Ohio State? Wrong! Prince George JV football team. This year's squad ground out a fine 3-3-l record under the coaching of Ed Wisneski with assistance from Terry Schraner. This young, inexperienced squad fought off several injuries to key players as the Baby Royals crusaded across the goal line to win 3 out of their last 4 games. In their last game the Royals seemed to put it all together, leaving the Waverly team ab dazed as it watched the Royals grind out 29 points. The defense shut off opponents in 4 games not allowing a single score. The devasting defense only allowed an , 7 3 average of 3.4 points a game. The Baby At 3 -3 - 1 Royals lost some heart- breakers, but all in all it was a fine season. Since Coach Ed Wisneski took over at PG the team has suffered only one losing season. Coach Wisneski also teaches PE at the Jr. High. The coach commented that he felt that his young and inexperienced team performed well and that he was very pleased. You say you've heard of Olga but not the ff..-.ii-.ww other girls? At PGJHS these and other girls like them have become known for their talent and grace through the newly formed and highly appraised Tumbling Club. This is the first time in the history of PGJHS that a Tumbling Club has been claimed. It all started when a couple of girls asked Mrs. Rockett if a tumbling club could be organized. Mrs. Rockett then proceeded to higher authorities which then conceded to the organization of a Tumbling Club. The Club lacks much needed equipment, but it makes do with what it has. The Tumbling Club con- sists of about 45 girls in the it My Sth and 9th grades. Upon asking how the girls could benefit from this, Mrs. Rockett replied, The girls will learn many things in gymnastics A that they will need to know if l they plan to go on in this field of sports. The girls will be needing more equipment, but as far as talent goes, they have more than enough. Gymnastics, page I4 CENTER: Gymnastics calls for complete co-ordination and a physically fit body. The cheerleaders have been with both the football and basketball teams through victory and defeat, enjoying more victories than defeats. During every game, the cheerleaders would chant themselves into a state of spiritual frenzy, and finally achieve their goal: 100921 support from the fans. BELOW ROW l, LEFT TO RIGHT: R. Wooden, S. That was the case with the eighth grade cheerleaders this year. Cheering the eighth grade basketball team on to several victories, they also added a little spice to the game for both the players and the fans. These girls took their training from Mrs. Springfield and the Junior Varsity cheerleaders. With this background, they should be prepared to replace the departing ninth graders competently. The Baby Royals, led by Marvin Johnson who averaged over 20 points a game left opponents stammered by their power and speed. Michael Allen was tough under the boards, overpowering the opponents. The Royals squad marched over Colonial Heights, Thomas Dale, Gib- bons, Meadowbrook, Midlothian, Manchester and Dinwiddie to name a few. The JV team played an amazing man-to-man defense this season, holding most teams to under 40 or 50 points while their offense was hitting over 60 points in several games. This year's team had 8 sophomores and 6 freshmen making it by far the most experienced squad. Junior Varsity Basketball, page 21 ABOVE: ROW l, LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Jones, S. Whitt, J. Finlen, J. Real- izing this, the SCA spon- sored another food and clothing drive for the needy. The proceeds were sent to various organizations in Virginia. Patrick Henry Hospital received five boxes of foodg Prince George County received enough food and clothes for twelve families. Cancer was also aided this year. A basketball game be- tween the sexes was spon- sored with the proceeds going to the Cancer Fund. The game brought about 5500. Then there are the normal proceedings of the SCA. They sponsored a field day which was a success and another basketball game with the pro- ceeds going to the March of Dimes. All of this would not have been done without the officers: Terry Oakley, Presidentg Sharon Williams, Vice Presi- dentg John Duval, Secretaryg and Kathy Brissette and Sallie Close, Co-Treasurers. Education is attracting more and more people and most students are maturing more rapidly. The National Junior Beta Club is the place for devel- oping this type of student. It recognizes students who are above average and stand out in some way in the areas of leadership and scholarship. Once a year the Beta Club holds a tapping ser- vice. Every year is a new year because there are new people who respond differently to the set up we have. New people simply make each year unique, he explained. The FFA worked to finish another year of awards and accomplishments. There were forestry judgings, farm safety programs, hog evaluations, and landscaping projects. Major attention was aroused when the FFA won first place in the T.V. Downing FFA Federation Forestry Contest. Many of those home econ- omics students who possessed a deeper interest in the area joined the Future Homemakers of America. The group en- gaged in various school func- tions including entertaining teachers, helping the needy and helping to organize a new district federation. Yearbook Combines Sections, Wins VHSL Award The yearbook staff came to the conclusion that there were overall trends seemingly affecting the entire year. Problems included a gap with the young, an overcrowded school and a somewhat prevailing apathy among students. Pockets of liber- alism and concern, however, were discovered by the staff when in- vestigating student participation in Thanksgiving Baskets for the County, and support of the Basket- ball game to raise money for cancer. The staff worked hard on a new format to make the Gold Medal- lionf' more diversified and inter- esting to its readership nurtured on Soul Music, mod design and tele- vision. The first major change was meaty editorials which struck out at students and adminis- tration and caused comment by both. In addition, more news articles appeared with regularly appearing feature articles. Book reviews, a music column, and a club section complimented the news and Ted Vanko's sports section. Eighth graders Carl Rudzin and John Meanor joined the staff as regular student photographers. With a fluctuating, changing student body, the newspaper staff seemed to be more constant in 1973- 74. Ms. Brown was a major factor in the performance of the choir for several years, and her loss hurt the choir tremend- ously. This action resulted in the choirs' inability to par- ticipate with the band in the Pops Concert. The choir did sing for school assemblies. Ms. Brown was eventually replaced, but her work will be remembered. The majorettes delighted several audiences with their performances this year. Spon- sored by Mrs. Pearce and led by Head Majorette Terry Oakley, the majorettes made several impressive appear- ances. First came the half- time show for the football games, where they received a warm welcome. Next, the long hours of preparation showed when the girls unleased an exceptional performance in the Pops Concert. They also strutted at several assemblies for the student body. They still managed to impress a lot of people. Performances started with a halftime show at the Waverly football game. The show featured several popular tunes and a majorette routine. Next came auditions for the Regional Band, Rules and re- gulations pitted eighth and ninth graders against seniors in competition for the two regional bands. Prince George had a surprising number of people make the bands. The concert was held February 3. Later in the spring came the Pops Concert and the Spring Concert. J unlor High Changes When new people are incor- porated into a system, they bring new ideas with them which may improve the system. Such was the case at Prince George Junior High School this year as six new teachers were added to the faculty. Some of their ideas for dealing with specific problems were helpful to the faculty and the school. Change also came about in the student body. The new eighth graders showed the freshman a few things they didn't know. The ninth graders returned the favor by showing the eighth graders the ropes, in preparation for their two years at thejunior high school. When you enter into any kind of system, there are al- ways problems. If you have no solution to the problem, then you are only part of the prob- lem. ' Class of I977, page 55 Class of 1978 Joins Jr. High With New Ideas Last fall, the Class of 1978 entered the junior high school for the first time. Amidst new teachers, new courses, and a new school, the eighth graders quickly adjusted to their new environment and became in- volved in the activities of the school. Each day brought more and more maturity as the eighth grade teachers attempt- ed to make each class a new experience for their students. The eighth graders brought many good new ideas to the various clubs of the school. Each club benefitted from the new members as this new group of students actively en- gaged in bringing progress and change to the junior high dur- ing their two year stay. Administration, page 65 New Services Offered, Materials b O C tained in 373 '7 Offering expanded counseling services and information on job opportunities and skills, the Gui- dance Office at Prince George Ju- nior High School plowed headlong into the school year attempting to deal with the big and little prob- lems which haunt each student. Both counselors spent more time dealing with specific problems and attempted to become more familiar with students' problems by having conferences with family members as well as the student. Greater em- phasis was put on future needs when scheduling was done in the spring. Students were encouraged to take courses which would bene- fit them vocationally and avoca- tionally now and in the years to come. The library continued to benefit from local and federal funds di- rected at library improvement. What was once the weak point of the junior high school became stronger. Evidence of this was obvi- ous as more and more students used the library and circulation rose. In addition to the number of new books received. many new pe- riodicals were added to the shelves. Teachers made more and more use of the cable television system. Pro- grams were taped often by Mrs. Clements and Mr, Mumford and stored for future use. In the future, the library plans to purchase a tele- vision camera to use with this sys- tem to tape student produced pro- grams and special lessons. ABOVE: Mrs. Catherine H. Greene. With them came ideas to increase interest. participation. and desire to excel. From the teaching of poetry to grammar. students expressed themselves in a number ofdifferent ways. Offers Emphasis was naturally placed upon book reports. but teachers led their stu- dents into using more and more creativity. Drama ad- visor Mr. John Nicholson directed his students into a standing ovation in produc- tions presented for the school and community. Relief To remedy problems in reading, English teachers recommended certain stu- dents to work in the Reading Lab. The results were obvi- ous in all classes in a short time. The Optimist Club Or- atorical Contest sparked new interest in English and Dra- ma classes in public speak- ing. Teachers gave their stu- dents the opportunity to speak before a group and soon the butterflies had dis- appeared. fi mai. .sf K xg-2.r ..??k3m3F M.6'M ,w2awws1aii7S?fH5 --': ' - -if-'.,f .,f,3v-..1 ' Q ,fc ..rE:i'i:-2-1' ...HIT ' ' n:, fJ.W WSIS X .TS ' ' ' T'TfZT7 'A 'fZ7?'T'f T Ni- ,' '- gggzgm, ggy-R..-Q5g17,,:.,,wa if-331, I.,.g.,:f:, ,- .-gi .gf ...ge ,I ,,: ,wx-.g,.f.,,... ff 1,5 1:12-Hsiw, , .xl .Mi-wsz,:a's.2 .-.gfMig.'fiffffr??:f.i.
