Great Floats' Time Spirit ond enthusiasm filled the student body during homecoming week. During this rime, the cheerleaders arranged various ideas for spirit week. Mondoy was hair ond face day. olong with inside-out ond backwards. Tuesday was girls ignore guys and guys ignore girls day. Wednes- day was senior citizen doy; Thursday, pa- jama day; and Friday, scum doy. The cheerleaders also arranged a tug-of-war between the grades during the noon hours. The Seniors won for the senior high, ond the eighth grade won it for the junior high. Friday morning was devoted to a pepfesr and the building of floats. The porode started at 2:45 with the bond leading the way. Next came the junior high floats, followed by the royalty, ond bringing up the end were the senior high floors. Thor night the Joys defeated the Lonesborro Burros by o whopping score of 52-6. The rock bond GEMINI attracted many oreo students to the donee following the gome. Events Make Year Memorable In the Preston-Founrain School District, by for the biggest news of the year was the fire that destroyed the entire bus fleer on June 12, 1983. Starred accidentally when leaking gasoline hit o hot trouble light, flames spread quickly. The entire building containing oil of Preston-Founrain's buses was soon engulfed. Repairs were mode over the summer to buses that could be fixed, ond the rest were either replaced with new buses or temporary looners. As o result, school did begin on rime in the foil. For owoy, but oil too close to home, wos the violence in Lebanon. Students watched each night os it seemed the casualty list of U.S. Marines grew larger, ond new efforts were mode to sign o ceasefire. Flogs flew at holf-most in the Preston area in the weeks following the terrorist bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon on Oc- tober 23, 1983. The devastation wos so total that it rook many weeks for the final death roll of over 230 to come in. The price of peace ond war become dear. The economy began its recovery in good fashion this year. Unemploy- ment slid below 9% for the first rime in two years, inflation wos or its lowest levels in ot least o decode, and store revenues rebounded from deficits to surpluses. Shopping in Rochester become o bit more expensive however when the city imposed its first 1% soles rox on top of the state s 6% rox. The fox rook effect on October 1. After months of wrangling, o new notional holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King wos established by Con- gress this yeor to be effective on the third Monday in January of 1986. In o slop of irony to communist Polish regime, Lech Walesa wos awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. All foil Polish officials hod been trying to discredit the morals of the Solidarity leader. It oil come to nought when he wos awarded the prize. Major sports fans were somewhat our of luck this post yeor. The Min- nesota Gophers football ream pro- bably hod the worst record ever. They won bur one gome oil season. The Vikings did somewhat better, but still seemed to lose when they shouldn’t. As the cadence wos ployed, the bond morched in to serve os honor guards while the attendants ond candidates walked to the stage. The ex- citement come to o climax when Tom Wilson ond Tomi Schibursky were crowned King ond Queen Even though the fire wasn't burning high the school spirit wos.
