Also, rhe vocational secretaries were moved ro the high school ond a new ISS room wos established. Football proved ro be o ' long distance reaching out to the Wykoff School District. This formed the ever-powerful Presron- Fountoin-Wykoff Bluejays. Another change in sports wos in the cooching staff for boys Always Reaching basketball. Dick Irish rook rhe place of rhe retiring Ken Denny. Through the year, teachers ond staff helped students ro reach their goals in their studies. Opening 0 Events Make Year Memorable In the Preston-Founrain School District, by for the biggest news of the year was the fire that destroyed the entire bus fleer on June 12, 1983. Starred accidentally when leaking gasoline hit o hot trouble light, flames spread quickly. The entire building containing oil of Preston-Founrain's buses was soon engulfed. Repairs were mode over the summer to buses that could be fixed, ond the rest were either replaced with new buses or temporary looners. As o result, school did begin on rime in the foil. For owoy, but oil too close to home, wos the violence in Lebanon. Students watched each night os it seemed the casualty list of U.S. Marines grew larger, ond new efforts were mode to sign o ceasefire. Flogs flew at holf-most in the Preston area in the weeks following the terrorist bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon on Oc- tober 23, 1983. The devastation wos so total that it rook many weeks for the final death roll of over 230 to come in. The price of peace ond war become dear. The economy began its recovery in good fashion this year. Unemploy- ment slid below 9% for the first rime in two years, inflation wos or its lowest levels in ot least o decode, and store revenues rebounded from deficits to surpluses. Shopping in Rochester become o bit more expensive however when the city imposed its first 1% soles rox on top of the state s 6% rox. The fox rook effect on October 1. After months of wrangling, o new notional holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King wos established by Con- gress this yeor to be effective on the third Monday in January of 1986. In o slop of irony to communist Polish regime, Lech Walesa wos awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. All foil Polish officials hod been trying to discredit the morals of the Solidarity leader. It oil come to nought when he wos awarded the prize. Major sports fans were somewhat our of luck this post yeor. The Min- nesota Gophers football ream pro- bably hod the worst record ever. They won bur one gome oil season. The Vikings did somewhat better, but still seemed to lose when they shouldn’t. During this rime, the cheerleaders arranged various ideas for spirit week. Mondoy was hair ond face day. olong with inside-out ond backwards. Tuesday was girls ignore guys and guys ignore girls day. Wednes- day was senior citizen doy; Thursday, pa- jama day; and Friday, scum doy. The cheerleaders also arranged a tug-of-war between the grades during the noon hours. The Seniors won for the senior high, ond the eighth grade won it for the junior high. Friday morning was devoted to a pepfesr and the building of floats. The porode started at 2:45 with the bond leading the way. Next came the junior high floats, followed by the royalty, ond bringing up the end were the senior high floors. Thor night the Joys defeated the Lonesborro Burros by o whopping score of 52-6. The rock bond GEMINI attracted many oreo students to the donee following the gome. October 11 Don Honsen ond Koren Hougerud come bock to their alma moter to crown the 1963 Homecoming King ond Queen For the first time corono- rion wos on Tuesdoy night, so they could reign the whole week New choirs for the King ond Queen were purchased by the Student Council. As the cadence wos ployed, the bond morched in to serve os honor guards while the attendants ond candidates walked to the stage. All five members were seniors with only one returning member. Eoch week, the cost toped the show Fridoy ofter school, in pro- ducer Mr. O'Reilly's clossroom. Topics in- cluded on the show were sports, oreo school ploys, locol school hoppenings ond movie reviews. Also adding on interesting touch to the show were guest speakers. The 15th seoson opened with on interview with Jacques Reidelberger. Eoch Saturday, the show broadcasts could be heard on KFIL of 11:45 o.m An estimoted 54,000 listeners tuned in eoch week. Editor Lisa Clement worked many hours to get oil the articles typed ond pur together to meet the deodlines. Somehow, the paper always managed to get published. Some of the news items in- cluded Homecoming, sports, music, school gossip ond senior interviews. Assembling pictures, drawing layouts and meeting deadlines is nothing new to the yearbook stoff. The yearbook staff drew on o lorger-rhon overage staff of 25 members to do oil those things this time oround. including 2 new photographers. Most of the staff was inexperienced, ond that proved to be o challenge to correct their initial mistakes. Lost summer, to help increase the quali- ty of the yearbook, four staff members were sent to the Toylor Yearbook Workshop held ot Sr. John's University near Sr. Cloud in August. Prom Groduot ion 19 Progressive Ager's The June Porenr-Member Bonquer began the year for rhe Future Formers of America where o number of awards were presented and 1980-1984 officers were named. In August rhe new officers met to decide the activities to participate in this year. In September the FFA sent two delegates to rhe Fall Leadership Meeting in Harmony. This years activities olso included a number of judging contests such as rhe World Dairy Expo on October 8, 1983. Here. Preston Fountain placed 35rh out of the 144 reams. Members olso attended the Waseca Dairy Contest and the Westby In- vitational. The FFA also sold candy Mon- days after school and at rhe concession stand during rhe girls' basketball gomes. Foil All-School Ploy 25 Lively One Act Earns Its Way to Tough Region Competition Afrer weeks of anguished rhoughr, Presfon-Founroin selected The Importance of Being Earnest'' by Oscar Wilde os its entry In the Minnesota State High School League An- nuol One Act Ploy competition. After o shoky start, steady improvement was seen in the ploy from the public performance given on January 14 os o dress reheorsol to the sub- district competition held ot Presron-Fountoin High on January 21 Earnest'' come in 1st, receiving 2 A s and on A+. With that victory under their belt, cost ond crew traveled to the district competition in Houston on Jonuory 28. Again they morched owoy victorious with o first place, ond 2 A s ond on A+. Tough competition was waiting for them ot Winono State however in the regionol competition. Traditional nemisis. Lake City, walked our with the first place trophy, ond Preston hod to settle for o second ploce tie (with on A, on A-, ond o 0+) with Rochester Lourdes. Critics roved about the production's fine costumes ond clever set arrangement, os well os the degree of understanding the cost demonstrated of o rather difficult ploy. For the first time with the opening of the computer lob, two semester-long courses In the use ond programming of computers were offered. Doth proved to be populor courses with many students. During the other five hours of the day, students of oil levels could be found In the computer lob, either writing their own pro- grams or running some of the software cur- rently ovoiloble. It was very unusual to see the machines sitting idle for very long. But in addition, the computer was used for the first time to schedule oil classes, ond print up the end of quarter report cords. With the new format come inevitable changes (ond not oil of them for the better), but generally they were very well received. Most of the other changes in other deport- ments come from change of personnel, ond were relatively minor in noture. A few new changes brought on this excite- ment including complete uniforms bought with the money the girls raised lost year selling jackets. The girls also hod quite o bit of ex- perience after losing one team member due to graduation and returning 12 letter winners. Returning pitchers Liso Lowsfuen and Lynoe Fretlond proved to be o great help with their strong arms. Vickie Dohl. Kris Doley. Even though they ployed some larger teams the girls gave it their oil and ended the season winning more gomes than they lost. Players Gain Experience The 1963 boys’ boseboll team sow many new faces of up- coming players. Due to graduation the ream lost many starters from 1962. Mr. Jaszewski olso resigned his coaching duties to the new head coach. Gory Feine. Their record was only 2 wins. 14 losses but according to Coach Feine the pitching deportment mode great strides in throwing more consistent strikes. All team members did im- prove greatly over the season, ond the young players got experience ploying varsity. A 7-6 loss to Leroy-Ostronder in the final gome of the season kept the Blue Crew out of the state playoffs. The area's most potent offense (in terms of points scored) combined with o stingy defense to give the Joys greot reom balance. The team's 6-3 record gave Cooch Frank Joszewski another winning season and plenty of optimism for the future. After several years of building, they managed to finish this year second in the Maple Leaf Conference behind undefeated Harmony. It has been a major effort to get the team members to work together on their mutual effort toward victory. When they hove been together, they have been able to do great things. Much improvement was seen in the leadership qualities of Paul Dux- bury, Jeff Goutcher, and Joy Meyer who returned from last year's B-Squod. These players and many others, both A and B Squad should provide Coach Irish with fine talent for future varsity clubs. Coach Irish replaced Ken Denny as A-Squod coach after 17 years at the helm where KD” compiled a 289 win and 88 loss record.
