JAYS HAVE WINNING YEAR The Bluejay basketball team of 1962-63 finished with a 10-8 record. The Jays proved to be a streaky” team, playing good basketball for a few weeks and then showing poorly for a time . The highlight of the season was a 60-58 victory over Harmony in the last conference game. After being mentally up for the Harmony game, the Jays went into the first tournament game flat and were eliminated in the first round. The Bluejays lose eight seniors from the A team and are counting on a good 1962-63 B team to fill the gaps next year . The 1962-63 B Team had a very successful season. Many of the underclassmen of the team gained invaluable game experience which will help them in future years . This year's B squad members are looking forward to a just as successful season on the A Team next year. ROW 1: T. Bestor, M. Conlan, D. Gartner, J. Amdahl, R. Halweg, R. Haugstad. WRESTLERS GAIN EXPERIENCE This year the Preston wrestling team competed under the direction of a new coach, Mr. Aim. Again we are losing top wrestlers from the senior class. But, with the rapid development of underclassmen, this year, the team should continue to improve in the future. Seniors, Bob Ellinger and Terry Ekholm, were the co-captains of the 1963 team. Senior Matmen Terry Ekholm Rick Thatcher Bob Ellinger I'm wonderful!! Huh?? Echh!! That greasy kid's stuff! Blue Jays First Golf Team For the first time in the school's history, Preston, in 1962, participated in the district golf meet. Jerry Rislove and Mike Knies qualified in district play to compete in the regional golf meet which was held in Rochester. Putting practice??? Bobby, working for a reversal. CINDERMEN REBUILD ROW 1: S. Hall, S. Arnold, T. Gross, S. Tessem, R. Pugh. ROW 2: Mr. McCuaig, coach, T. Ekholm, R. Amdahl, N. Broadwater, W. Marzolf, R. Drier, R. Lichty, A. Narveson, E. Sethre, R. Schultz, R. Pickett. Good Form! Suffering the loss of eight members from graduation, the 1962 track team was hampered by lack of experienced personnel in all but one or two events. Throughout the 1962 season high point men were Terry Ekholm and Ronald Dreier. At the Conference Meet, Preston took 5th with the Sprint Medley Team finishing 2nd. Having suffered through a building year the thinclads are confident of attaining greater success in the immediate future. JAYS GO WINLESS Final Statistics °°f R. Ginny Shanahan, Rosanne Foss, Cindy Gunderson Yaa Team! ! 'We Did It! ! A Tense Moment 15 BIG Ones BAND WINS NEW HONORS During the last days of May, one could hear a gentle voice from the west parking lot saying, All right you people; get in step. This signaled the beginning of the summer program for the Preston Bluejacket Band. Their first public appearance was at the District Dairy Days at Chatfield, where the band placed first. From there the band was invited to participate at the Regional Dairy Days at Lake City. Having acquired a trophy for its efforts at Chatfield, the band went on to win third place at the State V.F .W. Parade at Austin, and first place in the 40 8 division of the Winona Steamboat Days. Fall came! So did football! And so did the Bluejacket Band. Their entertaining halftime activities at home games and their appearance at the homecoming parade added zest and color to the football season. The marching season was brought to a successful conclusion when the band proudly brought home a first place trophy from the Mankato State Homecoming Parade. These were the Christmas Concert on December 23, and the Mid-Winter Concert on February 13, and the Spring Concert which was on May 10. Two new groups were formed by Mr. Jor-dahl during the year. The Girls' Glee was made up of girls from grades nine through twelve. They performed at all the concerts this year. The other new group was the Boys' Sextet consisting of six Senior High Chorus members. This group made its first public appearance at the annual athletic banquet. 40 ROW 1: H Krause, J. Kimber, M. To help the chorus prepare for the large group contest, Mr. Sid Suddendorf, this year's district all state chorus director, sat in on a practice during February. His constructive criticism helped greatly in preparation for the contest. 41 Lining up ROW 1: J. Schultz, D. Ostem, J. Corson, P. Gartner, C. Sikkink, S. Bremseth, L. Dreier, J. VanderWoude, B. While there are still many areas which can be improved upon, the staff feels that this book has made some significant advances over previous editions. The first use of color photography and the increased size of the book are two of the improvements made this year. As in the past, we have tried to inject humor into the annual where it is appropriate as is evidenced by this page. We, the staff and our advisor, sincerely hope the 1963 Jayette meets with your approval. Friendly reaction to annual prices. 48 Low-pressure salesmanship. Assembly staff K. Grove, T. Gross, H.
