SYLVESTER C. ANDERSON As a highway is constructed, it winds, it climbs, but never ends. It has many byways, many pathways which fork and branch into little trails leading farther and farther from the main highway. As we travel these pathways we encounter many impassable barriers which tell us we must stop, we cannot succeed. Travel be- comes dangerous and even dull. As we about-face in the opposite direction we learn the path improves and our tempo increases. How we delight as the highway is again reached. We get the feeling of achievement and a desire to compete. The pathway to success and achievement in school life at Preston High is much the same. Wlien we follow the path of least resistance and start down the pathway of neglect, many temptations and barriers block our way. We lose the interest so necessary to our maxi- mum achievement. Out books become burdens, our teachers boor us. No man has ever become great without earnest effort. Yes, it takes perseverance and sweat, at times. to realize the successful goal which is important in life. The man who follows the highway with a goal or destination in mind finds new interests, new pleas- ures and even forgets the sweat and toil as he nears his destination. The span between success and failure is very narrow in life. It may be the lack of proper values or goal in mind to strive for, or the idlers path which ends in failure. Perhaps it may be lack of determination to work toward a goal. This brief message, to you, fine students of Preston High-your future is in your own hands. Your destiny is what you make it. The power is yours, the facilities are here. The faith and aspirations of your parents for your success are back of you. An outstanding staff of qualified teachers are here to help and will help you succeed if you will but try. Remember, the top requires toil, sweat, desire and perseverance. The bottom requires nothing but neglect, waste of time and lack of desire. Follow the main highway and your destination will soon be reached. Sylvester C. Anderson, Principal.
