First Township High School in Illinois. In the spring of 1866 the people of Princeton township de'ter1nined to have a public Township High School. This was the result of a general desire for better educational facilities, and of a full and free discussion of the best methods to obtain them. Accordingly, the school trustees organ- ized the township into The High School District of Princeton, and at an election held on April 23, 1866, the present site was selected, and three directors were chosen to administer the affairs of the district. Plans for the building were adopted, and in June the contract was let, the building to cost about forty-five thousand dollars. To give unquestionable legal sanction to the rather unprecedented undertaking, as well as to organize the work more perfectly, a charter was drawn and introduced in the legislature in January, 18673 and was promptly passed, and approved by Governor Oglesby on February 5, 1867. The school was opened to pupils in September, 1867, with M r.. Henry L. Boltwood as principal and under his able management, aided by the hearty support of its patrons, achieved great success. Since then, under excellent faculties, the institution has increased its enrollment and greatly improved its courses of study until now, under the guidance of the present principal, Senator H. S. Magill, the Princeton Township High School has obtained an honored and renowned standing a- mong secondary schools of the state. Page Eighteen , , ,,,
