Her favorite spots in the USA are the Skyline Drive in the Blue Ridge Parkway and New York City. She has also traveled extensively in Europe plus Africa, Turkey, and Iran. Her life in America is different from that in Germany. Here she watches more TV. Her favorite television shows include the Cosby Show, Kate and Allie, and Dallas. She enjoys going to the movies; her favorites are Casablanca and Back to the Future. Frau Stegmeyer explained that most American movies are translated into German but some have subtitles. Her other interests include going to the beach and meeting and talking with the people. She doesn ' t, however, like going shopping. Frau Stegmeyer finds Americans friendly and helpful and doesn ' t feel that there is much discrimination or prejudice against foreigners. However, sometimes she does find it hard to understand the slang. Princess Anne junior is privileged to have Frau Stegmeyer as our Deutsch Lehrerin . 107

Princess Anne Jr s Deutsch Lehrerin This year our school got to experience something that most schools just hear about. Frau Ingrid Stegmeyer, a native of Germany, was an exchange teacher at Princess Anne and Independence Junior High Schools. She was brought to us through the Fulbright Exchange Program. She and Fraulein Misskimmin, her American counterpart, switched places. To be a part of the Fulbright Program she first had to make application and then be interviewed by a committee of Germans and Americans. Language teachers are not the only teachers accepted, but selection is influenced by the subject taught. Frau Stegmeyer was born and reared in Dannaueschigen, West Germany. She described Donnaueschigen as a small town on the border of the Black Forest. The big cities around her hometown are Freiburg, Stuttgart, and Zurick, Switzerland. Frau Stegmeyer has taught German and English to fifth through ninth graders at Wenvinger Realschute. She commented that she enjoys teaching as well as living in Virginia Beach. She added that the Exchange Program which provides an opportunity for language teachers to live in the country where their native language is spoken can be very rewarding to both teachers and students. She has visited in America twice before with a group of German students — once to New York City and once to DEUTSCH I A. Coneeney, E. Boy, T. Hudson, |. Ingram, H. Peebles, R. Borchert, S.
