Cooks And Custodians 16 We, theClassof 1952, sayfarewell to our high school days with the joy that is appropriate to the successful completion of an important part of our lives. But the joy we feel in accomplishment is tempered by the sadness of parting from the friendships we found in student life. We particular- ly regret that Mr. Shaffer was unable to be with us during our final year at P.H.S. To the classes of the future, we say, Good luck and success in everything you do. T [ A C H [ I f 0 I A D A 48 TEACHER - FOR - A - DAY is a program whichalways receives special recognition from the student body as well as the faculty. The program was started in the year 1947 and was such a success that it has been continued over the years. National Honor Society is the sponsor of this program, which is open to any senior student who wishes to participate. The students sign up for the classes they wish to teach, and the N.H.S. assigns them. When the day of the program arrives, the boys wear suits and the girls wear dresses and hats. This is an event which all seniors look forward to. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society at Princeton High School had two main projects during the year the Teacher-For- A-Day program in the fall, in which all the seniors were asked to participate; and the Meet Your High School Day in the spring (which was held after the initiation of new members) when al I the eighth grade students in the district were invited to come fora day of visiting the school. On February 27, an assembly was held to initiate nine new members—five percent of the junior class and an ad- ditional 10 per cent of the senior class. All during the year, small plans were carried out to make money to pay for the pins given to initiates, and the rest of the time was spent in helping teachers and in projects to serve the school. THESPIANS The National Thespian Society is an educational organization established for the advance- ment of dramatic arts in the secondary schools. There are two aims of the society: (1) to create a better standard of performance in all phases of dramatic arts, and (2) to create a more active interest in the dramatic arts in the high schools. The Princeton Thespian Troupe 1120 presented two one-act plays for their second year activities. They presented the play, Not Even a Mouse for aChristmas Assembly. Fora spring assembly, they presented the comedy, New School for Wives. The troupe added to its membership roster twelve new members. To become an active member of the Thespian society, each student must earn a total of ten points. There are thirty-five other students working for membership in the organization. 54 P. H. S. Radio Station WLPO in LaSalle asked the schools in our area to prepare and deliver a fifteen minute broadcast. Princeton was selected for a program every month. We adopted the tape-recording method as opposed to doing a live broadcast, for the sake of convenience. Wedecided to try an Open House formatfor the organization of our porgram. Bob Kemper acted as announcer and toured the school talking to peopleabout school programs andactivities. Mr. Kenny did a good job as faculty advisor, and Susan Scully handled the difficult job of script writing . The program served two purposes.... reporting our activities to others and providing experience and entertainment for the participants. 55 VARSITY CLUB BACK ROW: Dick Bergland, Larry Jones, Ronnie Ellberg, Jim Strand, Bill Rutherford, Dick Swan, Stanley Peterson, Grant Vickrey. Chorus The singing groups of P.H.S. make several public appearances of which we are very proud. The annual Christmas Concert is held the last day of school before the holiday vacation. Every spring the big chorus event occurs. The annual Spring Concert this year was based on the theme of Love's In Season. Many members took part in solos, sextettes, quartets and dances, as well as in full chorus numbers. This concert is lots of work but lots of fun too. The last Chorus performances each year are at Baccalaureate and Commencement. Sacred Music is sung for the former. The various chorus groups all get together for a brunch onone of the last days of school. It is at this time that new officers are elected and the sad duty of saying good-bye to the Seniors is accomplished. The Chorus had a wonderful time working together during the year. We hope everyone who listened enjoyed our work. springtime nnnu'uu MESSENGERS Lth'T TO RIGHT: Tad Ryan, Diann Klingenberg, Diane Fawcett, Bud Dyke, Joanne button, uianne rioya, caroiyn Huffaker, Margaret Larson, Janet Anderson, Dick Small, Susan Scully, NOT AVAILABLE FOR PICTURE: Marcine Wilkins, Barbara Naborowski. THE 1952 TIGER STAFF The Senior Class, the traditional publisher of Princeton High's yearbook presents to the school and the student body the 1952 annual with the desire to have faithfully recorded the reasures of the year's happenings. Much time, effort, expense, and fun have been invested in the production, with each of the staff contributing some talent to make the book truly representative. First and foremost, the staff wishes to thank Mr. Joseph L. Kenny, our faculty adviser, for his guidance, patience, indulgence, and his efforts to in- spire the staff to seek perfection in this annual. May the reminders recorded here be a constant source of enjoyment to you in recollecting the school year of 1951-1952. 61 £Haff —•••« vioiiiici y. i ir. i_ e Costa played two saxophones at one time, three clarinets at one time, and the alto horn and the trumpet at one time. Roy Breg, secretary of Allied Youth, gave a lecture at an assembly Friday, Nov. 2. He spoke on the alcoholic conditions in high schools. He said to put everything into school, keep going until you graduate, don’t quit. Also he brought out many points about high school students and alcohol. Alcohol is the most serious prob- lem we have to face and it is the cause of many broken homes. He is a graduate of Manchester College and the University of Illinois. He was a guard on the football team at Manchester. Before coming to Princeton in 1950, he was head football coach at Barrington, where he had three successful seasons. Since coming to Princeton, he has broken even in eighteen games over two seasons. During the summer, Mr. Fry also coaches baseball. Under him last year Princeton won six games. This was four more than Princeton had won in the four previous seasons put together. VARSITY FOOTBALL The Tigers opened their 1951 football season playing a very inexperienced Walnut team. Be- fore the game started, the team was read a letter from Mr. Shaffer. Inspired by this, the boys went into battle. The first touchdown was made by Ray Marmaro on an eleven yard off-tackle smash. Tad Ryan scored the second and last touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a five yard run a- round left end. Beaber and Seidel added the extra points. The fine defensive play of the defensive team he Id Walnut scoreless throughout the game. A week later Chil licothe came to Princeton and went down in defeat 24 to 0. On the second play of the game, Marmaro broke through right tackle and picked up some fine downfield blocking. The result was sixty-six yard touchdown run. A few plays later Ryanthrewa forty-one yard touchdown pass to Bi 11 D i I ler for touchdown number two. Just before the second half ended, Ryan went around left end five yards for Princeton's third touchdown. Midway in the third quarter Mel Hult plunged over from the one-yard line to climax the scoring. Princeton's defensive team again played a fine game and held the opponent scoreless. The following Friday Princeton played their firstout of town game, traveling to Rochelle . This was also Princeton's first conference game. On the first series of downsafter the kickoff, Rochelle got a fifteen-yard roughing the kicker penalty. Princeton went into their spread fromation. A pass from Diller to Marmaro was good for forty-one yards and a touchdown. Jack Scott's fine down- field block, which took out two men, was largely responsible. Diller kicked the extra point. Rochelle marched right back and with their passing attack working scored just before the quarter ended. In the second quarter Diller, with some fine protection from the Princeton line, threw a high lob pass which Ryan gathered in for a sixty- two yard play. In the third quarter more passing gave Roche I le their second touchdown. They con- verted their extra point, and that was the game. The final score was 14 to 13, Rochelle. 77 Princeton traveled the following week to Hall to play one of the finest teams in the area. We just couldn't seem get going. Hall sprung their all-state fullback loose time after time for long gains. Princeton used the spread most of the game. The final score was 27 to 0. Playing theirsecond conference game and their third out of town game in a row, Princeton didn't look too good against Rock Falls. Right after the game started, Hult broke through left tackle and went fifty-four yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter, Ryan scored on a one-yard plunge. After that it was all Rock Falls. The final score was 12 to 7, Princeton. One reason for the low score was that Beaber, Ryan, and Hult were all injured in the first half. None of them played in the second half at all. This was three fourths of Prince- ton's backfield. Tom Seidel Chuck Burton Bill Skold Hughie Morrison Larry Jones Dick Dant Ray Marmaro Ronnie Sergeant The next game for the Tigers was Homecoming against Geneseo. After a scoreless first quarter, Princeton bounced back to score twice in the second. Beaber surprised Geneseo and all the spectators as well when he broke through center on a quarterback sneak to go fifty-seven yards for a touchdown. The spread formation paid off again as Marmaro broke through center for an eighteen-yard run and the second score. Running out of the spread again, Diller started a run to his right. Seeing noopening, he hitDant along the sideline for a twenty-one yard pass play and touchdown. Diller added all three points after tourchdowns. The score was 21 to 13. Playing the league leaders, Mendota, the Tigers went down to their third defeat, 32 to 12. Princeton was held scoreless the first half while the Trojans were running up twenty points. In the third quarter, Dant scored on a one-yard sneak. Toward the end of the game, Marmaro scored on a one-yard plunge. Beaber suffered a slight concussion in the second quarter and was taken to the hospital. Grant Vickrey Max Thompson Jack Wiggim Ronnie Ellberg Fred Lewis John Gleason Playing their last game on Bryant Field, Princeton played its best game of the season. They held a good Dixon team scoreless while racking up 27 points. Princeton scored in every quarter. Marmaro opened the scoring with a twenty-four yard dash over left tackle. Dixon took the kickoff and drove down to the four yard line where the P'ton defense held. Marmaro again broke loose this time for an eighty-two yard touchdown run. It was called back to the forty, however, by a clipping penalty. Hult scoreda fewplays later ona one-yard smash over center. At the start of the third quarter, Beaber returned the kickoff to the thirty-two yard line. On the first play Ryan threw a pass to Diller, who had stayed out as a sleeper. The play covered sixty-eight yards for another T.D. Here Dixon again drove to the four, but were stopped. Late in the fourth quarter, Diller intercepted a pass and returned it twenty-eight yards for a T.D. Another clipping penalty called the play back. A few plays later, Ryan wont around left end for six yards and the final score. Beaber, Diller, and Ryan added the three extra points. 80 Princeton ended its 1951 football season at Kewanee. The Boilermakers were in complete command throughout the game. We finally pushed across a score in the last minutes of play; Beaber scored on a one-foot plunge. Hugh Morrison suffered a broken nose and didn't see much action. The Kewanee game marked the end of high school football for fourteen Seniors: Mel Hult, Tom Seidel, Bill Diller, Russ Beaber, Bill Skold, Tad Ryan, Hugh Morrison, Chuck Burton, Jack Scott, Ken Shenlund, Fred Lewis, Jim Strand, Jack Wiggim, and Larry Jones. FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL SQUAD As the record shows, the Frosh-Soph Team had quite a disastrous season. But they cer- tainly learned a lot. Under the very able coaching of Mr. Durham, they learned fun- damentals which next year Mr. Fry won't have time to teach on the varsity squad. Mr. Durham also taught them that they must give all they've got all the time a game is being played. With such game experience behind them, quite a few of this year's soph- omores will makegood material for Mr. Fry's varsity next year. It seems the boys played their best game against Hall, when they were defeated by only six points—and Hall scored them late in the game. Although the boys looked very ragged at times during the 1951 season, there were bright spots which give a hopeful outlook for next fall. We wish the 1952 Frosh-Soph Team the best of luck, and hope they can completely reverse the record given below. The Tiger basketball team of 1951-52 was one lacking in height and experience. Through- out most of the season there were two or three Sophomores in the starting lineup. One man Dick Swan reached 6'4 . From there on we barely reached six feet once or twice. There was, however, plenty of team work and good ball handling. Highlight of the season was the 66-64 win over Hall. Another exciting moment was occurred during the Rochelle game when Bill Rutherford dropped a running twelve-foot jump shot with less than five seconds to go. The overall record was six wins and nineteen losses. Bob Hudson Jim Becker MANAGERS Diller Rutherford After the season ended. Bill Diller was elected honorary cap- tain, although during the regular season the three seniors took .turns as captain. Bill Rutherford was a- warded the Powell Free throw Trophy. In csoring, Diller was first with 292 points in 24 games, fol- lowed by Seidel with 232 in 22 games, Rutherford with 163 in 23, Swan with 146 in 23, Peterson with 90 in 15, and John Gleason with 42 in 15. SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL The sophomore team was handicapped early in the season by the good fortune of several of its members. Dick Swan, Stan Peterson, and John Gleason were moved up to the Varsity squad early in theseason. The season's record totaled up to seven wins in nineteen starts, with total points for opponents at 803 and for the Princeton Sophomores 735. Although the record doesn't look very bright, it does not show that some of the losses were heartbreakers that occurred mostly during the last few minutes of play. Bob Gleason led in the percentage of free throws made, 58%, with Russ Bouxsein a close runner-up at a 57% figure. High scorer was Russ Bouxsein; runner-up was Fred Boher with 133.
