The 1974 Bluejays overcame injuries and inexperience to compile a very re- spectable 6-2 record. Although the Jays failed to win their third consecutive conference championship, they did prove themselves to be an excellent football team by outscoring their opponents 176-50. The offensive line consisting of Dave Mensink,Steve Knoepke, Kirk Cor- son, Dave Wahl, Tim Wilbur, Al Larson and Dan Christianson did a fine job opening holes for Charles Aug, Rick Mc- Kenzie, Mike Nehring, Niel Mensink, and Pat Falkner. Tom Larson quarter- backed the offensive unit that averaged 22 points a game. The defense, which held opponents to an average of 6.2 points per game had Jim Snyder, Steve Knoepke, Mark Maust, Gary Johnson and Dave Mensink up front; Dave Wahl, Al Larson and Rick McKenzie as line- backers and Dan Christianson, Neil Men- sink and Charles Aug as deep backs. Individual leaders were Charles Aug who rushed for 1,203 yards in 223 carries and scored 10 touchdowns and 8 Points- after-touchdowns. Offensive back Tom Larson completed 28 of 48 passes for 479 yards and 9 touchdowns. Dave Men- sink lead all receivers with 14 catches for 249 yards and 6 tds. Defensive Captain Rick McKenzie led the team in inter- ceptions with four. McKenzie was also the team's leading tackier followed closely by Steve Knoepke and Al Lar- son. Many of the graduating seniors helped the team win numerous honors over the past 4 years including 2 Maple Leaf con- ference titles, 1 District I Title, One District I Runner-Up title, and One State Runner-Up Title. The Seniors who played for 4 years also helped to build an impressive 32-6 record over that period. The success of the team is a tribute to all of the boys on the squad and the coaches, Mr. Jaszewski and Mr. Irish.
