It is a modern comedy of a family that were overly mothered. It was very capably given under the direction of Miss Buckman. On February 29 a group of students accompanied by Miss Buckman presented a play 'The Scientist Spallanzaniv over station KWNO in Winona. This play was one in a series put on by schools surrounding Winona. The Cast was as follows: Announcer-Elaine Gleason Narrator .,.......... .... V ictor Arnold Signora Laura Bassi .,...... Patricia Siniff Several students went out for declamatory work this year, and Preston had the dis- tinction of having a representative in each division at the regional contest held in Chatfield, March 11. Under the new system the contest consisted of the following divisions: learned oratory, original oratory, interpretative reading, and extemporaneous speaking. Elaine Glea- son, Shirley Ibach, Marian Jones, Alicia Neuman. Gwendolyn Perry, Myrtle Nelson, Vivian Kruegel and Alice Gossman took part in interpretative readingg Elaine placing first and Shirley second. In original oratory Lois Prinson, Gayle Tammel, Fanchon Hartwig, Lauraine Thomson and Arlene Michener took part, Lois winning first place and Gayle and Lauraine tying for second. Russell Hahn, Victor Arnold and Mary Frances Dean competed in the learned oratory division, Russell placing first. In the division of extemporaneous speaking Elaine Gleason, Maxine Berning, Phyllis Berning, Marian Jones and Shirley Ibach com- peted, Elaine placing first and Maxine second. Since it is impossible for one contestant to compete in two divisions Elaine chose the extemporaneous division. At the district contest held at Preston, March 6, all our representatives received very good ratings which entitled them to go to the regional. Here they also did credit to our school, all receiving good ratings except Elaine who received a very good rating.
