Steam and electricity are 'JL' the only sources of power aboard the aircraft carrier. Discount- ing the main turbines, then electricity becomes the most important source of energy. Think what would happen if the Sparkie weren't around: the ship cou1dn't turn, there would be no venti- lation or air-conditioningg no ice cream, no movies, no guns could shootg you be any cooked meat, the ship couldn't anchor or come to a dock, the lights would always be out, the ship wouldn't be habitable. s N. M The B Division is the largest 5 and one of the busiest aboard. Totaling 205 men, the division is divided into four different groups. First, the four f1re- rooms provide all the power for the move- ment and general operation of the ship. Second, the evaporators make the fresh water for the crew's use and the feed water for the ship's boilers. The evaps are comprised of two regular and one emergency units, all going continually. Third, the oil and water gang make tests such as alkalinity, hardness, and oxygen tests of the boiler feed water. informal atmosphere prevails between officers and men smoke watcher reports to the boiler rooms where combustion is regulated c, a ,g,p::Nj ,1, : WA X Wf,f?Z,,yW,k .,,,f,,,,,W ,Wvi 5? And last, to keep the boil- ers and the fireroom machinery ship-shape, the boiler repair gang toil endlessly. Hot stuff vapor at 180 degrees Farenheit, and untenable firerooms are the tools that these men use to keep the ship in operation. They supply the steam that turns the turbines that furnishes the speed required for the launching and landing of aircraft. H. A. Everett, G. D. Walkup, P. S. Fim- bres, L. F. Grimes, S. Allrini, K.
