✓ C A In a busy world filled with fear of nuclear war, com- munist invasion, and the space race, Princeton High School still has time for hap- piness. Here, in our own corner of the world, we know the value of a smile and want to show the world what 2 FOREWORD HAPPINESS IS a phrase with different meanings to different peo- ple. It can be defined only by each individual for happiness comes in many forms . . . in a job well done, in excelling in a class, or in athletic triumphs, or in a full and activt i life. At a time when we need to be reminded that our world is ever- changing and that we must have the maturity to face it without qualms and the flexibility to change with it; it is reassuring to know that happiness exists all around us and through us. It is a pleasure to compliment the annual staff on its choice of the 1965 theme “Happiness Is”. As sponsor of this book I feel that they have defined our school well and that they have given individual recognition in the appropriate places. May I submit to you that “Happiness is not often recognized or appreciated until it is lost. We the staff of your school yearbook sincerely feel that here on these pages we have captured a permanent bit of happiness for you to enjov in future years. Mrs. Dean L. It holds a high position in the world of today for it developes the world of tomorrow. The men and women who serve as teachers to the youth of the world perform their services often with little recognition or expression of appreciation. Increasing public interest in providing modern equip- ment, pleasant surroundings, adequate salaries will bring into and hold in the profession qualified young people. In appreciation of your high ideals, we the staff of the 65 TIGER, dedicate this book to the teaching pro- fession, especially that of PHS. We extend heai;tfelt thanks for the interest you have shown in students and the inspiration we have received. HAPPINESS IS HAPPINESS IS HAPPINESS IS learning under devoted, dedicated teachers. paying tribute to our teachers and expressing our gratitude for their efforts. dedicating oneself in unselfish service to building for eter- nity”. 'A Teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. ” (The Education of Henry Adams) FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America is an organization which seeks to train young people for professional and civic leadership by encouraging them to cultivate in themselves the qualities of personality and charac- ter which are the foundations of suc- cessful teaching. It is an organiza- tion which strives to create more and better teachers. Because this edition of the TIGER is dedicated to teaching we felt that our future teachers deserved a place of honor too. HARVEY, Ana't. Principal To the Class of 1965 Dear Seniors, With the closing of this school year, you have completed one of your early goals. It is my hope that this is only an intermediate step and that you now set your sights on higher and more advanced goals. There is so much before you; don't let the little and the petty restrict your horizons as you shoot for new heights. You have kept the T.II.S. traditions bright and shiny; you have added immeasurably to the history of the school by your many accomplishments. Princeton is justly proud of its senior class of 1965. It is the wish of your friends, the P.H.S. faculty, that the years will treat you kindly and that you might have God's blessings in the life before you. II Robert L. Right Mr. Howard Harvey Assistant Principal Mr. Howard Harvey is well equipped for his job as assistant principal. He is successful in coping with the experiences which confront an assistant principal. Every day he deals with student problems, super- vises school activities, and maintains strict discipline in a fitting blend of authority and understanding. Mrs. Riccardo Martin Guidance Counselor Senior Class Sponsor Recording statistics and scores, planning Career Day and College Day, writing recommendations and re cords--nothing in Mrs. Mar- tin's busy schedule takes precedence over guiding students. As a counselor and a friend, she gives services which we greatly appre- ciate. 12 MISS ELAINE KEATLEY TREASURER MISS VIRGINIA HATCHER LIBRARIAN I MRS. PEGGY WILSON SECRETARY MRS. GYPSY COLVETT SECRETARY We, like a nation, must be governed and counseled by wise and conscientious leaders. To our leaders, we look for essential guidance and advice. Our administration and faculty strive to enlighten our minds, create and mold our character, and instill in us a desire for additional learning. Unselfishly the PHS teaching staff sacrifices time and effort in planning of our classroom activities and they spend countless hours sponsoring our extracurricular organizations. As we pause to give well-deserved recognition, we extend sincere thanks to our leaders, our sponsors, our friends for their untiring devotion. HAPPINESS IS GRATITUDE FOR SUCH SERVICE. We quote the Seniors as they bestow this honor on Mr. Barger Lilly: He is always cheerful and can keep perfect order in his classes without undue stiffness and formality. — He is very much interested in every student and is never too busy to provide extra help for anyone. — He shows interest in all school activities and is always willing to do more than his part. — He makes his classes interesting and inspires us to learn. — He has influenced my thinking more than any other teacher. ”— He has a great attitude toward life and loves teaching. -- To me he gives the impression that his whole life is based on the students at PHS. — He always has a smile on his face and gives credit where it is due. -- He has trusted us; therefore we must honor him. — He has a unique style of teaching. — He is very efficient in all endeavors and strives to present a class that is interesting and profitable. — He is a fine all-around gentleman. (HAPPINESS IS GIVING CREDIT TO SUCH A DESERVING PERSON.) „ The happiest picture in our yearbook is that of Stanley Shultz, Custodian, as he accepts a token of apprecia- tion upon his retirement. Our cooks and custodians deserve much recognition for their service to the school. Through their generous effort, they have made our days at PHS more enjoyable. HAPPI- NESS IS brought to PHS by such industrious and happy people. The National Honor Society was organized in Princeton High School in the fall of 1930 with nine charter members. The sponsor was Miss Ruth Hughson for whom the chapter was named. Two inductions were held in succeeding years through the spring of 1956. Following the death of Miss Hughson in the summer of 1956, the Hughson Chap- ter became inactive. On April 7, 1965, the National Honor Society was reactivated in our school with the induction of 30 seniors into membership. The group is pictured below. The object of the Hughson Chapter of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Princeton High School. This new chapter will maintain the original name; The Ruth Hughson Chapter and its new sponsor will be Miss Ruth Wall. On May 19, 1965, other new members were inducted into this society. After the introduction by President Mack Cy- phers, members of the Society explained the four qualities upon which membership is based. Speeches on scholarship, service, character, and leadership were given respectively by Tom St. Clair, Pam Pennington, Edward Effron, and Francis Selig. Pledge to the new members was given by Cheryl Cuppett, secretary of the chapter. Sharon Lawrence explained the colors of the society and Vice-President Lowell Lewis described the emblem. The program also included a vocal duet, Follow the Gleam, by Francis Manning and Pam Pennington. The emblem of the National Honor Society is a keystone which holds the flaming torch of learning and at the base of which are the letters for the four cardinal principles of the society. The flower is the yellow rose and colors are blue and gold. Diana Arrington, a senior from Princeton, was sponsored by the Princeton Rotary Club to the two day event this year. ST A TE GO VERNMENT DA Y Barbara Lambert and Kenneth Ferris, juniors, were se- lected by the Social Studies teachers to represent Princeton High School in the annual Know Your State Government Day which was held in our capitol, March 1, 1965. This event provides an excellent opportunity for students to secure practical experience through actual observation of our governmental processes. These students were introduced to the Governor of West Virginia and toured our Capitol. STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY On May 5, 1965, Princeton High School students, elected by the student body, took over our city for the day. This is an an- nual event which serves the same function as State Government Day on the city level. They have formed hopes, goals, and dreams in us that will serve as guides to our future.
