Sodality l-2-3-4 Prevost Staff l CLASS PROPHECY 0 After completing plans for a Trans-Siberian airline with our foreign office in Geneva, Switzerland, I boarded the plane bound for Boston when a distin- guished looking, baldheaded gentleman came and sat next to me. To my amaze- ment, it was none other than MAURICE HAMEL, who told me that he had just purchased the world's largest uncut diamond for his flourishing jewelry trade which now comprised thirty of the most elaborate establishments both here and abroad. As we talked over old times he told me that ROBERT HOUDE had just received the award as the most valuable draftsman for Fisher Body Co., in Detroit, Michigan. He also informed me that ROLAND BERARD and that noble Southerner RAYMOND BOUCHARD now had one of the most efficient accounting offices in the state of Massachusetts. As we alighted from our plane, whom did we meet running out on the run- way that had just departed, but NRMAND ROUTHIER. I-le told us that he was now in the last year of his Z0-year enlistment in the United States Navy. It reminded me of school days, as Roots was always noted for arriving late. I made my report at the office of Northeast Air Lines of which I had now assumed the General Managership. Maurice's chauffeur met us in a Rolls-Royce, and we departed for a weekend in Fall River. We stopped at Howard Johnsorfs, near the Blue Hills, for an appetizer of fried clams. In the restaurant we met ANDRE PARADIS who was now a high pressure salesman for the Melville Shoe Corporation in New England. He told us that his bosom friend of high school days, ROLAND FRAZIER, was now the General Manager for Auclair's Market in Fall River. Upon arriving in the city, I purchased a copy of the Herald News and there on the front page was the story about GENERAL ROMEO GUIMOND'S appointment as Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army. Also on the front page I noticed that JOSEPH DUCAS had recently assumed the head of the state Bureau of Foods and Drugs. Opening the journal I observed that PIERRE LAJOIE was now the Editor-in-Chief. Maurice dismissed his chauffeur, and I suggested we drop into Liggett's for a few Havanas. Entering the store we met ROBERT BOUSQUET now the manager of the Fall River establishment. He introduced us to the one in charge of pharmaceutical preparations, Mr. LAURENT MARCHAND. We had a light lunch and Maurice suggested a ride around our fair city. Starting off he told me that Fall River was now the permanent home of the United Nations. Auvr .,-.. 1 mu. As we entered the Council Chamber, the radio engineer motioned us to remain silent. I looked twice for who was he but REGINALD DESNOYERS. After the broadcast he told us that he was now the chief techni- cian for WSAR. While talking with John L., his campaign manager walked in. To my surprise it was none other than ARMAND LEVESQUE who told us that he had taken time off from his job as head of the largest advertising firm in New England to promote john L's. campaign. He informed me that ARTHUR GAMACHE was now the Manager of Leo's Ice Cream Co. John L. asked us if we would like to go out to the municipal airport with him and survey the work being done on enlarging the local field. The three of us got into John L's. new Chrysler, honestly purchased, and riding along North Main St., I noticed a large truck terminal, and I asked Maurice what it wasr He told me that it was the Fall River branch of the Berube Transportation Co. and that RAYMOND BERUBE the owner was now one of the most prosperous men in Fall River. xRay did much of the trucking for his brother LEONARD BERUBE, who was now manager of the New England division of Stop 85 Shop. V Upon our arrival at the airport, we were greeted by surveyors ROGER MERCIER and EDWARD BERARD who had the contract for all the grading work. While we were there, the plane from New York arrived and ANDRE MOREAU, who was now a consulting aeronautical engineer at Lockheed Aviation, disembarked with ARTHUR VALCOURT, one of the nation's top men in the field of Electronics. On the way back to the center, I inquired about the city's best eating es- tablishment. We soon found ourselves in a lavish restaurant. The head waiter seated us at one of the ringside tables. The owner walked by and who was it but WILLIAM LEBLANC. He showed us a magazine in which there was an article about MAURICE GIRARD, Captain of the S.S, America, pride of the Merchant Marine Fleet. X M Leaving the building, we happened to hear the news echoing from a nearby radio shop: EDWARD BOUCHARD receives the National Geographic Society Medal for being the first human ever to climb Mount Everest . Then the mayor invited us to spend the evening with him at his box in the Durfee Theatre to attend the premiere of that much talked about motion picture relating the life of the most famous baseball manager of all times. The name of this picture was: THE LIFE OF HECTOR DION, starring ALBERT TREMBLAY as HECTOR DION. I noticed on one of the lodges GERALD GOYE'I'I'E, who was well known as the foremost motion picture producer of the day. At our hotel rooms Maurice tuned in a night baseball game and soon we found ourselves gazing into a tele- vision screen. There was a heated argument going on and we saw ARMAND GAGNON, manager of the Boston Braves, being ejected from the game. Rising early, we left the hotel to finish out our tour of the city. As we were leaving, we met ANDRE CHAGNON, the business manager of the Elbe File Co., arriving to meet the out-of-town representative for his company. He told us that GEORGE LEBREUX was now established in his own office at the Granite Block as a Certified Public Accountant. Maurice stopped at a nearby filling station for gas. To our amazement the owner of the garage was RAYMOND BERNIER. As we motored up South Main St., I noticed a magnificent package store. The owner turned out to be BERNARD BARSELOU, the you-haven't-got-the-zip boy. All of a sudden I felt a pain in my mouth and I asked Maurice to take me to the nearest dentist. As we entered the office I noticed that it was an association of doctors all graduated from Prevost. PHILIP LAVOIE came over to work on me. He informed me that he was in a partnership with GERARD DUQUETTE, and that MARCEL ROBILLARD, who was a dental technician, completed the trio. After talking over old times, we left to pay a visit to our Alma Mater. Driving along Pleasant St., I noticed the milk plant GUIMOND and LAPIERRE Milk Inc., entering the plant, Don told us that they were expecting LUCIEN PINEAULT and RENE CADRIN, public accountants, to arrive and audit their books. He also showed us the new addition going up. The head man on the job was GEORGE BEAUDOIN. Saying goodbye to our friends we reached the school a few minutes later. As we entered one of the buildings, I beard a familiar voice echoing from the Trig class. Yes it was ROBERT RENAUD on leave from his position as a professor of mathematics at M.I,T. We then entered the gymnasium and saw RAYMOND GIASSON giving instructions to his squad before a championship game, for the past three years Prevost had been undisputed champions of the state of Massachusetts. After bidding farewell to the Brothers, we stopped for a drink at Talbot's Lafayette Pharmacy. The manager was now ALBERT DUSSAULT and with him was his old friend ROGER MORIN now chief machinist for the Craftsman Tool Co. Maurice and I now had to leave Fall River and move on to New York as we both had pressing business to attend to there. Upon arriving in the busy metropolis I made my way to our New York offices where I signed another five year contract with the Oil King of the nation, ROMEO FORTIN, to furnish all the high-octane fuel for all the Northeast airliners serving New England and New York. I decided that for the evening's entertainment we should take in the Opera. At the Metropolitan Opera House we witnessed RENE LATINVILLE who was now acclaimed as a second Caruso in a great rendition of Il Travatoi-e . After a heart-warming performance we congratulated Rene in his dressing room. He said he had a surprise for us and showed us the latest copy of Life Magazine. On the cover, we saw the picture of ROGER BERARD, an army Z0-year mang the accompanying story stated that he was due to wed the daughter of the Presi- dent of the United States in two months. Looking further on, we saw a photo of SAMUEL FORD accepting the Nobel Prize for Engineering. We were happy to see that Benny had succeeded in the work he loved so well. Rene then told us that History repeats itself by showing us the fact that ROGER CHOUINARD, the Editor-in-Chief of the 1948 Annual was now Editor- in-Chief of Life Magazine. By this time we all felt a gentle need to fill our stomachs, so we left for the night club frequented by all the Met stars, the USS, 2l Club. We were enjoying ourselves when Rene called the owner of the establishment. After twenty long years, we met our old buddy, none other than ARMAND ROY. Being a well to do man about town and big game hunter, he brought us out to his mansion on Long Island and showed us his collection of guns and trophies. He also told us that CHARLES LAFOND now had a chain of pharmacies in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan. Maurice then left me to return to France, as he had some very important business to attend to there. I returned to my home in Los Angeles where I was to resume my position after my European jaunt. After twenty long years, Maurice and I were happy to see that all our former classmates had achieved their ambitions and were living up to the educa- tion they had received at Msgr. Much credit must be given to Sodality officers who made the C. V. H. meetings the blueprints of their lives. Organizing discussion groups in the classes, and directing Sodality work with painstaking perseverance, their work was highly commendable. Our new Sodality chaplain, Reverend Raymond Hamel, endowed with the zeal of a crusader, was always on hand to dispense the word of God and uplift a fallen soul with spiritual advice. He received forty new members into the Sodality at an impressive ceremony held in Notre Dame Church. Vocation Week, World Sodality Day, Perfect Week-End, Five First Saturdays, Bundle Drive, Pilgrimages, Amateur Night, Poor Souls Collection, Holy Childhood Drive, Character Building, are some of the projects carried our by the Sodality, without mentioning the spiritual endeavor with regard to the acquisition of virtues - espe- cially purity. We, the Sodalists, have dedicated our work and our lives to the Blessed Virgin, and we pray our Dear Mother to remain with us and guide us always. Arfhur Guinarlu' SODALITY OFFICERS Reverend R. Our school paper, The Prevost, is held highly by the student body. It is considered an important factor in the development of strong school spirit besides offering the staff of editors an excellent op- portunity to learn the fundamentals of journalism. To single out the outstanding contributors to the paper might be detrimental to the host of editors who did their best, however little it seems to the censorious eye. However, in pointing out the excellent work accomplished by Maurice Hamel, Paul Allaire and Edward Bou- chard we do justice to them and to the paper. The genial moderator, Brother Eugene, has again expertly directed the school paper through a successful year, and the graduates of '48 wish him continued progress for the year to come. Gagnon THE PREVOST ORCHESTRA Made up predominantly of younger talent, the Prevost Orchestra made its auspicious debut at the annual Amateur Night. Many wondered about its reju- venation, but under the enthusiastic leadership of Mr. Louis P. Gamache, the orchestra picked up immensely. Once more it delighted audiences by a vast repertoire of classical and semi-classical selections. The 30-piece ensemble was honored to play at the twenty-fifth anniversary of Brother Alexander, and for many distinguished audiences throughout the city. The Prevost Orchestra strove to be both artistic and entertaining. It made us appreciate the value of musical education and taste the joy that comes from the combining of talents into a single body of musicians. The former Durfee coach was bringing a wealth of experience, psychology and knowledge of the game which proved invaluable to the current edition. In fact, the Maple Leafs enjoyed their IHOSI successful season since the incep- tion of the sport, winning eleven and dropping eight decisions. Coach Nawrocki is a staunch believer in hard work, discipline and punctuality. He un- tiringly drilled this threefold program into his charges and eventually it paid dividends. The boys who had the privilege of being tutored by this unselfish and devoted man owe him an unpayable debt of gratitude. Coaching Basketball at the Eastern Avenue institution has been and will always be an ungrateful task, as long as athletic accommodations remain in the status quo. Therefore our hoop pilot deserves great credit for his remarkable achievement in the face of terrific handicaps. They opened the regular season in lightning fashion, copping their first five verdicts over rugged opposition. This unprecedented achievement allowed Prevost to take possession of first place in the league standing for the first time in the history of the school. However, January 30, was the fateful night the Maple Leafs were to taste the bitter fruits of defeat. Dartmouth, always a tartar on its own floor, refused to show any mercy and thus became the first team to humiliate the East Enders in league play. As if stricken by panic our basketeers lost the next two contests before bouriding back against Dighton. Oddly enough, the White and Blue was the only team capable of toppling Dighton on its own court. The victories hung up by Prevost on the hardwood were the net result of good coaching, unselfish teamwork and an undeniable fighting spirit, the latter being perhaps the most distinc- tive characteristic of the team. As a matter of fact, our present aggregation could not boast of an outstanding star. Consequently, such a record would have been unattainable without the cooperative efforts of all the players and their eagerness to carry out the coach's assignments. Robert Renaud, our sixffoot guard, deserves special recognition for his inspiring and re- lentless play. Playing his second year of basketball, he progressed by leaps and bounds. His backboard clearance job more than once kept Prevost in the thick of the fray and was something to marvel at. His services are going to be sorely missed next year. Roger Morin: this name is synon mous of grit and determination. Overbubbling with school spirit, Roger never quit even aflier being injured early in the season. As soon as he re- ceived permission from his physician to resume his playing chores, this blond dynamo immed- iately injected new life in his teammates. He was our side-court, set-shot artist especially at Dighton where he broke the backs of the Gold and Blue hoopsters with his deadly shots. Samuel Benny Ford, a veteran, was released from army duty right in the nick of time. Although bothered by short-windedness, Benny was a model of steadfastness, willpower and readiness to help in a clutch. Mr. Nawrocki is still wondering how he would have been able to carry on without him. This young man's sterling character, unbounded courage and indomit- able spirit have set a beautiful pattern that the future Prevost hoopsters may well follow. Hector Chocolate Dion is the only Senior who can claim the distinction of having played four years for his Alma Mater. His remarkable ball-handling at times dazzled the opposition. He teamed up perfectly with Renaud. His experience and uncanny accuracy on long shots turned the tide in many a game. Our diminutive Phil,' Lavoie, handicapped by an uncontrollable factor: lack of height, performed chiefly for the Jayvees, and relief chores for the varsity. The poise, coolness and skill which he exhibited served to steady his younger teammates. He had a beautiful one-hand shot which he controlled almost at will. The only non-Senior member on the squad was our stocky Sophomore center, Rene Ban- ville. His versatility and scoring proficiency earned him a well-deserved spot on the All-star team: Besides being high scorer, Banville excelled as a capable backboard clearer and play- fnakef. Our Jayvees, with Bill Labrie, Ronald Duval, Maurice Clairmont, Leonard Levasseur, Robert Gagne, and Zeke Valiquette gave credit to their school and themselves by winning thirteen of their eighteen games. Such an enviable record is due to the hard work, perfect harmony and splendid teamwork of one and all. With only Banville returning from the Varsity next year, many of these boys are slated to play an important role in next year's hoop destinies at Prevost. In conclusion, let us repeat that the only hopes for a perennial leadership in sports at Prevost, will come when the gym and other athletic facilities are recognized as being an in- tegral part of an educational setup. . , ,. 2' .
