Fire controlmen and Fire control technicians main- tain and operate the various radar and fire con- trol systems, located throughout the ship. This involves three different types of radars, live dis- tinct types of directors, and their associated com- puters. This equipment is used to direct the fire of the numerous 40 mm and 5 guns. To these men falls the responsibility of stand- ing ready, with never failing alertness to re- pulse enemy attacks. Below the third deck you find the other half of this split personality, the Gunners' mates of the division who maintain the ship's numerous magazines. To these men fall the never ending job of ' supplying the Air Group with a constant flow of bombs and ammunition. Coffin wfmsww, ..XXx ,, M , s es i Engineering is a loose term describ- ing generally an organization of six hundred men charged with the ma- chines, dials, wheels, pipes, valves, fires, steam, and shafts of the bowels of the ship. The four giant turbines with their eight boilers have driven the 3,000 men and 85 aircraft of the Princeton 196,000 miles in the two years since re- commissioning at a speed that often reached 31 knots. VVith boiler room temperatures sometimes reaching 120 degrees their job is not an easy one. Beside main propulsion these men will control the ship's damage in case of enemy attack or severe storms.
