XE Princeton High School Princeton, New Jersey X Q foreword Throughout the past tour years books have played a very im- portant part in our lives. Carrying twenty pounds ot school books home every night, copying word penalties from that formidable book, the dictionary, keeping a date book well filled-these are some ot the high school memories, both pleasant and otherwise, in which books have played an important role. As we recall some of the more enjoyable books with which we have become acquainted, we notice that many of the titles are true signposts to the several phases ot Princeton High School lite. Feeling that they quite accurately describe our administration, classes, and activities, we have applied appropriate titles to some ot the following pages. We of the yearbook staff hope that the 1954 PRINCE will always be among the most treasured books and that it will help to recall in years to come the most cherished memories oi Princeton High School. Attention Mr. William and Mr. Joseph principal, will hold office tudent The Student Council, which governs the extra curricular activities of Princeton High, completed a successful year under the direc- tion of President Ellery Calkin and Faculty Advisers Miss leanne Wright and Mr. Rich- ard Borger. Other officers included Barry Cramp, Vice-President, lean Smith, Corre- sponding Secretaryg Myrtle Snyder, Record- ing Secretary, Amelia Kettenburg, Treasurer. The Council, composed of representatives from every homeroom, major activity and class, met once a week during the activities period. The Council's Work was accom- plished through open discussion. Standing committees carried out the many suggestions brought up during Council ses- sions and became more important than ever. The Social Committee undertook the man- agement of Council-sponsored dances, such as The Get Acquainted Dance, The Bonus Dance, and The Cherry Tree Ball. The proceeds gained from The Cherry Tree Ball were donated to the Red Cross. Each year the Council sponsors several drives supervised by the Drives Committee. Assisted by the Publicity Committee, which oouncH through posters in the halls and homeroom competition publicized the drives, the Drives Committee successfully undertook the Thanksgiving Food, Christmas Stockings for Service Men and the March of Dimes drives. The Publicity Committee carried on a con- tinuous Clean-Up campaign, and with the aid of the House and Civics Committee, which works behind the scenes to keep the school neat and repaired, set a high prece- dent in school conditions. The Students Ex- change Committee worked continually to earn money for the Activities Fund. The Honor Study Hall Committee continued the fine work begun by other Councils in regu- lating honor study halls, Where students could study quietly on their honor under student proctors. Student Administration Day, always memorable, enjoyed another successful year under the Council's super- vision. For service to the school and for teaching the practical application of self-government, the Student Council of '53-'54 deserves the greatest credit. FIRST ROW: K. Boyd. P. Malcolm. M. Somerville. C. Captained by Tom Murray and Harry Burton, this year's squad rolled up a total of five victories as against three defeats. The Little Tigers were off to a slow start, losing to Leonardo, 24-13, and Peddie, 19-U. Bounding back from these two setbacks, the Blue and White ground out victories over Hamilton, 16-12, Trenton, 33-14, and Trenton Catholic, 18-6, to gain the mythical Mercer County Champion- ship. After losing to Somerville, 14-6, they closed the season in impressive style by de- feating Long Branch, 6-O, and the Hun School, 46-6. Princeton High amassed a total of 138 points to their opponents' 95, for a scoring aver- age of close to eighteen points a game. Spark- ing a powerful single-wing attack were backs Harry Burton, Pete lohnson, Bob Montgomery, and Al Terry. Spearheading a hard-charging, ZOO pound defensive line were Tom Murray, Stan Clark, Frank Kessler, and Reggie Carter. Other standouts were Donald Lovering, Frank Novatkowski, Dick Meyer, Art Mount, and Bob Taylor, Seniors, and Carl Brown, Bob Davison, Bucky O'Kane, Bill Bodefeld, and Dick Wood, luniors. Full credit should be given to the coach- ing staf'f which made possible this year's fine record. Head Coach loseph lingoli was ably assisted by Mr. Richard Wood, Mr. Gerald Groninger, and Mr. Tony Borzok. Promising material for next season should be coming from the lunior Varsity which went to an undefeated season under the coach- ing of Mr. Groninger. The boys had to adapt them- selves to the new man to man defense which replaced last year's zone and consequently got off to a slow start but rebounded to complete a fairly successful season. For what they lacked in height, the hoopsters made up in spirit as they won several close games. The tallest rnan on the squad was Al Terry at 6' l . The starting five for most of the season was Terry, Pete lohnson, Bill Rodefeld, Bob Mont- gomery, and Dick Vtfood. Terry played pivot and did or good job of getting the reboundsg lohnson sparked the team with his all-around playmaking and scoringg Montgomery proved a consistent scorer: while Wood and Rodefeld were a great help with their scoring and re- bounding. Returning from the 1952 squad were five lettermen: Bob Stewart, Keith Wallace, Calvin Buedemann, Beetle Bosley, and Tom Brown. The start- ing lineup had Stewart at first, Pete Iohnson at second, Bob Montgomery at short, and Bill Bodefeld at third. ln the outfield Wallace was in left, Harry Burton in center, with Bos- ley in right. Sharing the catching were Brown and Buedemann. Two juniors, Dave Maas and Bob Stadler, headed the pitching staff and were backed by Montgomery and Stewart. Also seeing considerable action were Fred Lavoie, Ken Hoagland, and Reg- gie Carter. As far as fielding went, this was one of the best teams in P.H.S. history. The pitch- ing was also good, but it was at the plate that the Little Tigers bogged down. Only three members of the squad closed the sea- son with a batting average of over 250. Getting good pitching and fielding the Blue and White won two of its first three games. However, hampered by weak hit- ting, the team could win only two of its remaining ten games. The season's four victories came at the hands of the l-lun School, 5-3, 10-6, Ewing, 3-lf and North Plain- field, 4-3. Under the direction of Miss Tunnell, and with the assistance of the Leader Corps which officiated at these games, the teams fought hard in order to gain the first place position. The team succeeding in doing this was awarded a small blue and white banner in assembly as a souvenir of its basketball ability. The basket- ball program was planned by Lois Cooper, the Manager. liookey Vigorously active from September through Thanksgiving, the hockey season included class tournaments, in which the Seniors were champions, and gym period play-offs, won by Lorelei Fugill's team. Girls playing in the Central Iersey Tournament were Ruth Ann Karch and iune Harris, on the first team: Ella Prockafellow and Marilyn Scasserra, the reserve teamp and Dianne Chase and Mary Homrighausen. Playing against Hamilton, Seniors were beaten 2-5, Iuniors won 10-U, Sophs won 7-2. Interest proved to be unusually great among the girls, but unfortunately they did not have much opportunity for instruction. The girls were divided into three groups accord- ing to their ability. The advanced players organized a tennis ladder in which they competed in single matches for the highest place. The season was a successful one and the girls had a wonderful time together on the courts. oithall As one of the favorite sports of the year, softball began early in the spring with many girls coming out to take a whack at the ball after school, as well as in gym class. The teams were coached and the games umpired by Miss Adelaide Tunnell, with the help of the Leader Corps. Tournaments were run in the gym classes and play-offs were held between the winners. After school, all-star Freshman, Sophomore, lunior, and Senior class teams were chosen to play each other and in games against other schools. Bowling, tumbling, ping pong and volleyball are several ot the main sports for girls which are held during the Winter months. Bowling, the most popular ot these sports, was held every day after school from Thanksgiving until the Christmas holidays at the town bowling alley. The girls were divided into three diiierent groupsfebeginners, intermediates and advanced. Teams were organized and entered into competition. High scores were posted each week in the gym. Tumbling was also fun. Under the direction ot Miss Tunnell, the girls met twice a week, Wednesday and Thursday, to try the latest stunts. They learned to do flips, headstands, dives and other tricks. Ping pong pro- vided the girls with an opportunity to demonstrate their individual skill in competitive games. They met tour times a week under the management ot Lois Gutbrodt. Teams were organized and volleyball tournaments were held in all gym classes to determine the girls' best volleyball team. The best players from each class were also chosen to play on their own class team in which they competed against one another. TOP LEFT: They await the ball eagerly. TOP RIGHT: Hurray!
