)edication - Mr. James Stephenson Call her “Chewing Gum” cause she’s Wrigely all over! is one of the many jokes that Mr. James Stephenson displays daily on his blackboard. Mr. Stephenson is well known for his sense of humor and his ability to communicate well with his students. He makes it a point to wear a black tie whenever he gives a test. “I like to mourn with them,” he explains. Mr. Stephenson has been honored many times. He was named Az. Teacher of the year in 1957. He was State President of the Az. Teachers Association and chairman of the science dept, of Prescott High. He is also involved in many activities. He is soloist in the choir at his church, the United Methodist. He collects stamps as a hobby. He also says that teaching is his favorite pastime. Mr. Stephenson has taught at PHS for 32 years. He’s lived in Prescott for 32 years, Arizona 36 years. He teaches Anatomy and Physiology. “The student has to have a one or a two in order to get into my class. This is my policy which the school follows,” he says. Mr. Stephenson went to college at North Western Miss. State University and many others. He started teaching in 1938. He’s been teaching for 41 years. Mr. Stephenson has two children, a girl and a boy. He also has four grandchildren. 78-79 is Mr. Stephenson’s last year at PHS. “I’m retiring at my own choice. I want to do some traveling with my wife,” he explains. Good Luck in your future Mr. Stephenson. We’ll Miss Ya! Through hassles with staying at school late, and cramming at deadline time, we managed to add 8 pages of color, a spring supplement, and change the sections and pictures for the better. The boys had to get used to a new coach and a new system of coaching. There were many close games that could have turned the season around. We had a good first half of the season, and won the first two games of league play. 1 was disappointed we didn’t win more games, but I wasn’t disappointed in the season. We had an overall good team. Inconsistency was the main problem. I hope that we established the type of game that we want to play, and we’ll be able to do better next year.” Leading Scorer-Cling Ferra Leading Rebounder-Don Herring Leader in Assists-Chris Ott Leader in Percentage From the Fioor-Andy Williams Leader in Percentage From the Free-Throw Line-Clint Ferra The 1978-79 Season Mr. Tom Bunger said of the 1978-79 Junior Varsity Basketball season, “We started off slowly. We had some sickness and some unfortunate suspensions that caused us to be rough and rocky, losing nine games in a row. We finally found a half court trap that worked well on defense. This team can fast break better than any team I’ve had. We got outstanding guard play from Jeff Newman, Mike Sventek, and Mark Larriba, who probably broke all the J.V. assist records. We also got outstanding inside play from Kenny Jones, Robert Barton, Anthony Sieh, and John Groff. Gino Fornara, Cody Brooks, Pete Bertenshaw. Henry Frias, David Fenwick, Sean Nelson, Tom Swanson, and Scott Boone were a huge asset off the bench. Leading Rebounder-Kenny Jones Leading Scorer-Kenny Jones Leader in Assists-Mark Larriba P.H.S.
