1975JAYETTE Preston-Fountain High School Preston, Minnesota 55965 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS All the members of the yearbook staff would like to express their personal gratitude and appreciation for all the time and the efforts of Mr. Richard Fraser, professional photographer from Cresco, Iowa, who so generously donated his skills which allowed us to finish this book on time; and to Mr. David Hokenson, yearbook adviser, who sacrificed many hours of his own time to see to it this book got done on time. In ad- dition, a special word of thanks is in order to the numerous people not on the annual staff who so generously sacrificed their time to help put the book together when so many on the staff did not seem to find that time. A very special word of thanks is due to Mr. Garry Post, who drew the cover design used on the 1975 JAYETTE. TABLE OF CONTENTS BODY......... 8 SOUL.........26 MIND.........52 ADS..........74 1 . . .Love, Peace, Laughter- a man has just one lifetime to use as he sees fit. By his own decisions he builds his Character, bit by bit. This lifetime is his only chance to reach a goal and know himself and seek to learn the purpose of his soul. One thing I cannot under- stand is why others, day by day, must judge a man by their own rules and there- by make him pay. What- ever is wrong for you, my friend, may be just right for me. Like darkness for a mushroom and sunshine for a tree. Do not condemn me, fellowman; I'm search- ing, too, you see. The answers that I hope to find will show me how to live. Now Is The And Until We Meet Again AN IRISH BLESSING May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again. May God hold you in the palm of His hand. BODY 9 JAYS Grind to Impressive 6-2 Season FOOTBALL TEAM (Above): 1st Row--M. Spelhaug, manager, J. Schott, G. Huggenvik, B. Miller, M. Lar- son, D. Snyder, B. Barlow, B. McKenzie, J. Slostad, D. Aug. The 1974 Bluejays overcame injuries and inexperience to compile a very re- spectable 6-2 record. Although the Jays failed to win their third consecutive conference championship, they did prove themselves to be an excellent football team by outscoring their opponents 176-50. The offensive line consisting of Dave Mensink,Steve Knoepke, Kirk Cor- son, Dave Wahl, Tim Wilbur, Al Larson and Dan Christianson did a fine job opening holes for Charles Aug, Rick Mc- Kenzie, Mike Nehring, Niel Mensink, and Pat Falkner. Tom Larson quarter- backed the offensive unit that averaged 22 points a game. The defense, which held opponents to an average of 6.2 points per game had Jim Snyder, Steve Knoepke, Mark Maust, Gary Johnson and Dave Mensink up front; Dave Wahl, Al Larson and Rick McKenzie as line- backers and Dan Christianson, Neil Men- sink and Charles Aug as deep backs. Individual leaders were Charles Aug who rushed for 1,203 yards in 223 carries and scored 10 touchdowns and 8 Points- after-touchdowns. Offensive back Tom Larson completed 28 of 48 passes for 479 yards and 9 touchdowns. Dave Men- sink lead all receivers with 14 catches for 249 yards and 6 tds. Defensive Captain Rick McKenzie led the team in inter- ceptions with four. McKenzie was also the team's leading tackier followed closely by Steve Knoepke and Al Lar- son. Many of the graduating seniors helped the team win numerous honors over the past 4 years including 2 Maple Leaf con- ference titles, 1 District I Title, One District I Runner-Up title, and One State Runner-Up Title. The Seniors who played for 4 years also helped to build an impressive 32-6 record over that period. The success of the team is a tribute to all of the boys on the squad and the coaches, Mr. Jaszewski and Mr. Irish. The future of Preston's Basketball teams look bright as the C- Team won the tourneys in Grand Mea- dow and brought home two more troph- ies for Preston. As this year's 7th and 8th Grade teams each brought home great honors, the unpictured 7th Grade team hopes to move on to another victorious year. As a new tradition started last year, our previous Homecoming king and queen, Kelly Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson, returned to crown two of the ten candidates. Janet Hareldson, Junior Class President, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. As Kelly and Nancy walked through the gym of PHS once more, Janet recalled the highlights of our 1973 school year. Tammy McKenzie and Tim Wilbur accompanied the traditional walk of the candidates with Annie's Song, cn piano and guitar. After the candidates were seated, our band played Life is a Song Worth Singing and Mr. Boadwine gave a 'pep' talk. Finally the moment arrived. The band played the school song slowly, as the crowd held their breath, and the candidates stood motionless. King Charlie Aug and Queen Joan Mandelko were chosen. After a week of preparation, the Friday afternoon parade was to take place. Another new change came this year with the building of the candidate float by the Student Council. The ninth and tenth grade stu- dents yelled with satisfaction as their floats were announced competi- tion winners. After a welcomed victory by our Bluejays over the Chatfield Gophers, the music for the dance was provided by The Sunn. THE 1974 QUEEN AND KING (top above): Joan Mandelko and Charles Aug. Cheerleaders: Cis Boom Bah! Preston's cheerleaders began this season by attending the Firebird Cheerleading camp. Using many of the skills and cheers developed there, they zealously showed up for each game to try to motivate the crowd and the team on to another victory. This year many of the cheerleaders had to choose between their love of cheer- leading and going out for the girls' bas- ketball team. This was the last year girls would be able to do both in one season. Beginning in 1975, girls had to choose to participate in one or the other. For the first time, Preston's cheer- leaders also cheered at both girls' and boys' basketball games, in addition to boys' football games. It has been a busy rewarding season. Also this year, a high school help program was incorporated into the SAE tutoring program. Many plans for field trips were initiated for a more stimulating year. Action was the word for this year's Student Council. Once they managed to get on their feet, council members put a beautiful Homecoming together. With this background, they set out to realign the student handbook, and meet stu- dent needs. The Student Council is working for a brighter future for up- coming generations of Preston students. Radio Show members could always be found looking for in- teresting guests to interview for the pro- gram, which was taped at the high school every Friday afternoon at 4:00. Nothing ever seemed to escape the watchful eyes of staffers and their ad- viser, Mr. O'Reilly. Their dedication to broadcast journalism was obvious in the progiam put out for the public every week. Under the direction of Joan Mandelko, editor, Carla Bakalyar, assistant editor, and Mr. O'Reilly, advisor, the Bugle entered its first full year of being professionally printed using an offset process. As last year, the actual printing was done by the Preston Republican. The major drawback of this method of printing for the staff of the Bugle is that each and every article must be typed exactly as it is going to appear in the final copy of the paper. This means hours of laborious typing to fit articles into neat-looking columns, which then have to be pasted-up page by page. The services of the photographic staff were also now divided between the annual and the Bugle as the new process also al- lowed the inclusion of pictures. Ambitious Bugle reporters could be found any place in the school catching the latest gossip and news from every corner of the school. We're FHAers Happy Are We The F.H.A., which was composed of fifty girls, had a very successful year under the leadership of Miss Ericson and President Mary Bunge. The elderly impact group was very busy and had many projects. Some of the projects included go- ing over to the nursing home with cards at Thanksgiving and taking cookies to the patients at Christmas. The Children's group was also active with a Valentine Party for the Day Care students, and a May Day Party, which the children enjoyed greatly. Other projects were sending two delegates to the state meeting, and attending the district meeting. To raise money, the FHA sold bars every Thursday after school, and they held a bake sale and an egg sale. As a reward for the girls' hard work, they took a trip to the House on the Rock in Wisconsin. The Mother-Daughter Tea was held at the Branding Iron in Preston this year, and was a very enjoyable evening. F.H.A. (Above): 1st Row--S. Hansen, T. McKenzie, S. Yaste, D. Dor- nink, 2nd Row-S. Ovations Abound for Jackie Strains of 'The Sweetest Girl in Town , and Since I First Met You , were among the songs that drifted through the halls of PHS for several weeks as the students prepared for the Junior Class Play, Jackie . The smart opening chorus set the pace for the play from the minute the cur- tain opened. The audience was entranced with the entire production. The play itself was set in a luxurious hotel lobby. The guests of the hotel were set for romance. Harry Hart and Jackie Sweet found they were set for trouble when Mrs. Hart realized her son was about to marry a manicurist. She de- mands he marry someone on his own Social Plain , so Harry and Jackie work up a plan to foil his parents. Jackie comes back to the hotel disguised as Harry's pal. Jack Stewart. All seems to be going fine until the real Jack Stewart arrives and confusion reigns until all is settled. The play was backed by a fantastic band and chorus who put in many hours of rehearsal and trouble along with the cast. All in all, Jackie proved to rank among the best plays ever presented at PHS. Jim likes Laura and wants to help her, but ends up with Laura turning even more to her Glass Menagerie and her brother Tom leaving home like his father to forget the family, but can't. The play was presented to the public and at the Sub-District One Act Contest and receiving two A's and an A- , being placed as alternate to Hamony's Green Eggs and Ham and Chatfield's The Zoo Story . Beyond any question, this has been one of the busiest years ever for the Preston High School Band. Throughout the year, many fund-raising projects were develop- ed with the eventual hope of raising enough money to go to the international band competition in Winnipeg this June. It was not at all unusual to see band students at bake sales selling their wares, collecting newspapers to sell in Rochest- er, conducting raffles at Girls' Volley- ball games, selling pies at concerts, col- lecting donations at various community locations, or using the talents of their parents in bringing about their need. Even with all of this attention focussed on fund-raising, the basic purpose of the instrumental music department was never forgotten. In the struggles of day to day lessons, and the thrice- weekly band meetings, the Preston- Fountain Band continued to excell in developing good concert sound. A trend away from the marches which have dominated in the past and into more difficult music was clearly evi- dent in the band's work. Ever Present on the more contemporary music scene was the Stage Band. In their weekly Monday meetings, they sought to give Preston's music students a different avenue to channel their numerous talents. Their efforts were al- ways greatly appreciated at band con- certs. Never could the Cadet Band be forgot- ten either, for it is the training ground in the junior high for the musicians who will make up the band in the future. Some cadet members also were in- volved in the fund-raising efforts, as they miqht also be included in the trip to Winnipeg in June. While not always the peak of musical perfection, the junior high band concerts were always well received and very enjoyable. 42 SENIOR HIGH FLAG GIRLS (Above): Mary Shanahan, Denise Dornink, Kathy Miller, Jackie Damme, Diane Simonson. This year the choir again sought to main- tain their reputation of excellence in vocal music under the direction of Mr. Les Brelsford. Nearly 80 students melded their voices in resonant har- mony every Monday and Wednesday during sixth hour. In addition, many had vocal lessons during the week, and it was all in preparation for the final opportunities to perform in public at concert time. A wide variety of musical numbers was attempted this year, in- cluding many more modern pieces than have been sung in the recent past. The newest vocal group on the scene at PHS was the Pop Singers, an extra- curricular group who have been chosen to develop their voices in particularly modern sounds. Their musical variety was an especially wfelcome addition to the family of musical groups at vocal concerts. Madrigal as usual was extremely busy all year long. Three mornings a week, dreary-eyed members met at 8 to har- monize the repertoire of songs which have come to mean Madrigal at PHS. The highlight of the year for Preston students and other fans of the Madrigal singers was the very traditional Christ- mas Concert, which was given on De- cember 7, a Saturday night for the first time ever. The setting was noticeably elaborate for the occasion and the fes- tivities were marked by the appearance of the queen for the first time. In ad- dition numerous tours to churches and other organizations around the area filled many weekends and evenings. Again this year Preston was represented at the Dorian Festival in Decorah, Iowa. Six students from Preston went to the Festival, and three were active partici- pants in the mass choir event which is the highlight of the Festival. In just one day, participants rehearse and prepare for the concert to be given in the even- ing.
