All of the dedicated people you see here worked for a year of smooth operations. Going into the main office you would find the secretar- ies hard at work. Mr. Scanlan and Mr. Slostad were busy working at the affairs of the day while Mr. Soren- son seemed to constantly have either parents or stu- dents in his office planning for the students many fu- ture years. The cooking staff and the custodians were constantly on the move. The cooks planned nutritious meals for the two shifts of hungry students and faculty. Mean- while, the custodians kept the entire building clean and serviceable. The school board once again did a fine job of guiding the faculty and influencing the entire administration. We were all proud to have these people on our school board. 10 MR ELMER SLOSTAD-B.A. St Olaf College, M.A. University of Minnesota; Superintendent DONALD SCANLAN-M.A. University of Minnesota; B.S. Mankato State College; Spanish 11 12; Spanish Club Advisor English, History, and Language This year in the many history classes of PHS the students learned the importance of our heritage and how it has affected us today. The teachers let the stu- dents discuss many different top- ics pertaining to our government, geography, economics, and the situations of all the countries in the world. Our English departments not only taught us grammar and spelling, but also let us put what we learned into good practice by hav- ing us write short stories and opinions on many different topics. One of the important things that all the students learned this year is how to communicate with our fellow man. Learning these things will certainly help us as we go out into the business world to find jobs and to get along with others. The library was used very much again this year as students could come in during the study halls and look up research materials for schoolwork. Often the library was closed to the study hall group in order to allow a classroom to come in for the entire hour. In this way the class would prepare for oral reports. Also included in the Lan- guage Arts Department was the Spanish class taught by Mrs. Up- ton. Everyone taking this class will agree it has been a wonderful year. Right? Si I 13 Above: Mrs. Critz gives students a reassuring smile. Above Right: Mr. Denny relaxes for a big game. Right: Mr. Boadwine does his homework. M Mathematics and Science The mathematics department of PHS triggers calculated desires to achieve. Courses in elementary al- gebra and geometry were fol- lowed bv advanced math and anal- ysis. The freshmen were introduced to algebra, while the sophomores struggle with post- ulates and theorems and relating them to proofs. Higher algebra is a combination of all your algebra and geometry knowledge. Analy- sis is the most advanced and few- est membered class. Striving forward in the complex work of today, Preston’s science department keeps the pace. Chemistry class learned the iden- tification of the elements and the problems of molar volume, mo- lecular weights and formulas. Physics class proves their knowl- edge of the sciences through ex- periments. Biology students study many things from botany, the cell, human anatomy, physiology and zoology. The math and science department is an important part of the cur- riculum at PHS. It is widely learned to remain attuned with the many achievements of today. AUDREY CRITZ-B.S. Business and The Arts The manual arts and agriculture classes pursued their way through another year of preparing stu- dents for industrial-arts careers. The home economics classes ex- perimented in the arts of food preparation, sewing, family rela- tionships, and many other things during the year. Interested students became skilled in business methods and office practices. The Preston music department added many musical enjoyments with their numerous perform- ances throughout the year. The art department offered many new and exciting creations and ideas with the help of their new teacher, Mr. Post. Many of their projects were on display in the lunchroom during the year. Successful completion of driver’s training course enabled soph- omores to obtain their driver’s licenses. This is their foremost job. Selling the Home- coming buttons and decorating for Co- ronation are their main accom- plishments. Equally important is that they represent the student body in ex- pressing views on the different topics that may come up. They also serve as guides to lost parents on Parent- Teacher conferences. The officers of each class work with their class to promote a successful year of activities. Below: 8th grade officers; Janet Krogstad, Marie Larson, Brian Hoff, Virginia Kul- srud. Selection . . . Tears Five lovely senior girls, all equally deserving of the title, and only one could be chosen. Miss LewEllen Klein reigned as the 1971 Homecoming Queen. Charming and gay she wore the crown well as tears of joy and surprise glistened on her glowing cheeks. Having been here only two years she has found many new friends and has participated in many school activities. Her senior year was highlighted by her bestowed title of Home- coming Queen. Following the coronation, the cheerleaders led the student body in a pep fest. It was held by the bonfire which was built by the sophomore class. The band also helped with the cheer- ing and supplied music for the school song. The atmosphere was total excitement. Left: Are you scared?” Heck no!!” Lower left: Paul and Missy get acquainted with the five queen candidates. Right: What?!? Are you sure!” Lower right: You should have seen him at rehearsal!!” Homecoming Highlighted by Win Over Burros Coronation was the most jubilant event but there were more undertakings involved. A week of zoom- ing around led to the parade on Friday, October 15, as the floats were completed before the deadlines. Time and hard work payed off for the seniors and freshmen who won in the float divisions. The parade was led by the senior high band, followed by the jun- ior band. Our royalty and the floats were preceded by the Fountain band. The festivities ended that evening as the mighty Bluejays tallied a victory over the undefeated Burros. The Sunshower provided the music for the Homecoming Dance. Another year of Homecoming activities came to an end and like the others it will not be forgotten for a long time. Seniors win with Hey! We’re Gonna Win.” 40 Left: Freshmen win with Defeat 'Em. Right LewEllen and LeRoy wave to the fans. Left to Right: N. Wahl, R. Hellickson, J. King L. Rindels, D. Finseth, G. Hahn, R. Where are my gloves? It’s too hot to march! My legs are tired. That’s an awful steep hill!! Watch out for my hat! Have you seen my music anywhere?” Despite these seeming objec- tions, the Preston band marched staunchly on to new and different experiences. Take for instance, the Miss Rose- mount Parade and preforming at halftime for Homecoming. Also entertaining for all the home football and basketball games. Under their director, Mr. Spillum, the band had a ful- filling year. Various band members participated in district and regional contests which band, soloist, and ensembles took part in. The band also sold calendars again this year to promote their band trip. Summer was kept busy with Friday night concerts and the parades in the area. The band elected new officers this year. They are as follows: Senior Norman Wahl, Junior Scott Snyder, Sophomore Rita Munns, and Freshman John Luehr. The Junior Band sought themselves. All of the members worked hard to bring perfection to their individual parts. All of their efforts were combined to reach precision in performance. Senior Band-Row 1: K. Lindorff, K. Munns, K. Many new members joined the ranks of the Senior High Chorus this year under the direction of Mr. Brelsford. The choir worked on many difficult pieces and gave a good example of these at the various concerts they presented throughout the year. The Madrigal and the Men’s Choir were newr addi- tions to the music department this year. The Madri- gal added much to the Christmas concert and also went caroling. Such common idioms as this could be heard by the Spanish students as they greeted one another in the halls. The highlight for the Span- ish Club members was the annual Christmas Party with tacos, a pi- fiata, and canciones.” On Friday, December 17, the senior Spanish students serenaded the student body with Christmas carols. Los Estudiantes de Espaftol” also sponsored a Spanish Dance. The Preston girls promoted active competition in G.R.A. this year. On Monday evenings, twice a month, the senior G.R.A. enjoyed numerous sports. The junior G.R.A. held their meetings Tuesdays after school in the spring and fall. The girls chal- lenged different schools in vol- leyball, basketball, and track. An award system was set up for at- tendance and competition so the girls worked especially hard to gain merits. This year the debate team de- bated the very controversial sub- ject of the court system. They spent many hours researching and debating this subject. The debate squad gained experience in public speaking by travelling to several tournaments and competing. C5 Spanish Club-Row 1: Mrs. Upton, Adv., K. Anderson, M. Rodenz, K. Lindorff, P. Under their advisor, Miss Ericson, the girls showed off their outdoor cooking abilities at Hidden Valley. Their cookie talents were expressed in making goodies which were sent to local servicemen. The F.H.A. was also represented at the district and state meetings where many experiences were found. The an- nual Can Dance and Valentine Dance were successful. A pizza supper was a new undertaking for the year. Ending the prosperous year was the Mother-Daughter Tea and the installation of the new officers. 48 F.H.A. Officers: R. Bradt, B. Kloekeman, K. FTA gives the student the opportunity to find out whether or not he would like to be a teacher, requirements a teacher must meet, and all the work teachers must do. Some of the senior FTA members have taught down at the grade school. Our other members have attended many FTA conventions. The FTA also sells candy on Mon- day nights. The money that they make from this project will be used for a hundred dollar scholar- ship for one of the deserving FTA seniors. FTA; Row 1: S. Barth, S. O’Connor, W. Wolf, M. Grebin, C. Himli, M. Future Farmers of America The Agriculture 9 class receives a rather thorough unit in how to conduct a business meeting using different parliamentary moves. The freshmen practice parliamen- tary procedure by actually partici- pating in simulated meetings us- ing various kinds of praliamentary motions. In our chapter the ten elected of- ficers are the chapter’s parliamen- tary team. They practice using many parliamentary moves on various subjects. Their practice culminates in the district and re- gional contests held in the month of March. In addition proper parliamentary procedure is used at our regular monthly chapter meetings giving the members an opportunity to use what they have learned. Each year the District FFA holds an FFA creed contest for the Ag- riculture 9 students. The District FFA also has an extemporaneous speech and a prepared speech con- test each year. These activities are additional ways by which the individuals can improve his self confidence. The other judging contests such as dairy cattle, general livestock, and mechanics also aid the stu- dent for they must make certain decisions in doing their judging. In fact, at certain of these con- tests they must give oral reasons as to why they made certain judgements. FFA Officers: Mr. Titrud, advisor, R. Lar- Snyder. S. Grant, B. Sikkink, L. Grabau, D. son. It was entitled Deadwood Dick.” The setting is in Calamity Jane’s mantrap saloon of Deadwood Gulch. It takes place during the Gold Rush Days in the Black Hills. With the melodrama came the villain, heroines, and the heroes. They acted to the accompianment of the piano. The audience became a part of the action as the stage was extened into the audience by a ramp, around which sat the Western Singers who were the entertainers between scenes. Of course, there were also the Cowboys, indians, sheriff, and the other characters of a Western Melodrama. The melodrama was new to Preston and the large crowd made it an evening of excitement and enjoyment. 52 Ned Harris....... Wild Bill Hickok. Lily Blossom..... Rose Blossom..... Jayette and Bluejay Bugle Many long frustrating hours of hard work were put in this year by the members of the Jayette” staff. Most of this work took place in room 203, where the original meeting was held last September to start selling ads. From that meeting until March, staff mem- bers wrote copy, planned and drew layouts, and cropped pic- tures until final pages were fin- ished. The staff worked hard to cover the different activities scheduled at P.H.S. They also re- ceived much help from their advi- sor, Miss Hanson, and Mr. Zim- merman who put in many hours with the photography. Again this fall, members of both the Jayette and Bluejay Bugle at- tended a workshop in Minneapolis. Under the direction of co-editors, Roseamm Bradt and Pam Jensen, the Bluejay Bugle has improved considerably. Of course, some of the success is due to the guidance of Mr. O’Reilly. The newspaper has had many new and amusing additions. Every copy was sold fast because everyone was read- ing those zany senior interviews. The sports sections were also in- teresting write-ups. Miss Hanson also became their new advisor. Gymnastics has become a creative form of ex- ercise that, besides being fun, improves body discipline, figure control, performance and per- sonal grooming. About 15 girls make up the Gymnastics Club which meets twice a week after school during the fall. The season ends with a district meet. The girls work at the 4 Olympic events: balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise and vaulting. They complete their work with demonstrations at half-time of basketball games. 5 Athletics 61 Varsity Jays Chalk Up 6-2 Record The PHS gridders, coached by Frank Jaszewski and Dick Irish, compiled a fine 6-2 record during the 1971 season. The team started off on a winning note by defeating Spring Grove 24-0 in a non-conference game. They dropped the conference opener to Grand Meadow but came right back with two shut- outs against Wykoff and Spring Valley. In the next game the Jays suffered what was to be their last loss of the season to Chatfield by a score of 12-8. The highlight of the season was the Homecoming game against Lanesboro. Our gridders showed their potential in a tight game as they gave Lanesboro their only conference loss. When a team has desire there is no stopping them and our team had the desire and scored a 14-12 victory over the Burros. The Jays went on to finish the season with wins over Leroy and Harmony by a score of 12-10 and 28-10 respectively. All PHS fans should get ready for next season because the Jays will be. Row . Mgr. Junior Kiel Anderson again this year led the team with a 24.4 av- erage and was also named leading scorer in Southeastern Minnesota. Mike Fitzgerald also a junior was the leader in rebounding, ending regular season play with a 12.8 av- erage. Finishing otf the first 5 are juniors Jem- Hampel, Greg Hoff, and senior Norm Wahl. The highlight of the season was the title game with Harmony. Both teams were undefeated in league play.
