daughter; for she declares she will not listen to the wooing of the elderly Sir Joseph—a pompous man who, though he has never been to sea, holds the high office of Admiral. She confesses tearfully that her heart is already given alas, to one of low degree. Soon Sir Joseph himself comes to visit the good ship “Pinafore”; and while the Captain is enter- taining his guest, the foremast hand, Ralph Rack- straw, declares his love to Josephine, who agrees to elope with him that night. But, alas, the Captain discovers the plot and has young Ralph arrested. Just in time, however. Buttercup—who dearly loves the Captain steps forward and announces that through a strange coincidence Ralph’s noble birthright has been given to the low-born Captain. Thus their positions on the ship must forthwith be reversed. This naturally alters every circumstance; Sir Joseph cannot wed the daughter of a foremast hand; Ralph is now in a position to claim the lovely Josephine; and little Buttercup is no longer beneath the consideration of the former Captain the now handsome sailor Corcoran. “H.M.S. The Tigers opened at the Oak Park Relays, commanding a first out of the ten schools that participated. Next came the Normal Relays, where Princeton made an- other outstanding performance, clinching a first out of twenty-one participating schools. The Tigers look still another big first of the nineteen schools in the Davenport Relays. At Davenport we placed first in the shot, long jump, pole vault, discus, and mile medley, and making a good all-around showing besides these firsts. The Bureau County Track Meet also pro- vided an opportunity for our lithe athletes to perform. At the Clinton Gateway Classic, Miller, Howard, Herzel, and Swan tallied up five records, and the team reaped another first, out of twenty-three schools. The thinclads came home to score another first at the Princeton Invitational, with six schools participating. Princeton then went to the very tough Rock Island District, where the Tigers placed a strong fourth out of forty-four schools. They traveled on to the State Meet, where Swan chalked up a first in the mile, and also set a new PHS record for that event. Bob Miller clinched a fifth in the long jump and an eighth in thc.880. 63 Bob Miller—Holder of Four PHS Track and Swan crosses the finish line with another first. Field Records At State, Princeton tied for twelfth place, in competition with schools from throughout the state. At the NCIC Meet, both the Fresh-Soph and the Varsity tallied thirds, with a combined total of seven firsts and two fourths. Five new records were set. Miller's 49.8 in the 440 and Herzel's vault of 13, 3 1 2 were also new school records. Sandwiched in among all the big meets were the duals and triangulars. The Varsity won all five of its duals, while the Fresh-Soph won three of their five duals. The myriad records set during the season truly re- flected the overall excellence and capacity for all-out effort of the 1968 track teams. Golf—1968 Guided by first-year Golf Coach John Smith, Princeton’s young and inexperienced golf squad compiled a record of four wins, eight losses, and one tie. It was a team with a future, though, as only one person out of the first string was lost through graduation. In fact, the entire nineteen- irfen squad contained only three 1968 seniors. Top shooter for the Tigers was Larry Dyer, with an average of 43.2 strokes per game. Round- ing out the top five are Bob Blakely, 43.7; Craig HofTman, 44.1; and Tony Kensinger and Terry Kasbeer, each with a 44.3 average. Three of the top five were expected to return to the 69 team— all except Blakely, who graduated, and Hoffman, who moved from Princeton. The Junior-Varsity produced a six won, four lost record, and showed a promising array of tal- ent. Cross Country—1968 The 1968 cross country team, coached by Gary Coates, proved to be successful in several re- spects. The Varsity placed third of fourteen participating schools in the Geneseo Invitational, placed first of seven schools in the Kewanee In- vitational, and then clinched seventh of twenty- four competing schools in the District Meet. In addition to their performances in the big meets, the Varsity tallied six wins and seven losses in their dual and triangular meets. Pacing the team was Princeton’s long-distance sensation, Tom Swan, as he racked up seventeen first-place finishes during the season. Sophomore Geno Storm placed second behind Swan nine times, providing the squad with a consistently strong one-two punch. The Fresh-Soph posted a record of six wins against seven losses, highlighted by a third place finish in the tough 12-team field of the NCIC. Freshman Bob Halberg proved to be the out- standing Fresh-Soph runner by coasting in ahead of the pack four times for number one honors. 66 From this congestion one will emerge victorious. 67 Varsity Football—1969 FULLBACKS. Tigers march to victory. Howard clears path for Morris. The Varsity gridders of Coach Rod Butler further enhanced their reputation this year as a team with the desire to win. Diligent work and a marked team spirit enabled the Tigers to over- come the loss of twenty-two lettermen, and pro- duce a 5—3—1 record against tough competition. Chillicothe gave the Tigers quite a scare in the season opener but finally succumbed, 7—6. A big factor in this game, and practically all others for the matter, was Junior fullback James Howard, who rushed for 148 yards. After successive victories over Kewanee and Hall, Princeton traveled to Rock Falls, where the Tigers tasted defeat for the first time, 20—16. In completing nine of ten passes for 112 yards, reserve quarterback Dave Arch ignited a rally that just fell short. Disappointment haunted the following week's game in a 20—19 loss to Mendota. The twin setbacks did not dampen spirit in preparation for Homecoming, though. Coach Butler’s determined squad of athletes highlighted the week’s activities with a 28—7 trouncing of Rochelle. The Tigers ended Conference play against the rugged Geneseo Maple Leafs. In- spired by the dream of stopping this perennial powerhouse, the Tigers battled the Leafs to a 7 7 tie, clinching third place in the NCIC. With- out the services of James Howard and Dan Quil- lin, Princeton fell to Morris 7—0, but closed their season by whitewashing Morrison 20 0. For his leadership and all-around excellence on the playing field. Quarterback Terry Kasbeer was voted Most Valuable Player by his team- mates. Determination and hustle were the outstanding features of this year’s squad which scored 160 total points to their opponents’ 49. and produced a 5—0 mark in conference play, although their bid for a perfect season record was foiled by a loss to Morris. Rushing was their strong point, as an excellent line opened the holes for hard-running backs Tadd Sutton (1017 yards rushing for the year) and Barry Paxton (819 yards). Larson’s awesomeness, the aggressiveness of forwards Terry Kasbeer and Jim Howard, the smooth, steady play of Jay Monier, and Rick Allen’s out- standing shooting were com- bined to produce one of the area’s top teams. The talents of sixth man, Greg “Casey” Stangel, must not be overlooked either; for with this six-feet, two-inch jumping-jack, Mr. Holler was always assured of a capable re- placement. The Tigers opened season play by placing second to Peoria Ber- gan in their own Princeton Tour- ney. After losing to Benton in the first round, the Tigers went on to defeat Freeport, Homewood- Flossmoor, and finally Decatur, 66—49, to cop the consolation championship. Floller’s cagers continued their winning ways, beating ten of their next twelve opponents, thus setting the stage for a dramatic showdown against Ottawa in the final game of the regular season. A Princeton victory would have meant a share of the conference crown, but the Pirates proved too much, forcing the Tigers to settle for third place in the NCIC with an 8—3 record. Closing the season as hosts of the Regional Tournament, Princeton coasted to a first-round victory, and triumphed in the second round over tough LaSalle-Peru; but their bid for a sectional berth was thwarted by an inspired Mendota team. Nevertheless, the Tigers had produced a record they could certainly be proud of, winning nineteen games while losing only eight. As far as statistics are concerned, Larson’s 490 total points (avg. 18 per game) was not only high for Princeton but also tops in the county. Couple with this the fact that he pulled down almost twice as many rebounds as anyone else on the team, and consider the huge effect he had on defense, and it will come as no surprise that big Rick was voted the Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Jay Monier had the hottest hand at the free throw line, hitting 121 shots out of 167 attempts for a .725 percentage. Terry Kasbeer was the leader in that unglamorous but very im- portant category—assists. The strength of the Princeton first five is illus- trated by the fact that all received All-Conference recognition. Larson and Allen were selected as first-team members. Monier rated Special Men- tion, and Kasbeer and Howard were given Honor- able Mention status. In addition, Larson and Monier were voted Honorable Mention All-State. 79 Large proves he s unstoppable underneath Rudolf Nureyev, you've met your match Freddie has the range It looks like another Tiger bucket Turn, twist, and shoot Dyer cans another one. Our tough competitors forced us to rely on individual victories rather than team wins. Our most prolific Varsity winners turned out to be Larry Espel at 120, Tim Palumbo at 127, Gary Anderson at 133, Bud Kittler at 180, and Richard Swanson at heavyweight. Larry Espel posted a 14—12 record, including a second at the District and a very respectable fourth at the Conference, where competition is extreme- ly tough. Tim Palumbo, also one of our top grapplers, notched out an 8 13—1 record. Tim also pulled through the season with a third in both the Tiger Tourney and the District. In addition, he had one of the fastest pins when he wrapped up one of his opponents with a 54- second pin. Gary Anderson at 133 pounds rivaled the other top wrestlers in our Conference with his 13—6 record. Gary proved to be a mobile powerhouse at the Tiger Tourney and at the Dis- trict, racking up a second in both tournaments. Bud Kittler, who is coming back next year, will supply the fans an exciting season of more wins. He had a combination of 16 wins and 10 losses, including fourth in Conference, second in District, and third in Sectional. Bud was the only one to place in rugged Sectional competition. Rich Swanson, our heavyweight, was also a jun- ior. Coach Towns believes Rich will be one of our top wrestlers in 1969-70 because of this year's impressive record of 11 10—1. Other Varsity wrestlers include Chuck Reigle at 145, Tony Kensinger at 154, and John Clausen at 165. The Varsity team win-loss record was 3—13. The Fresh-Soph had a 4—4 record. 82 VARSITY WRESTLERS. Track Once again PHS came up with a successful track squad, including two of the area's most out- standing athletes—junior weightman Jim Howard and senior long distance runner Tom Swan. The skill of Coaches Carl Cherrie, Gary Coates, and Rod Butler were expressed in the impressive per- formances of their respective proteges. The cindermen not only won the majority of their dual and triangular meets but also made excellent showings in various relays and invitationals. Individual achievements were almost staggering as the Tigers felled records right and left. The mile medley team of Mike Hodge, Steve Eckhoff, Steve Douglas, and Tom Swan established a meet record of 3:44.7 at the Joe Cogdal Relays; and then the very next week at the Davenport Relays, with Dave Arch, Paul White, Eckhoff, and Swan running this time, still another record in this event of 3:37.4 was set. Also during the season the 440-yard relay contingent of Randy Morris, Eckhoff, Douglas, and Hodge sprinted to a new school record of 46.3. At the Princeton Invita- Lucas, J. Frymire. S. Wathcn. B. Jim Howard’s heroics can only be described as superb. Not only did he hurl the discus a record- breaking 161’ 11” but also tied his brother Tim’s shot put mark of 56’ 1 1 4 . By placing second at the shot at the Rock Island District, he and Swan were privileged to represent Princeton at the State Track Meet. And of course there’s Tom Swan. His track laurels throughout four years of high school competition could easily fill a whole page. Besides his other well known achievements, he set a new school mark this year with a 9:28.3 time in the two-mile run. At the Frosh-Soph level, the Kittens were not silent, as their records show: 120-yard high hurdles Dan DeBord and Greg Dalton, 16.9; 180-yard low hurdles DeBord 22.2; two-mile run—Geno Storm 10:30.6; mile relay—Dalton, DeBord, Bill Dean, and Steve Wathen, 3:44.7; Frosh two-mile run Bob Halberg 10:40.5. 84 A Study in Timing PHS sprinters grind out another first. 85 Congratulations are in order for Swan’s second place finish at State. Tony Kensinger was our top golfer with a 42.8 average, followed by Terry Kasbeer with 43.4 and Larry Dyer with 43.8. Glenn McKewen, John Groy, and Larry Kearns all had average scores of about 44. The Varsity also did well in the District, capturing a seventh place. The linksmen also captured a sixth in the Conference, among twelve participat- ing schools. The JV’s did an outstanding job, which is shown in their 10—1 — 1 record. The JV’s strung together eight wins before crossing paths with the rugged Dixon team. Storm. indicates member of National Athletic Scholarship Society (NASS). Dedication and desire were the outstanding features of PHS athletes and coaches this year. Rigorous practices, a year-round weight-lifting program, and the talents of a gifted athletic de- partment produced reputable squads at all levels of competition, but especially at three main sports—football, basketball, and track Varsity squads. The 1968-69 season saw what was probably the most successful sophomore football team in PHS history. The Varsity gridders also proved their capabilities with top-notch performances in almost every game. Tiger basketball once again reached lofty status with one of the strong- est teams in years. And, finally, the track squad overcame the loss of many key men to win a majority of their meets. More importantly, though, the people con- nected with Princeton athletics showed the kind of spirit and attitude that makes such a program worthwhile. 88 PEOPLE Someday the people, too, may be Deciphered, explained, and saved; permanently fixed, forever unchanging, in plastic. But for now they are still shifting. Each person is fresh unknown unique fascinating. And many hours are spent wondering who each one really is. Principal Mr. Roger N. Swan For the past four years, we have had many op- portunities to observe how very loyally Mr. Swan serves our high school. He has been an inspiration for us throughout our years here, and will con- tinue to be an inspiration in years to come. We, the Class of 1969, have grown to appreciate Mr. Swan and all he has done for our school. We wish him the very best of luck. Mr. Swan's professional studies include earning bachelor and master of science degrees at NIL). For three years he also attended summer institutes at the University of Wyoming. 92 Dean of Students Filling the position of Dean of Students is a hard job for any one person to fulfill, but Mr. Hugo A. Gartner has now completed a successful third year in this capacity. We wish to thank him for all the understanding he has shown us through our years here at PHS. Mr. Gartner’s professional studies include earning his bachelor and master of science degrees at SIU. He has completed additional hours of graduate study at ISU, NIU, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Colorado. Mr. Hugo A. Gartner Secretaries Among the most essential personnel of a high school are the secretaries. Without the three pleasant secretaries we have at PHS, our school would not run as efficiently as it does. Mrs. Shirley Magnuson has now served PHS faithfully for seven years. Associated with her for the past three years has been Mrs. Helen Benson. Also, this year a new secretary has been added, Mrs. Jan Snell, with whom many of us come in contact every day. As Seniors, we extend a sincere thank-you to these ladies for all the help they have given us. 93 LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Benson, Mrs. Snell, Mrs. Magnuson. MR JOHN BASSETTI. B.S. Illinois State U. The year 1968-69 was no exception; faculty members gave of their time both during and after school hours to make our year the suc- cess it was. We, the student body, are very grateful. There are forty-nine faculty members, and it would be really hard to single out any one person who has done an outstanding job for our school. The one person, though, who has been a valuable member of the faculty for the last forty years is Miss Donnabelle Fry. Miss Fry has taught Eng- lish in all of her forty years here at P.H.S. She was outstanding as director of vocal music until the fall of 1965. Her concerts were major musical events in Princeton. In all her years here. Miss Fry has been an inspiration for P.H.S. students. I he year was saddened by the passing away of Mrs. Hoebel. Although she was here at P.H.S. for only three short years, many of us were privileged to be in her classes, and we came to know her and respect her deeply. We are proud of our faculty. We wish them well in their continuing efforts to promote the growth and development of young people who attend Princeton High School. 94 MISS SHIRLEY DONNELLY. Board of Education LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Harold B. Steele. Mr. LetB Pitcher. Mr. James H. Lowry, Mr. Harold E. Council, Dr. Herbert Marsh. The five men who make up our Board of Educa- tion deserve much recognition for the time and effort they give voluntarily for the student’s bene- fit. All of these men are prominent members of our community, so they are known to most of us. Each one of these men is a college graduate. Each one is well qualified to fulfill the duties of his position. In the last few years, we, the Class of 1969, have been able to benefit from and become aware of the work these men do to provide our com- munity with an effective high school. So now we wish to express a sincere thank-you to them. 100 LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Edna Hamrick, Mrs. Vera Poison, Mrs. Christine Brutcher, Mrs. Hazel Bomlcny. Cooks A special thank-you is certainly due our cooks here at PHS. Although we don’t realize how much goes into preparing our meals every day. we do know that without our cooks our school wouldn't run as efficiently as it does. Indeed, these women deserve our thanks and appreciation. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Scott Orvis, Mr. Ray W. May, Mr. W. Wesley Houtz, Mr Ken Griffin, Mr. Marion Hunton. Custodians The five men who really work hard to keep our school running efficiently year-round are our PHS custodians. Since then, there has been an abundance of en- joyment and an immeasurable quantity of memories produced by that class in striving to realize their claim. The succeeding class officers have molded and shaped the class into what they felt the fulfillment of that claim should be. The class advisors and the faculty have guided the class and shown it, to the best of their abilities. what is right and what is wrong. And what of the students in the class? What can be said of them except that they are the class. As senior class president, 1 feel that 1 am re- ceiving much undeserved credit. At this time I would like to give my sincere thanks to those mentioned above, who truly do deserve that credit. That group of freshmen is now a group of seniors, the greatest class this school has ever seen. —Rich Warner Mrs. White Class Advisors Mr. Jim King Mr. Goble 120 1969 Catharine Lynn Adams Andrew John Anderson Bradley Don Anderson Linda Kay Anderson Carolyn Jean Anderson Marjorie Ann Bass Gary Lee Anderson Daniel Lee Beese Frank Michael Bettasso, Jr. Barbara Genette Blakely Barbara Denise Bohnsack Francis Remy Bouxsein II John Lawrence Brennan 121 Seniors Linda Kay Brown Richard Lee Brutcher Kathryn Joyce Burkey Dennis Earl Clausen John Francis Costerisan Peggy Jean Carlson Barbara Diane Carroll John Andrew Clausen Heliana Araujo Costa Jon Laurence Coulter Sharon Kay Cufle William Gerald Currie Howard Robert DcRose 122 1969 Cheryl Ann Dickinson Valerie Jean Dixon Judy Donovan Bruce Edward Duffield Stephen Ray Douglas Linda Kay Duffield Janet Kay Doyle Larry Dean Dyer 123 Seniors Robert Andrew Fornandcr Larry Dale Espel Debra Jayne Gibbs Richard Lee Henry Goodrum John Hilding Groy, Jr. Edward John Glassmeyer Gary Dennis Grady Alice Arlene Hahn Michael Edward Glassmeyer Donald Gene Gross Thomas Eugene Hall Randy Keith Hasslcr Ted IX Wayne Heaton 124 1969 George Wayne Hcnderliter Jeanette Sue Hornback Linda Ann Hubbard Dennis LaVcrne Johnson Sandra Kay Johnson JoAnn Huber Gregory Wayne Johnson Patricia Carol Joiner Richard Ingram Pamela Lynne Johnson Terry Gene Kasbecr Diane Marie Kearns Barbara Ann Kittlcr Thomas Eugene Kramer Richard Paul Larson Kristi Lynn Klett Deborah Ann Kuepker Barbara Jane Lewis Martha Ann Krajewski Tommy Wayne L nge Carol Ann Lind Richard Ellis Lind 1969 Susan Elaine Magnuson Diane Lynne Manning A Jane Ann Markman Kevin Lynn McLanc Melode Jill Morris Lynda Feme McCauley Sherry Lee Mecozzi Jelinda Frances Murphy Daniel Thomas McConnell Karen Lynn Mettcrnich David Andrew Neff Peggy Lea Neill Karen Rae Nelson 127 Seniors Sarah Rhodes Nelson Steven John Nelson Delytc Gaye Nickel Gail Douglas Ohlson Donald Adam Nosalik Jr. Ruth Marie Olander Vicki Ardith Nyman Sharon Mae Olson Charles Wayne Palmer Timothy John Palumbo Michael Dane Partin Ncla Jean Peach Nancy Hope Potter 128 1969 Phyllis Marie Prosiko John Patrick Quillin Charles Jon Reigle Julie Kay Ringenberg Philip Neal Ringenberg Susanne Clare Rennackcr hdmund Harold Robinson 129 Seniors Phyllis Ann Scot! As an athlete, a student, and a friend, many were the times that he was harassed for his physical size. But what he lacked on the external sur- face was more than compensated for by his prodigiously kind character. He was many things that we, his class- mates and friends, can be proud of. But that is in the past, and the past can- not be altered. As we continue in our many separate ways of the future, we shall retain the memory of a boy we can be honored to call “our classmate.” 133 134 100th Commencement The years held much opportunity, of which some took full advantage and others let pass. The years also held tremendous pain and precious few moments of joy, creating new and deep feelings. These were diffi- cult times in the world and in personal life: they were strange and confusing, touching each individual in such a unique way that he would never be free from the experience. And now, commencement has, at long last, come and gone. The last four years run into yesterday and then fade with incredible swiftness. These pages preserve only the memories of the great class—the Seniors of 1969. 135 ADAMS.
