FOREWORD All the Presidential candidates once belonged to speech and debate organizations. As teen-agers, great athletes joined their school teams. In high school, mathematicians were sparked toward their future careers, and carpenters received their first training. Perhaps that officer of Masque and Gavel will become an actor. Perhaps Medical Arts will produce a Nobel Prize winner. Perhaps but we know that our clubs, sports, and activities today will lead us to our future careers as better, more responsible citizens. On the following pages, our future highways are mapped otit. The signs are clear and the roads well paved. It is up t... ut . nark our route and follow our TIGER PATHWAYS. 2 Table of Contents Introduction Activities Faculty Senior Class Sports Junior Class Organizations Sophomores Advertisements STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS President: Pat Farley 1st Vice-President: JoAnn Whittaker 2nd Vice-President: Leslie Hill Secretary-Treasurer: Sammy Shutt STUDENT A Cappella Choir: Polly Winfrey, Annual Staff: Becky Gooch and Ruth Linkenhoker, Art Club: Jerry Hickman, Princeton Band Booster: Trish Thompson, C.Y.C.: Polly Winfrey, F.B.L.A.: Audrey Jones, F.C.A.: Stephen Goad, F.H.A.: Claire Maratta, F.T.A.: Claire Maratta, Bible Club: David Bolton, Honor Society: David Bohn, Interact Club: Chuck Cunningham, Key Club: Joe Phlegar, Keyette Club: Martha Carter, French Club: Ruth Linkenhoker, Masque and Gavel: Pat Carrick, Medical Arts: Beth Winfrey, Pep Club: Dee Phlegar, Science Club: Reggie Evans, Spanish Club: Becky Raney, Tiger, Tribune: Beth Winfrey, G.A.A.: Drema Sigmon, T.A.C.: Phil Fry. 4 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS LEADERS President: Peggy Howerton Vice-President: Judy Scott Secretary: Anne Mckenzie Treasurer: Becky Weiss Girl Representative: Dee Phlegar Boy Representative Jerry Lucado JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: President: Sammy Shutt Vice-Presi- SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: President: Sharon Rowland, Vice- dent: Rod Crozier, Secretary: Katie Maratta, Treasurer: Anita President: Billy Flanigan, Secretary: Debbie Thompson, Treasurer: Susie Eppes, Representatives: Kaye Craft, Mike Tanner Carr, Representatives: Jenne Hoskins, Rick Damewood 5 HOMECOMING ’68 Homecoming is the traditional crossroads when alumni meet future graduates. This annual event promises a host of special events; a city-wide parade high-lighted by the “big game” and begun by the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. The crowning of Sharon Robinson by football captain Steve Goad marked the start of Homecoming ’68. The Coronation Ceremony took place in the school auditorium with the entire student body witnessing the much awaited event. Queen Sharon was attended by her Royal Court, Debbie Thompson, Lynn Hyatt, Judy Six and Maid of Honor Debbie Reece, and their escorts. Amid a standing ovation, Queen Sharon left the auditorium to prepare for the evening parade. Leslie Hill, Parade Marshall, led the gala parade down Mercer Street. Town officals and club officers rode in the 50 car parade, along with Queen Sharon and her Court. Each of the three classes at PHS entered floats in competition. The Junior Class Float, with the theme, “Ring Out Another Victory” was judged the best entry. Friday was a new day. After classes, a pep meeting was held to work up school spirit. The senior class won the cowbell contest. That night the Tigers encountered the Oak Hill Red Devils. During the halftime activities, Queen Sharon and her court were escorted onto the field and the Queen was presented red roses by George Keatley, Principal, and cheered by Prince- tonians. The Tigers were honorably defeated by a score of 14-12. After the game many students and their dates attended the Homecoming Dance. anotherTIGER pathway Valedictorian TOP TWENTY William Eskridge 98.07500 Bill plans to attend Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. He will major in po- litical science to fulfill a later capacity as a college professor. Salutatorian David Bohn 95.62162 David is contemplating a bas- ketball scholarship at West Point. His ambition is to be a chemical engineer.- Class Motto: Today is our Moment; Tomorrow our Hope Graduation Date: June 11, 1969 Class Flower: Red Rose Class Colors: Blue and White Class President: Peggy Howerton Class Sponsor: Miss Gail Rector Principal: Mr. George W. Keatley Dedicated to the Class of 1969 ‘ $ George W. Keatley, Principal A high school principal’s duties are numerous and various. Making announcements, establishing vari- ous aspects of school policy, super- vising teachers meetings and signing excuses make up only a small part of his job. Even though Mr. Keatley is usually busy, he always has a smile and a cheery word ready for everyone. His influence makes him a definite figure of our school’s personality. School Administrators James J. Martin, Assistant Principal An often ignored figure in a high school is the assistant principal. Though he is sometimes overlooked by the public, students realize that assistant principal Mr. Martin is a vital part of PHS. His efforts contribute to the efficiency of our school. Because of her untiring devotion and exuberant energy, the 1969 Senior Class dedicates their loyalty to Miss Gail Rec- tor, class sponsor. Due to her help and ideas the Senior Class was able to build it’s Homecoming float, a memory never to be forgotten by the Seniors. Miss Rector was always surrounded by her students who soon learned that she was not only a teacher - she was also a friend. And to the other Senior home- room teachers we say “Thanks”. Showing above average grades, an abundance of talent, poise, and grace, Carol Miller and Dee Phlegar were chosen along with Debbie Bailey, Kathy Huffman, and Polly Winfrey as runners-up. Held just weeks after the school tournament the Regional Pageant included girls from all over southern W. Va. Princeton High School was justly proud when Dee Phlegar and Debbie Bailey were selected to attend the State Pageant in Huntington. Shunned by the public, made notorious by the press, re- spected and admired by his followers, and showered with gratitude by the student body, he is the machine behind our football team. To the right is our team and their assistants, shown in glorification of the work they do for Princeton High. 1. “Et tu Brute?” 2. “Tigers on the warpath!” 3. “How about a snake dance?” 4. “Quick! The art of participating in football as a competitive sport is the art of defeating an opposing team. Somewhere in the realm of football rules, a statement is made which designates the team having the most points, as the winner. But there is a great difference between winning a game and defeating a team. A team which defeats the opposing team does not always achieve this by points alone. A team may beat the opposition morally, physically and emotionally, without scoring more points. Such was the case this year at Princeton High when, week after week, the Tigers belittled their opponents. We, the Sports Department of the Annual Staff, feel that in terms of defeating opposing teams the otherwise dismal 3-7 record can be reversed to a 7-3 worksheet, and the PHS football squad can be honored for meeting a competitive challenge successfully. P H S juniors find, however, that being upper-classmen is not all fun, for they struggle with chemistry, algebra-trig, and American history. Highlights of the junior year include choosing a new class ring and planning their first junior-senior prom. Their spirit has grown with winning the cowbell several times and placing first with their float in the Homecoming Parade. With all of these qualities the juniors will make top-rate seniors of 1970 as they continue along the Tiger Pathway. 69 Karen Akers Ruby Akers Charlene Anderson Donald Anderson Allen Archer Scotty Arnold Chris Auer Eva Ayers Cynthia Bailey Dale Bailey Frank Bailey Lane Bailey Maxine Bailey Randy Bailey Ritz Bailey Travis Bailey David Baker Skip Ball Vickie Basham Linda Bazzie Steve Beckett Sandra Belcher Warren Belcher Donna Bell Billie Bishop Patricia Blankenship Barbara Blevins Leroy Blevins Tom BonDurant Retta Bowden Sandra Bragg Kathy Breeden Grey Brewster Bonnie Bridges Pam Brock Debbie Broyles Yvonne Buchanan Debbie Burchette Paul Burton Steve Byrd Linda Caldwell Patricia Caldwell Tom Carr Micky Carroll Vincent Carter Jerry Chambers Vickie Christian Linda Childers Dennis Clark Sarnia Clark Terry Clark Linda Cocus Drcama Coleman Stephanie Coleman Robert Combs Darla Compton Lawrence Conner Connie Consolo Ann Constantino Louie Constantino Nick Constantino Danny Cooper Carmen Costello Judy Cottcll Ann Covey Kaye Craft Brenda Crotts Ernie Croy Rod Crozier Justina Cundiff Pam Davidson Eddie Davis Mary Davis Wetzel Davis Karen Donovan Amy Dunn Kathryn Dye Mclva Echols Jeff Eller Anita Eppes Due to the continous hard work of both students and teachers, the Junior float “Rang out a victory . Involving the students of Princeton High School in fighting cancer and spreading knowledge of this disease, TAC organizes assemblies and activities for the school. With the help of Mrs. Kauffelt, the sponsor of TAC, the members distribute helpful literature and collect money for the Cancer Fund. Last spring alone, they collected over $250. As this is the first organization of this kind in Mercer County, PHS’ Teens Against Cancer has led the way for similar clubs in other schools. Kessinger Mrs. J.F. Kessinger ODE TO A. J. In the room of 242 Sat Gooch and Rufus and Joe Swim too. Amidst them all was Mr. Sisk Saying Nothing but tsk, tsk, tsk. “We need an annual,” He frothed, “Or else we are surely lothed”. But Mr. Sisk, that cannot be? This year we have spring de-liv-er-y. I seem to recall when we were late once or twice. So let us not worry this may be the thrice!. Without Mr. Sisk, his laughter and wit We all would have de-cidely quit. To tame us he used a stapler gun, And from the scars on our faces he usually won. Of course, we’re kidding, he’d never do this; His aim is so bad he’d invariably miss. However, he helped us thru thick and thru thin. Through teachers and students and pages of sin. While Carl is waiting at the office door And Scotty’s busy on the floor, Gooch is calmly cutting her hair And Peter is stumbling up the stairs, Leslie and Dee are almost in tears Cause ’69 has been a great year. Hylah will type anything for you While Joe will chalk up another pool cue. Ronnie cheers us up with his numerous puns But Katie and Carper are Atilla The Huns. Ellen’s the one who misses the jokes And Jerry’s the one who goes for the cokes. That leaves Ruthie and Jessie, The old and the young. And so goes this ode With no one unsung. Bwana, Buddha, and Leader, too Are some of the names that we called you. To Mr. Sisk from the Annual Staff OUR DEDICATION 156
