A , ww- 'ov f -nz 2. . ,K K KKWK, 'K ,K ' ' 1 . . , . , , K S l MOST REVEREND LAURENCEI FITZSIZMON D D Bzshop of Amarzllo and Preszdent 0 Przce College 5935 Brshnqx 5 QQIULHP Amarrlln Hjlzzzasf 17 -'EBI +4 lay l 1953 Dearly Beloved 1n Christ Our Diocesan institution Price College has reached the first twenty-five years of its existence and with great satisfaction we contemplate the progress which has been made during this t1me In its humble and difficult beginnings, the flourishing state of Price College may surpass the dreams of its founder the Most Rev R A Gerken, the first Bishop of Amar1llo whose courage and vision gave to the new Diocese 1ts first Catholic boarding school for boys Providence aided him in the generous assistance received from Countess Price and through his term as Bishop of Amarillo as well as through the episcopate of the lost Rev Robert E Lucey as well as during my own time, Price Col lege has been the recipient of continued favors from the Price Foundation Supplementing the gifts from that source has been the contributions from the Catholic people of Amarillo and the Diocese and today we can View with pride the fine buildings on the campus of Price College Pr1ce College after the turn of a quarter century now repre sents both a material and a spiritual value in our city and in our Diocese Its properties and buildings may be considered to have a valuation of a m11110H dollars On the other hand its spiritual value cannot be estimated What has been accomplished here in education 1n religious training in the spiritual life, in the graces received and 1n the foundation of sound Chris t1an living indeed far exceeds the physical assets of Price College In the achievements realized in that field must we de rive our pleasure and satisfaction therein do we find the re ward and compensation for the many labors and sacrifices that have accompanied the administration of Price College for twen- ty-five years. Again I thank the Brothers of the Christian Schools for their zealous devotion to the ideals of Christian educationg I am grateful to the Parent Teachers Association and to the many friends of Price College for their assistance: I deeply appre- ciate the loyalty of the parents of our students. My cordial greetings and congratulations to Price College, to the Faculty, to the students and particularly to the Graduating Class of 1953. The Cardinals came back next week to claw the OSX McLean Tigers into the ground 19-0. They dropped the Amarillo Yannigans with ease by a score of 26-0, and just scraped by the Dimmitt Bobcats in a 'I4-12 thriller. Though not an impressive one, the record does not tell the whole story. Many of the games could have gone either way, as can be seen in the close scores, especially in our defeats. Thirteen wins with ll losses made up the 24 game schedule. The team fought to the portals of victory, but lacked that extra punch that would have opened wide access to the laurel wreath. After the Christmas holidays the Cardinals travelled to humble with a 42-33 score the powerful Stinnett team that had previously defeated them on their own floor, 68-50. This game truly showed the timbre of the Cardinal five. ln the Vega, Channing, Friona, Sunray and Hereford games, both players and fans left the gym shaking their heads in sad bewilderment, always feeling that the Cardinals would have won, if- The loss of two all state men with a leading scorer would have left a hole in any team. Still the Cardinals carried home from Happy a consolation award and an all tournament nominee in the person of Tom Kelly. The attitude of the team, that of champions undefeated, can be traced to the efforts of Coach Hap Rogers, who constantly advocated unyielding drive. AW On the Twenty second morning of February the Cardinal basketball team left Amarillo to attend the annual Texas Catholic Basketball Tournament sponsored by St Marys University in San Antonio Texas After the colorful and enloyable trip the team arrived early enough In the evening to have a light work out before supper Deep sleep in Fort Cam Houston closed the first day of the memorable trip Friday started fittingly with Holy Mass and Communion At one oclock in the afternoon the Cardinals took to the floor against St Edward s of Austin The favored Cardinals saw the game go into an overtime period as a result of the stubborn later that same Friday the Cardinals watched the tables turn to favor Corpus Christ: High School The game was all for the opposition with the Cards trailing by 15 points at the half The hustlmg redbirds bounced back In the second half out playing their opponents by five points a good margin but hardly enouqh with the handicap given the towering ounes from C C And Price went down in a 76 65 defeat The elimination so early In the tournament was hard to take but the team braced themselves to make the best of their stay in San Antone ,M,s.7 , ,.
