1977 HERITAGE PRESTON-FOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL PRESTON, M55965 VOLUME 54 IN DEDICATION We dedicate the 1977 HERITAGE to Mr. Elmer C. Slostad. Superintendent of Schools. who has spent many dedicated years in the halls of P-FHS, and has played an influential and inspiring part in the grow th and in improvement of our school system. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Yesterday 8 Today 20 Tomorrow 54 Senior Index 84 Faculty Index 85 General Index 86 Ads 88 A yearbook is something that takes a lot of effort to put together, hut ends up as something to re- member. Many hours were spent in the prepara- tion of our yearbook and a great many people offered their services to make sure it became THE book. A very special thank-you goes to Mr. Garry Post, who designed the cover and added a finish- ing touch to make it what it is now when we decided that it needed a change. Mr. David Hokcn- son, our advisor, also made our yearbook exist, as he took out time from his schedule to volunteer his services as advisor. Mr. Richard Fraser, photo- grapher in Cresco, Iowa, provided the many need- ed pictures for the success of our book. Also, a very special thanks goes to our editor, Theresa Devlin, who has put in many hours to make this book a success. Tim Barth and Flip Huggenvik were not to be outdone, and, after many hours themselves, produced the pictures we used and also spent much of their time taking and develop- ing the individual class pictures, a new addition to the book. The staff of the 1977 HERITAGE should also be thanked for their effort to make our book what it is today. 3 He seems To have seen better «lays, as who has not Who has seen yesterday? —Lord Byron 4 Tomorrow—oh twill never be If we should live a thousand years! Although the Jay failed to win the conference championship, they proved their willingness ami proved themselves by outscoring their opponents 150-66. The offensive line consisted of Boh McKenzie, Charles Bes- to r. Kevin Reirks, Bruce Miller. Dave Snyder. Mark Larson, and John Ristau. These players did a fine job of holding hack the teams and opening holes for Mike Nehring, Pat Falkncr. Dave Mensink. and Joe Afseth. This year Dave Mensink led the team in rushing with 1,144 yards in 262 carries, an average of 4.36 yards a carry, and scor- ing 12 touchdowns. Dave also led the team in tackles followed by Boh McKenzie and Charles Bestor. This year, the Seniors on the team were Mike Nehring, Pat Falkner, Dave Mensink. and Joe Afseth. Also a pecial tribute to those hoys who did not plav. but worked hard in practices. If they had not been there the team would not have done so well. The B team was coached by Mr. Irish. They compiled a 2-4 record. The B team boys all worked very hard, and those coming up to join the A team are sure to he a valuable asset. The C team, coached by Mr. Falkner. had a very Irving season this year. Much of the credit for the seventh grade's success should go to the coaches. The boys had a quick, good shooting hall team. They also had help from the bench when they needed it. With a good season last year the eighth grade team looked to be a top contender this year, but things didn't work out that way. After loosing the first two games the boys came back with a win over Wykoff. In the next game against Chatfield. After many nights of Midnight Madness , the yearbook staff found that these crazy hours got the job done for them. The yearbook staff met ev- ery Monday ami Thursday evening in order to es- tablish goals that had to he met. Unlike last year, this year's staff was required to meet two dead- lines for the completion of the hook. At these times. Midnight Madness proved to come through successfully for the weary staff. One major change made by the staff was that of having individual pictures instead of group class pictures. With the help of the staffs two photog- raphers. this was accomplished quite smoothly. On September 21. the major staff, photographers, and the staffs advisor traveled to the University ol Minnesota in St. Paul to attend the annual Min- nesota High School Press Association Convention. The day was spent going from session to session and learning various things about producing the annual from representatives of yearbook companies. Annual sales hit a record high this year in com- parison to previous year's sales. These sales wouldn't be possible without the support of the student body, faculty, and all others who bought the yearbooks and also to those who submitted advertisements. All in all. there were six issues put out over the 1976-77 school year. At first the staff had to scramble to get the paper together on time, hut with much co-operation, each paper came along at a much smoother rate. The BLUEJAY BUGLE staff was very large and cooperative this year. Co-edi- tors Lori Knoepke ami Jackie Damme, reallv enjoyed all the work and the re- sults which they are sure everybody else did too. A big thank you goes to Mr. O’Reilly, the advisor. With his heavy schedule, he pulled the co-editors out of many problems. Concerts, contests and festivals are also a very important part of a hand mem- bers life. Some of the contests were Honor Band. All State Tryouts, Small Group Solo En- semble Contest, I irge Group Contest and Re- gional Small Group Contest. Pep Band also served to generate enthusiasm at all the hoy's and girl's games they played for throughout the year. On April second, the hand journeyed to Laneshoro, MN to participate in the Small Group Contest for this area. There were 72 in- strumentalists w ho gave solos and 21 ensembles also performed. Along with all the hectic schedules for the members, they still found time to practice every .Monday. Wednesday and Fridays as a full hand and have Woodwind sec- tionals on Tuesdays and have Brass and Per- cussion sectionals on Thursdays every seventh hour. The Senior Band also hopes to be able to get new uniforms this next fall for the many ac- tivities they will be pc rforming at. Though through all the challenges that faced the hand members, the musie seemed to continue on all the same. Band Beats Dynamic Rhythm SENIOR BAND (Above): 1st Row—Tom Tienter. Jerome Oram. The arrangement was primarily the same as last year, with Ju- nior High Choir fifth hour and Senior High Choir sixth hour. A trip to Caledonia to exehange songs was a highlight of Senior Choir this year. The Choirs sang songs for one another and then joined together and sang a few songs. The Madrigal, another important part of the Voeal section, performet! on many different occasions for churches and other activities, and gave a fabulous Madrigal Concert. Ac- companied by the Recorders, they also took a trip to Des Moines where they watched a concert and sang for a Church service. The Junior High Choir also had a successful year. The proceeds went to the junior class as traditional. The hard-working cast put in 7 weeks of practice. Their presentation of Life of the Party on November 11, 12, and 13, was a smash. The general theme of Hughes' family life in the 1950’s added a touch of nostalgia. The family has just moved to Butterfield. Mrs. Hughes has her heart set on being a member of the Clover Club. Oldest daughter Mildred finds herself in love with a son of a hanker. Their studi- ous daughter Jean thinks she is in love with a smooth-talking man about school. She sheds her glasses and books and becomes Life of the Party. Amy, a rowdy cheer- leader, adds some laughs and falls in love for the first time. Teddy ends up with four dates for the party—until the girls get wise. And what a party! A lovers' spat sends a girl driving Teddy's car on the neighbor's lawns. The noise disturbs the neighbors and Mr. Hughes ends up with a black eye because of it. The leather gang arrives along with the police. The final scene opens with the fam- ily the next morning. As Amy reads the newspaper reports, all plead for silence. Of- ficer Lipscomb adds some laughs as the cur- tain falls. An Inspector Answers,” a play in one act, by Norman Phillip Hart, was unlike anything the drama department had ever done. Under the direction of Robert O'Reilly and the dedication of the cast members, the one act was a success. Af- ter many weeks of rehearsals, the play was presented to the public, as well as to the student body, and was well received by both. On the following two Saturdays, the play received superior ratings at both Sub-district and District which en- titled it to advance to Regional. Upon arriving at Regional Competition in Austin. Preston gave the first of seven very good plays. After a long day, the cast and crew found that, in a very close race, Preston had taken Alternate to State. Of seven plays, Preston was rated second. This play of crosses, double-crosses, and triple-crosses opens with the seemingly innocent disappearance of Lady Fitz- buttress. Her husband. Sir Reginald, is tricked into confessing to her murder by the implacable Inspector from Scotland Yard. From then on, the plot twists and turns as Reginald plans to take his wife's fortune and run off with his mistress. Cath- erine. The Inspector, of course, knows too much,” and is duly shot. But bodies fall and come back to life again as in- trigue upon intrigue is revealed. I,ady Fitzbuttress reappears. Reginald's mistress turns out to be his wife’s cousin after the family inheritance, and the play- ends with a police bust” by none other than Freddy, who master-minded the whole fiendishly clever” plot in the first place. Attendance is taken at all regularly scheduled meetings from September to February. There were 29 such meetings this year. Without question, many of these individuals have given generously of their time in study halls, during Midnight Madnc ss marathon sessions, and other planning sessions. Names indicated below with an asterisk are people whose EXTRA work beyond regular meetings seems to stand out as deserving special recognition. A double asterisk indicates one of our photographers, whose thousands of hours taking and developing pictures would not be in any way countable. Name Hank Number of Meetings Theresa Devlin 1 29 Sue Lawrence 2 26 Renee Miller 3 25 Sandy Major 3 25 Carla Mensink 5 22 Sue Thompson 6 20 Lori Peirce 7 19 Tim Barth 8 16 Flip Huggenvik 9 15 Sharon Wright 9 15 Donna Klockeman 9 15 Jane Kelly 9 15 Michelle Drury 9 15 Tona Ristau 9 15 Sue Duanrud 9 15 Denise VandeWeerd 16 14 Rhonda Rrckkc 17 12 Donna Simonson 18 8 Carolvn Anderson 18 8 No implication of superior work is meant to he implied by the fact that some staff members were in attendance more than others. However, as for the most part the only time that is available to put together the hook is at the set meetings, and because a certain amount of the work of putting together the book is mechanical and time- consuming. it is felt to be important to give some recog- nition to those members of the staff who have given up other things to put in this time.
