Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1973 volume:

IN DEDICATION TO JERRY O’CONNOR The blow was hard, The shock severe; We never thought death was so near. Only those who have, dost can tell, the pain of parting without farewell You are not forgotten, Jerry nor will you ever be, as long as life and memory last; We will remember thee. We miss you now; our hearts are sore, As time goes on, we miss you more. Your loving smile, your gentle face; No one else can fill your place. We drew a larger circle that took him in. A hushed audience and soft lit stage awaited the Homecoming candi- dates’ parade down the aisle. Thump- ing hearts anxiously awaited the crowning of the queen. Patty Krogs- tad was chosen Preston’s 1972 Homecoming queen by the student body. Her court included Pat Fitz- gerald, Charlene Tienter, Barb Wil- son, and Carol Runningen. Mike Fitzgerald acted as Master of Cere- monies. A pep talk was given by Jo- seph Falkner. King Kiel’s court in- cluded Paul Slostad, Scott Snyder, Jerry Hampel, and Andy Bunge. Lisa Case and Brian Hovelson were flower girl and crown bearer. The festive moment ended with a bonfire provided by the sophomore class. Ev- eryone joined the cheerleaders for a lively pep fest. Below: King Kiel places the royal crown on our new queen. Traditional Homecoming Friday opened with a parade led by the band following the royalty and the floats. Se- niors won first place with “Gophers and Loafers” and the Junior float, “Swamp ’Em”, received honorable mention in the Senior High division. “M A S H ’Em” won honors for the Freshman float in the Junior High Division. The Blue Wave came on with lots of punch to wipe Chatfield 20-0. The un- lucky Gophers were never given a chance. At this time both teams were tied in the conference. This game proved that Preston’s Bluejays had strong potential for the remainder of the season. Patti, Kiel, Lisa, and Brian enjoy their ma- jestic ride in the parade. 22 SPIRIT SPARKS VICTORY Top: Big Jays beginning an advancing drive against Chatfield. The impending fore- closure of Candy’s farm threatens the financial security of Candy and her aunts. Patience and Charity. However, two rock promoters. Zip- pity and Adam, offer a payment of S50,000 as a means to their salvation if they will let them hold a rock festi- val on their farm. The play comes to grips with the many unforeseen diffi- culties encountered in staging a rock festival. A happy note was struck at the conclusion of the play when Candy’s farm was saved by the gen- erous contributions of the festival goers. The dramatic atmosphere pulsated with the electrifying music of the rock combo. The cooperation of the various committees and the cast, the largest in Preston’s history, contrib- uted to the total success of the play. SPORTS PRESTON GOES TO STATE The 1972 Bluejay football team completed the best season in the his- tory of P.H.S. The Blucjays, with a record of 11-1, swept Maple Leaf honors, the District I title and were State Bunners-Up to Gaylord in the state playoffs. The Jays were a very unified team and had no individual leaders. Everyone worked for the good of the team. Kelly Fitzgerald, Scott Hellickson, and Creg Hoff had plenty of running room thanks to the offensive line of Bill O’Connor, Scott Snyder, Paul Slostad, Steve Man- delko, and Steve Knoepke. Mike Fitzgerald was able to open up a complimentary passing attack with Kiel Anderson, Ben Sikkink, Kelly Fitzgerald, and Jerry Hampel manuevering their way to the ball. Defensively, Gary Johnson, Bill O’Connor, Lynn Glaser, Ben Sik- kink, and Craig Mensink stopped the runs and the defensive hackfield (of) Bob House, Scott Snyder, Paul Slos- tad, Kiel Anderson, Kelly Fitzgerald, and Jerry Hampel watched for the pass. The defense allowed below 10 points a game and not a single touch- down was scored in the air. Leading the Bluejays to championship heights were Coaches Frank Jaszewski and Dick Irish. They spent many hours in preparation for the upcoming games. The credit for such a fine sea- son must go to these two coaches who inspired the team with determi- nation, pride, and taught them to ac- cept defeat as well as victory. The students of P.H.S. also wish to thank the Lions Club for purchasing the new scoreboard and to those who do- nated their time and efforts to the building of the press box. Preston’s Cross Country team, the Harriers, had a fine season this year. The team, with the help of Paul Zim- merman, had an overall season of placing first in six out of ten meets. There were ten boys out for Cross Country and they all proved to be as- sets to the team. Andy Bunge, Brian Hoff, and Jim Snyder proved to he the team’s inspired leaders when they took top honors at the District One Track Meet. We want to con- gratulate the Cross Country team on a job well done and a fine season. -T Cross Country Team Row I: J. Ostrcm, E. Halasey, D. Duxbury, D. Solberg, M. Callanan Row 2: J. Snyder, A. Compiling a 13 and 1 record in conference play, the Bluejays went from the Maple Leaf Confer- ence Championship to the title of District One Cham- pions. Kiel Anderson, the teams leading scorer, had another impressive season with the excellent help of Mike Fitzgerald, Greg Hoff, Jerry Hampel, and Kelly Fitzgerald. A great amount of credit can also go to the rest of the team who helj d out in tense moments dur- ing the games. The extensive training program and ef- forts of the fine coaching staff of Ken Denny and Dick Irish really paid off in the end result. Going into Regional tournament play the Bluejays have chalked up a record of 22 and 2. It was a year that Preston fans would not soon forget. A Team-Row 1: S. Bcstor, C. Hoff, R. Crooters, Denny. Al- though they won no meets, their spirit never died. Coach O’Hara felt that much of this spirit was due to the fine leadership of 3 seniors. Many juniors went out, and gained a lot of experience so next year could be quite promising. The B Team, al- though they didn't go undefeated, can be credited with many fine and individual performances ending the season with a 4-8 record. BTeam-Coach Roderick; J. Slostad, J. Hamman. Right: Greg lloff hoists symbol of victory as the Jays ad- vance to State. The Bluej’ays, after collecting the District I trophy, were ready for more action. Their first regional game was with Goodhue, a good shooting, running team, but the Jays put together a fine game and moved a step closer to the state playoffs. Kasson—Manterville was the Blue- j'ays’ next victim. K-M was a strong team, but the Jays put together an impressive first quarter and held off a late rally by the Ko-Mets to win a berth in the state tournaments. In the first game, the Jays ran into the pre-toumey favorite, Melrose, and were simply outplayed. But, the Jays picked themselves up the next morn- ing and defeated their archrivals from Gaylord. The last game, in which the Jays set a new tournament record by coming from a 26 point deficit, defeating a very tall Windom by 8 points to claim the State Con- solation Title. We congratulate a team that will be remembered in the years to come. Signs of hasty additions to keep up with the Jays’ latest triumph. p 'W It Took 44 Years, . . . Jays Have A Good Season Baseball had its ups and downs this season, but the team fought until the end to win. The Jays started out well but ran into trouble with several low-rate teams. When it came down to it though, they beat Chatfield and previously undefeated Harmony to share the title. The season was high- lighted by a stupendous triple plav against Winona Cotter—Bob House to Paul Slostad to Kelly Fitzgerald and back to Paul. The Bluejays de- feated Wykoff and Grand Meadow before falling to Rushford. Con- gratulations to the team for an over- all fine year. Get him, Kiel! Row 1: B. Major, M. Larson, B. Miller, D.
