Good Citizenship Contest If 'ff-'M ,,x ,,f CLASS HI TORY FRESHMEN Four years ago on a glorious autumn morning- September 5, 1945, to be exact-we donned our shoes, put aside childish pleasures, and entered, for the first time, the halls of P.H.S. One hundred five strong, we were greeted by Mr. Dill and the faculty, which included a number of new teachers: Mis. Morrow, Mr. Walker, Mrs. Moore, Mr. Downey, Mr, Dyer, and Mrs. Gayer. With great foresight we began at once to look forward to our Junior Senior reception. Through the kindness of the Princeton Theatre Company we sponsored the picture Cornered and proudly entered the sum of 3585.63 to our credit on the office books. This year Ann Carpenter, John Parker, and Ruth Aders represented us on the Student Council. Many of our members began musical careers by joining the band. Soon came those rare days in June when we forgot our books and once more enjoyed the luxury of blue jeans anil long sessions at the Greeks. SO PHO MORES The good days ended all too soon and wearily we treked our way back to the big Uteepee of knowl- edge, but the glamcr of that first entrance had dis- appeared. We we1'e welcomed in a sterner manner and soon learned that sophomores are not to be pitied, only to be tolerated. Several new faces appeared among the faculty: Mr. Weist. Mr. Daubenspeck, and Mrs. Beulah Mason. Miss Kriege, who had so diligently initiated us into the mysteries of algebra, retired to follow the more peaceful occupation of farm life. Our Student Council members this year were Vaughn Young, Carole Shafer, Dick Slade, Don Rhodes, Jim McDonald, and Loleta Hatfield. Patty Bammer and Delores Board were chosen attendants to the football queen, Joan Lewis. Eleanor Baldwin became our first student librar- ian. As the new look came in, the school year ended, and the Mt. Carmel swimming pool became our favorite rendezvous. JUNIORS At long last we returned to school to find our- selves members of that enviable group known as upperclassmen and were accordingly assigned seats in the assembly. Accustomed to changes we were not surprised to find three new names on the faculty roster: Mr. Schneider, Miss Mason. and Mr. Vanes. Wisely our newly elected officers, Marjorie Wil- liams and John Brown presidents, and Ruth Aders and Jim McDonald vice-presidents, set to work at once to garner the necessarv funds for the big event of the year, our Junior-Senior reception. Proud possessors of an antiquated pop-corn machine, two metal buckets, and one dozen lard cans, we became venders of pop-corn, hot-dogs, and candy. To sup- plement the wealth thus accumulated we presented the play Junior Miss, directed by Mr. Fougnies. ,eg- '13 E! ABS! .USN HHH1 IRE S2!'lllcn5i1Hi ,Liu Not only did we establish a reputation for excellent acting, but also added a goodly sum to our treasury. Our attendants to the football queen, Delores Board, were Marilyn Horn and Patty Bammer. Came May and the long anticipated event-the reception-arrived. After hours of back-breaking labor, converting the gymnasium into a colorful Mexican patio, we slipped into new formals and collars and ties, and forgetting our weariness tripped the light fantastic to the melodious strains of Bill Shelton's orchestra. The gruelling finals left us with the joyous thought-Only one year more! SENIORS Only one year more! The echo brought forth mingled feelings-some glad, some sad. Our num- ber, now only ninety-three, was reduced when Howard Cansler and Harley Gatewood left to finish their education in Uncle Sam's school, the army. On September 227, we were saddened by the death of Joe Cockran, who had been unable to return for his senior year. Tragedy struck again on October 6, and took from the faculty Mr. Dragoo, bandmaster for almost twenty-one years. Four new teachers greeted us this year: Miss McCown, Mrs. Nettles, Mrs. Maxam, and Mr. Evans. Later Mr. Berger took over the duties of band director. Too, we missed Miss Dame, who retired in the spring to enjoy the serenity of her country home. Our new officers isome oldj, Ma1'jorie Williams and Dick Slade presidents and Rita Sheridan and Jim McDonald vice-presidents, began at once to plan for The Retrospect, which we had decided to dedicate to Mr. Dragoo. Ellen Ann Shanley was chosen football queen with Eleanor Baldwin and Betty Coleman as her senior attendants. John Parker received the Quarterback trophy for being the outstanding back and Louis Galambos the trophy for being the outstanding lineman on the 1948-49 football team. Under the direction of Mrs. Maxam we presented January Thaw , a Broadway hit which proved to be a P.H.S. hit also. Incid-ently the sum added to our treasury proclaimed it a huge financial success as we . As The Retrospect goes to press we look for- ward to: The Junior-Senior reception on May 20, in the gymnasium, which, according to Miss Saupert, will be simply decorated with a crepe paper streamer or two. Oh! Miss Saupert, you wouldn't, would you? The Baccalaureate services on May 29, when we shall assume for the first time the formal attire of the well-dressed graduate-caps and gowns. The next day, sad in heart but cheerful in soul, we trudged up the hill to begin our last year within the beloved walls of P.H.S. To guide us through our final year we chose Marjorie Williams, Dick Slade, Rita Sheridan, and Jim Mc- Donald as officers. Our first football victory, over Wasliiiigtoii, made us over-confident of our prowess and we lost our second game to the so-called under-dog Dugger. The 'tFig'l1ting Tigers , however, came back with a decisive victory over the Bedford Stonecutters. The first of a series of programs sponsored by the Tri Kappa sorority was greatly enjoyed. The Cole Marionette-s gave a very clever version of Ruskin's King of the Golden River. Another lyceum program on football reaped al- most immediate rewards, for Mr. Weist's warriers of the gridiron subdued the doughty Boonville Pioneers. Dick McGowan fractured two bones in his hand in the last encounterg and the Tigers, minus his help. lost to Bicknell. But why mourn '? The teachers attended the S.VV.I.T.A. and we had a much needed rest. The end of the month found the seniors closing a highly successful advertising Campaign for funds to help defray the expenses of The Retrospect . Thanks to the merchants who so generously con- tributed to our cause. The Syndicate won and chose Rita Sheridan as editor-in-chief. The losers, known as the Coalition , chose Don Maxam as as- sistant editor. i 1 T . i 1 I 1 5 NOVEMBER The football team closed a successful season with victories over Jeffersonville and Jasonville. They well deserved the banquet given them at the Ameri- can Legion Home. John Parker was presented a trophy for being the best back and Louis Galambos one for being the best lineman . The Junior Class Play, Home Sweet Homicide proved a great success, and we looked forward eagerly to seeing our own special talent on the stage once again. November 24, ushered in the basketball season and a loss to Oakland City, the first of many defeats for a team that was really better than the scores indicated. This month also saw the Tigers lose to Mt. Vernon. Thanksgiving vacation proved a pleasant inter- lude from study. DECEMBER Santa Claus came early to Princeton High School when the Consolidated Auto Company gave the school a new Ford to be used in the safety classes. Now it's really not safe on the streets anymore! Perhaps old Santa had something to do with our basketball victory over the Petersburg Indians. At least we had one scalp in our belt. The new shop club F.V.W.A. Ltranslated-Future Vocational VVo1'kers of America? enjoyed a banquet efficiently served by the members of Miss Hudson's Home Ec classes. Members of the physical training classes were given a new pastime when the armory pool was opened to them for one day each week. Bad luck again pursued the Tigers. Huntingburg thrashed them to the tune of 72-34. Undaunted the scrapping varsity attacked the Owensville Kickapoos and proudly boasted another victory. Christmas vacation came at lastatwo whole weeks- and we were able to follow the Tigers io Boonville and Jasper only to witness, gloomily, 'two more defeats. .I AN U A RY Vacation over, back to school we plodded to start cramming for the final exams. Still loyal everyone who could hitch a ride went to Terre Hauteg Wiley turned the trick again! Final exams followed, necessitating late hours and industrious study during the week-end. Another lyceum program-the Polomene Potters fascinated their audience with an interesting demon- stration of the fine art of making pottery. The Tigers journeyed to Reitz to return defeated, but not discouragedg for the next night they played an overtime game with Boonville to lose by one point in a heart-breaking Hnish. In quick succession came a loss to Memorial, a comforting Win from Sullivan, and another loss to Bicknell. FEBRUARY The month of famous people opened 'with another program, given by the versatile VVade Quartette. The losing jinx continued to follow the ill-fated Tigers, who lost their games with Ft. Branch, Tell City and Evansville Central. Members of the band journeyed to Evansville to attend the District Solo and Ensemble Contest. Our talented musicians returned with a fair share of first and second places. The following week they repeated their successes at the State Contest at Terre Haute. MARCH As the strong March winds began to blow, the F.H.A. girls busily planned their St. Patrick's Day dance. March 2-1, the lights in the gymnasium dimmed, the curtain parted, and a large audience settled back to enjoy January Thaw , cleverly produced by the Senior Players . The best play we've ever had was the universal comment. Who are we to deny it! As the month Went out like a lamb we enjoyed another number of the lyceum course, the Conserva- tory Players, who presented Oscar VVilde's hilarious comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest. APRIL Pleasant weather inspired house cleaning, and Joe Board helped to remove some of the debris CU. Volley-ball became the popular sport of the Noon League. . . is The band attended the District Band and Choir Contest at Washington, and again our musicians won many honors. Another lyceum program, The Mikado , de- lighted the student body and gave them a 'taste of light opera. There followed a week crowded with activities. The band gave an excellent program in the gymnasium as a prelude to a drive for funds. Jack Rominger was presented with the Arion Foun- dation Award for the outstanding band member for 19-18--19g and William Clark Caniif was given a scholarship in music by Evansville College. On Fri- day night the Student Council gave a school dance that was indeed unique. The girls took the boys and paid the bills. What a pleasant reversal of custom! April 11, we entertained the county seniors in the afternoon. Representatives from various colleges met with the different groups to advise them con- cerning their future careers. The athletically inclined tu1'ned their attention to track and baseball, the thinly clads were in evi- dence eveiywhere. The seniors worked desperately to finish The Retrospect script, and everyone looked forward to Easter vacation and a respite from our labors. MAY The last month arrived, but passed, not slowly as we had anticipated, but with alarming rapidity as we realized that our school days would soon be over. Then came the last important events: The Junior Prom fMiss Saupert, we'll never believe vou againllg the Senior Dinner, saddened by the thought that it was our last social eventg Baccalaureate, with its solemn momentsg and Commencement, so aptly named, for we left the joys and sorrows of high school to commence a new and more serious phase of life. Branch Boys' Band, the Francisco Band, the Patoka Band, the Lincoln High School Orchestra, and the Mt. Vernon High School Band. Having had a varied career, which included engagements with lyceum and chautauqua concerts, musical revues, circus bands, and city bands and orchestras, he was able to produce versatile musical organizations, of which the Princeton High School Band has been outstanding. The present organization of sixty members was developed by Mr. Dragoo from a small aggregation of eager young' musicians. During' the years of its existence, the Princeton High School Band has made an enviable record, having won many honors as both a marching and a playing band as well as awards in district and state solo and ensemble contests. Under the leadership of Mr. Kenneth Berger, new director, the Princeton High School Band will strive to maintain the high standard of excellence set by Mr. Dragoo.
