It was here in the present school, built in 1914 and expanded in 1931 because of the increased enroll- ment, that this class and the classes before have spent many hours. To really appreciate the school one must go back to early pioneer days when the educational system of the Prescott district con- sisted of but a small one-room log cabin on the banks of Granite Creek. There the grandparents of these seniors Went to school and learned the three R's-readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic. Through the years, as the need arose, larger and better equipped schools were built until the present building was constructed. Now, however, this building cannot accommodate the combined enrollment of the junior and senior high schools, so another step must be taken. Consequently, in the fall of next year the senior high will move into a new educational institution which Will afford more and better facili- ties for the mental and physical ,development of the students. With these parting Words this annual is dedicated to the present high school building from which the class of '39 will be the last of 26 classes to graduate. FOYCWOTCJ In the 1939 Hassayamper an attempt has been made to record events that will be memorable in the minds of every student of Prescott High School. It Was the aim to make this book of ever-increasing value as the years pass by. Special emphasis has been made by devoting one section to the recording of the outstanding activities of the year. In this yearbook, the same as in any other book of its kind. certain activities and contests cannot be carried in their entirety because the printing must be done prior to their completion. Life is given to the book through the use of color which is an innovation in the annuals of the school. A theme of music has been carried throughout the book, With the aid of the trumpeters on the left pages and the horizontal bar With musical engravings on the right. If this Hassayamper has added to the enjoyment of the student body, when housed in this institution or scattered to the corners of the globe in later years, the purpose has been fulfilled. 4 r Z.: 'Q 1 1 X ll K , . si lg -' 'F NJ ll 2ll'l 'f-.5 1 J ' Ulf! .- e e 1-are -- - S55 .vw gs, , .4 or , A Q, V- .gr 'W ., 111' me S '13 QD 11' TT of--X rifwf SJENIIML lrunarmn smnnomom v I - Vu, Q in 'wif , ' W ffqf. .. -' -'H lk -1 if --l 5 A g Fl' 'f - 41' Ill V . . . . ,-- T U 5 rksscorr-,nnlzowp f, ',,v - ,win f L, fr, g l f., K 4' kgs' I K Y- .X r ,M LIEQIEHEB. CONTRACTOR The New School In the fall of last year bonds were passed by the townspeople that will enable the senior high school students to enter a new school next fall. This school will consist of four buildings-the administration, the science, and the liberal arts buildings, and the gymnasium. The administration building will contain the various school offices and the auditorium, over which will be located the library and study hall. The stage will be at the far end of the auditorium, away from the offices. The science and homemaking departments will occupy the science building, while the liberal arts building will contain the ordinary class rooms. The three main structures will be in the form of a U , with the gymnasium, the football field, and the tennis courts behind them. The football field will be sodded and will be a great improvement over any former field. Bleachers which may be folded up during the day and will be used during basketball games, as well as first-class equipment, will be installed in the gymnasium. This new school is to be located at Granite and Carleton streets and will be easily accessible to any part of town. X Fc. l., 'v ,IW . all . H. S. this year, but they will be only memories, for all of the other students, as well as the graduates, will soon leave these rooms for the last time. No doubt in their eagerness to enjoy the new school they will forget these scenes for a time, but when the newness has worn off, they will recall them with affec- tion, for they are reminders of the many happy hours spent at the old high school. The above scenes are but a few of the rooms that hold such happy memories. The quietness of the library, the explosions of the chem- istry room, the uproars of the typing room, and the smells of the cooking room are but a few of the many things to be left behind. In other spe- cialized rooms, such as the shops and the art and drawing rooms, are found the noises of the lathes and handsaws and the chatter of the art supply room. Of course, the same things will be found in the new school, but they will never be the same to those who have graduated here and to those who have been students here. Graduates ,,gjyQpening the year with the initiation of the Freshmen Class, the Senior Glagiactivities get under way the second week of the school year. The next Mievent of the year was the Senior Class play, Seven Keys to Baldpatej' '8 'mysterious, melodramatic farce, directed by Miss Savage. The play was presented in the high school auditorium to a capacity crowd. Coming next on a large list of activities was the Senior Hop given on December 22. The dance was a huge success due to the untiring efforts of the various committees and Mr. Cowley, Senior Class adviser. Senior Ditch Day was another event greatly enjoyed by the Raymond N. Cowley Class' One of the most enjoyable events of the entire year was the Senior Farewell Dance held in the form of a St. Patrick's Dance on March 17. The Senior Farewell Assembly was held on May 10. Climaxing a very successful year will be the commencement and baccalaureate exercises. The commencement program will be in the form of a play and the baccalaureate services will be given in the form of a pageant. These will bring to a close and usher out another suc- cessful senior class. Spooner TRACK TENNIS GOLF JUNIOR HIGH Football Before a cheering group of students and citizens ootball squad went to a victory against the in the opening game of the season. the season the games held much excite- ment and interest for the spectators. Among the many climaxes of the year were Max Edward's drop-kick in the final moments of the Clarkdale game to give Prescott a win, and the touchdown in the closing minutes of the Tempe game that gave the Badgers seven points although they finally lost the game. However, as always happens, along with its good moments our team had its despairing times. Although it reached the goal line three times our squad had to bow to defeat to a seemingly superior St. Mary's team. Prescott was gifted with the return of several lettermen this year, and it was upon their shoulders that the burden of the responsibil- ity went. At the close of the year several of our team were honored by being chosen for All-Northern. Those slated for that honor were Bill Boom and Albert Pruitt, with Arthur Converse on the second team and Paul Caldwell and Earl McLain on the third squad. Max Edwards received honorary mention because of his outstanding playing during the year. Despite these changes, there was no time when the boys did not play a hard fought game. The season brought to light several new and good plays which were brilliantly executed and which netted many points. In totaling the seasonis scores, both individually and as a group, it was found that Max Edwards had amassed a total of 185 points, with second place going to his teammate, Arthur Converse, with 98 points. The team total showed that as a group the players accumulated 698 points to their combined opponents, 523. In a final analysis of the playing of each boy it was found that eight had played enough quarters to receive the coveted letter. During the course of the season the team suffered the loss of William Boom, guard and captain, and Albert Pruitt, guard, because of accidents. These boys received their letters, however. Below: Crude mm-chzuiisin of al czirnivul booth and Seem-s of the carnival purzulc-. Carnival The annual high school carnival was held with great success this year. Since 1932 this event has taken a large place in school activities, not only for its entertainment, but for its profit. The insti- tution was created to augment the athletic fund which is usually lacking, but it is now something that is anticipated by every student in the fall. Every home room has some sort of booth or side show, in which most of its members help, either in the building, decorating, or maintaining. Recently a system of using script has been developed which simplifies the bookkeeping. Lorraine Carter was crowned queen of the carnival to top the events of the evening. With her chosen king, Arthur Converse, and all the attendants, she was crowned in a very impressive ceremony. The queen was elected by the votes of the students, and an exciting race was stimulated in the attempt for the students to elect their particular choices. A parade was held in the afternoon before the carnival. All sorts of floats and cars, which were decorated, and costumed students aroused the interest of the townspeople. The high school band took an active part in this. ii LaGuardia's Visit Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia of New York City, an alumnus of this school, spoke to the student body in an assembly last fall while he spent a few days in the place of his early life. On the day of his arrival he was welcomed by a parade in which all the school children and many townspeople participated. At the beginning of the assembly the roll of Mayor LaGuardia's graduating class, the class of 1898,was calledg all but three of the class were present. He gave an interesting talk upon Prescott High School during his time, after which he was presented with a genuine Navajo Indian blanket by Jack Ogg to show the appreciation of the student body. It was at this time that Mayor LaGuardia promised that, if it were possible, he would return to Prescott in the spring to lay the corn- er stone of the new high school. In the afternoon of the same day a point in Granite Dells was dedi- cated to Mayor LaGuardia's father, Achilles LaGuardia, who was band master at Whipple for many years. The Senior Class and the high school band participated. During the service the mayor took the baton and led the band in a march. As a remembrance of this event, the distinguish- ed visitor signed the bass drum for Mr. Backe. Vesper Service One of the school's outstanding contributions to the public each year is the Christmas Vesper Service which Was presented a Week before Christmas. In a darkened auditorium lighted only by the candles the musical part of the program Was presented. After a candle lighting service the girls of the mixed chorus entered carrying lighted tapers and the boys took their seats in the front of the auditorium, While a special girls' chorus was located in the balcony. To the accompaniment of soft organ music the Christmas scripture Was read between familiar carols sung by the mixed choruses of the music department under the direction of Mr. Backe. 4'Why the Chimes Rang, a play concerning a little girl who Wish- ed to witness the giving of gifts to the Christ child, Was then given. At the last moment she decided to stay behind and take care of an old woman Who sought shelter in the hut, but later she and the old Woman decided to go to the cathedral. There was a legend that if the perfect gift were given the chimes in the tower Would ring, but they had not rung for many years. In a colorful pageant the girl laid her gift upon the altar and the chimes pealed forth. 1n-imgim 1 -2-- - Choruses Assembly Early last fall the members of the advanced mixed chorus, the advanced girls' glee club, and the orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Backe, gave a special music assembly. The program was opened by three Well-known numbers by the orchestra. The next part of the program was a group of semi-classical songs by the members of the advanced mixed chorus dressed in their black and white uniforms. The advanced mixed chorus has Won first place in the annual music contest at Flagstaff for the last two years. This achievement is quite an honor and is gained only through hard work. This year, as the chorus is even better than usual, its performance was greatly enjoyed. The third part of the program was rather unusual, but still beauti- ful. The stage curtains opened on the advanced girls' glee club. Dressed in beautiful evening gowns, the girls sang a group of semi-classical songs, solo parts of which were sung by Leah Bunker and Jean Curry. Anna Margaret Connell, with piano and chorus accompaniment, played a violin solo to end the program. Besides performing for assemblies these organizations have sung for various other affairs. Non-Original Plays In order to give the students a more varied program in assemblies, the dramatics class and the home rooms presented plays. Among the nine entries in the non-original contest, three were awarded prizes. The play given by Mr. Olivo's room, which was awarded first place, was the story of a young man planning to elope, who changed his mind at the last minute to marry a second girl. Mem- bers of the cast were Max Edwards, Allie Emmons, and Carolyn Lane. Those in the play given by Mr. Ivin's, second prize winner, whose story centered around a millionaire posing as a plumber in order to marry the daughter of a rich lady, were Hollis Hill, Lorraine Wilson, and Gloria Rollins. I Wouldn't Do Such a Thing, given by Mr. Munz's room, which won third, showed the typical life of a brother and a sister. Those in the play were Florentina Guerrero, William Hubbard, Tillie Urias, Re- fugio Rodarte, and Beatrice Gilliland. The dramatics class presented a play in which Katherine Jane Ger- nand, Robert Kivley, Anna Margaret Connell, Kenneth Eckert, Laura Warner, Stanley Day, and John Favour took part. The plot centered around a young couple who were about to be married. i z:z ui-1-Q-al : Faculty Plays On April 12, the faculty presented its annual assembly. This year's assembly consisted of two hilarious comedies. The first, starring Miss Wade and Mr. Munz, was the story of boy get girl in a new way. The second play was a very subtle skit in which five of the male teachers portrayed the finer points of the drama. Both of the plays were directed by Miss Savage. This faculty assembly was enjoyed, perhaps, as much as any other single assembly. Although the custom of our teachers doing their part in assembly activities is rather new, it is anticipated each year by the student body. In observance of Arizona Day an assembly was presented on Feb- ruary 14. A complete program was given in which many students and townspeople participated. The highlight of the assembly was a tableau showing Marcos de Niza on the desert, portrayed by Calvin Judd, who is pictured above. The casts of the faculty assembly are pictured in the above panel. Top, left to right: Mr. Yost, Miss Hardaway, Miss Osterle, Mr. Mc- Narie, Miss Baken, Miss Wade, Mr. Munz, Miss Brodie, Miss Haw- thorne, Miss Brinkmeyer, Miss Childress, Miss Elivian. Bottom: Mr. Ivins, Mr. Shamhart, Mr. Cary, Mr. Long, Mr. Pratt. Original Plays One of the outstanding events of the school year was the return of one of Prescott's former students, Miss Dorothy Faye Who is now in Hollywood, and her co-star, TeX Ritter. They appeared here dur- ing an assembly and furnished a delightful hour of entertainment. A great deal of talent was displayed when the original play con- test Was presented. The Winning play, 'fBoarding House Blues, given by Miss Wiggins' home room, concerned the antics of a group of college students in a boarding house. It was Written by Raymond Garber, and the characters left to right are Donald Sitler, Pat Watkins, Raymond Garber, John Nutter, Margaret Whitlow, and Floyd Haymore. The results of a family's doing just exactly as each member pleased was portrayed in You Can't Take It Here, given by Miss Hardawayls home room. The cast of characters of the play Written by the entire home room is, left to right, Marilyn Miller, Vincent Penticost, Kathryn Bobo, Wayne Loving, Everett Cutler. During the year the Stagecraft club turned its talents to acting in- stead of making up the actors, and the result Was a very interesting per- formance. The characters are Walter Hyde, Betty Steed, Kenneth Eck- ert, and Frances Patterson. u4-w ng , Band and Orchestra As two of the leading organizations of the school, the band and orchestra represent the school at many occasions. The band inspires spirit at the football and basketball games while the orchestra lends at- mosphere at the Senior and Junior class plays. These are only a few of the many times when the two organizations are allowed to put forth their best efforts. The Northern Arizona Music Contest is the ultimate goal for these groups, and each spring a certain number of members are taken to Flagstaff where they play at their best for Prescott High. There are several other smaller instrumental organizations whose members con- sist of those from the band and orchestra. Such smaller organizations win many honors for the school. Among the members of the band and orchestra there are various ones who are outstanding. There are Various solo contests at Flagstaff and many of the members of the band and orchestra bring home high honors. 'Seven Keys to Baldpate' Seven Keys to Baldpate, the play which the Senior Class gave before a large audience on Novem- ber 4, Was a mysterious, melodramatic farce under the direction of Miss Savage. The action of the play takes place in the office of Baldpate Inn. William Magee, a novelist, comes in the dead of Winter to Baldpate, a popular summer resort. He has made a bet with the owner of the inn, that he Will Write a novel in twenty-four hours, using Baldpate Inn as the theme of his novel. The most sinister and melodramatic events take place in the deserted inn which is the scene of deep-laid intrigues. The surprise ending explains the Whole situation. This play was probably the most outstanding performance given for the public by the class. The auditorium was filled to capacity giv- ing everyone tvvo hours of thrill-packed enjoyment. It showed talent and cooperation on the part of all who assisted in the staging of the pro- duction. Those taking part in the play left to right are John Favour, Doro- thy Deming, David Windsor, Richard Prince, Richard McNeill, Jim Allen, Laura Warner, Clifton Collins, Zoeleen McLain, J. W. Dean, William Boom, Jean Condit, Jack Ogg, and Don Rhodes. l L l I l , I U-' X, m 'Seventeen' Booth Tarkington's immortal Seventeen, un- der the direction of Mr. Cox, was finally presented by the Junior Class after several delays and many hardships. The play was highly praised by the citi- zens and students who attended it, however. This year the cast had to undergo many diffi- culties in order to complete its performance. Chief among the obsta- cles was an epidemic of influenza which held sway for several weeks. In the course of events the part of Mrs. Baxter had to be recast because of the sickness of the student taking that part. Throughout the play ran the amusing attempt of Willie Baxter to conceal from his parents his love affair with a newcomer to his home town and his acquisition of a dress suit. The characters left to right in the top picture are Jack Wyly, Wallie Banks, LaVonne Kersten, Mary Brooks, Orville Lawson, Joe Bul- litt, Marjorie Pitchford, Jane Baxter, Jack Harrington, Genesis, Ken- neth Eckert, Johnnie Watson, Stanley Day, Mr. Baxter, Priscilla Bachle, Mrs. Baxter, Robert Kivley, Mr. Parcherg Gloria Rollins, May Parcherg Betty Jo Geimer, Ethel Bokeg Max Edwards, William Syl- vanus Baxter, Vesta Bradley, Lola Pratt, Bill Kelly, George Crooper. They not only Work during school hours to give the students their bi-Weekly paper, but spend long hours after school and in the evenings working so that the paper may come out on time and contain news to in- terest and satisfy everyone in the school, which is no easy task. P2355 1' 'Y' 5 -M, mix Lg' Q 5 Q Organizations In order to make the student life in school more complete and in- teresting, various useful organizations, ranging from athletic to social, have been formed. Each one of these clubs is under the supervision of an instructor who has volunteered his services because of his interest or one who has been elected by the members of the club. Although several of the clubs are relatively new and others require outstanding ability, the interest in them has been Well aroused and the memberships are increasing rapidly. Some of the clubs compete with other clubs and schools in their mental and physical skills. Moving picture films, both educational and entertaining, have been secured by many of the clubs for information and instruction. Some of the clubs have also given plays for the entertainment of the student body. The older clubs are functioning effectively and the future still holds great responsibilities for all organizations. 4.4-...a.......
