WVELCOMING HANDSHAKE is extended by CAPT Hollingsworth as CAPT O. C. Gregg Qleftj arrives aboard by plane in the Task Force to assume command. MARINE ORDERLIES serve the Skipper and the Exec with efficiency and courtesy character- istic of the service. THOUGH HE WAS the new Commanding Officer, Captain Gregg quickly proved that he too had the background experi-I ence for command of an Attack Carrier. In the photo on the right hand page, CAPT Gregg Qin foregroundj points out the salient features of the daily air plan to the Air Oflicer.

i1-1-.1- THE SHIP THE HELMSMAN TCCCIVCS h1S orders through the voice tube from the OOD on the outer bridge and steers the ship by remote electrical control :activating massive hydraulic rams attached to the rudder. Lea helmsman transmits speed orders to the engine room. HILE the strikes are in the air over Korea, the business of war continues to occupy the complete efforts of ship's company personnel back aboard the carrier. The minds and muscles of the ship and her men are controlled from the bridge. Here the command decisions are madeg here can be found the Commanding Oilicer, either on the open bridge supervising air operations and task force evolutions, or in the sea cabin transacting the interior affairs of the ship. On the bridge and in the pilot house are the Officers of the Deck, the Quartermasters, and the Boatswain's Mate. From here go the orders to the engine rooms and helmsman. Squawk boxes, radio circuits, and radars pour a continual stream of tactical and administrative information onto the bridge where it must be evaluated and acted upon. This is the nerve center of the ship ...,. MANEUVERING BOARD SOLUTIONS cal- culated by the JOOVV aid the Oflicer of the Deck in bringing the ship smartly into position when changing or regaining station. ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY for the ship's safety and its accomplishments rests always upon the shoulders of the Captain who seldom leaves his bridge while at sea.
