As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too, have their story. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection, neither be cynical about love; Take kindly the counsel of the years gracefully surrendering the things of youth. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God. Whatever you conceive Him to be and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Youth is a form of thieving. Therein lies all the magic of life. Nothing passes entirely away, but is simply a transition. Be wiser then. Don't fall for envy. Feel sorry for the lucky thieves. However much the play the devil, they'll end by being robbed themselves. Other times will come. Other times will rise. Ytv eny Yevtushenko 47 You shall above all things be glad and young. For if you're young, whatever life you wear it will become you; and if you are glad whatever's living will yourself become. for that way knowledge lies, the foetal grave called progress, and negation's dead undoom. I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance. e.e. cummings 48 My life, you take off without me. You roll while I'm still waiting to take a step. You carry the battle somewhere else. You leave me alone like this. I've never followed you. I don't see too clearly what you offer. The little I want, you never bring. Because of this lack, my ideals go way up To all sorts of things, to infinity almost . . . because of this little that's lacking that you never bring. Henri Michaux You have attained adulthood in your own specific, but not special, way. Always a part, but never a whole. A fool's melodrama. (I know) a fate worse than claustrophobia. Never an opening, but always a gap. Young, and well off and hidden and inside and pushing. Your game makes me weary (Mine too) Be a mother (But God) don't treat me like a son. Wash your clothes in a little room. I'm sweet sixteen and never been kissed. I'm here to laugh, and make you laugh, in extreme quiet, to listen. 50 Love is maturity, you say? Is that so? Straining, I wait. You come. Glances meetl No shudder even! Instead, repose . . . ready to howl, I run. Fingers touchl No explosion even! Instead repose . . . I run, ready to howl. Is that all between you and me? Are ashes the maturity of fire then? Is love's maturity no more than affinity, and that only in the best of cases? Who's playing the monster over us, wicked and leering? Who, with cold efficacy, dared fabricate a false definition? Love has its birth and death. Love has no Maturity. Love roars, stoking the menace of extinction for us, and it breathes not with equanimity, but huskily gaspsâ begging for mercy and no mercyâ as the stifling earth gasps, abandoned by reason, half smothered by the world's creation . . . 51 Yevgeny Yevtushenko â i. Caught in the act again, 'Man Mountain' personifies another slightly more famous journalist. Dwight Bennett teaches students how to relate to his fellow human (and cacti). You may enjoy it ânow, but just wait! , Faye Ohler gleefully remarks in Home Economics. Josephine McCreary is smiling because the girl is smiling. Both enjoy Home Economics. 206 Pat Preston, head librarian, gives her once-in-a-while- smile. Without the school secretaries, school would stop functioning completely. These ladies are Pat Hedgpeth, Marion Shultz, June Tramel, Jane Underwood, Charlotte Gittings, Doris Shellhorn, and Isabelle Fowler. Now let me see. One plus one is two. Or is it three? , wonders Mrs. Lita George, without whom the school bookstore would flounder. Ruth Dickerson, school nurse, looks a little pale herself after a hard day of nursing the hypo- chondriacs of PHS. 208 Without bus drivers, many students would not make it to PHS. They are Willis Baur, Bill Griffith, Frank Read, P. Norman Carlson, Gordon Larson, Charles Stewart; (Front): Walter Ryer, Jim Sleeper, Bruce Fee, Orval Peder- son, and Edgar Guenther. Ann Migmerey, kitchen. Janitors are Doc Contrail, David Bottazzi, Rocky Gabaldon, Rudy Silva, Steve Molner, and Denneth McDevitt, as seen from left to right. 209 BEST WISHES ...
