'11 COURTESY J. WALTER JONES ofzewofzb MAY this issue of THE I'IASSAYAMPER,', featuring ships, be held among your most cherished possessions. As time passes may it bring you fond memories of days spent in Prescott High School. ' Ships-from row boats to ocean liners-may be large and beautifulg they may be small and seemingly insignifi- cant. Not always do the largest and most beautiful vessels contain the best material. Each has its purpose. This is true of human beings. Often the most beauti- ful are not made of any better material than the seem- ingly insignificantf' Each has a place in life. If this volume in later years sails into port with a cargo of joy and happiness the book has accomplished its purpose. an appfzeciafion WE, the staff, Wish to express appre- ciation to the administration and faculty for their cooperation and assistance during the making of this annual and especially to Mr. C. T. Shirley for his guidance. We want to thank the business and professional men who through their advertisements have made this book possible. e icafion To our principal this annual is dedicated. Unerringly he has guided us through the maze of education. Wisely and liberally he has advised our student council. We dedicate this annual to our friend and everyone's friend, Mr. Hendrix. 4 MR. A. HQSSHYHITIPER l938 13 7-lfme gfudenf godnl Gflgicefzs T HE student body officers, Robert Horne, presidentg Robert Porter, vice-presidentg Barbara Baker, secretaryg and Edgar Rucker, who was appointed assistant treasurer by the student council, have proved to be exceptional in qualities of leadership and iniative. Their ability was especially shown in leading the student council. A student body may be known by the type of officers it chooses, and in this case, excellent judgment has been shown by the choice of leaders who are uniformly efficient and worthy. K K CK ccomplislfzmenfs 06 time gfudenf Gounci THE student council, functioning as a closely knit body of home room representatives, student body officers, and class presidents has accomplished much during the year of 1937-38. Credit may be given to the council fo1' the establishment of a school cafeteria, for satisfactory solution of a difficult traffic situ- ation, and for other special projects. The committee system of legislation was used to a great extent. The committees carried over from former years-the traffic committee, the improvement committee, and the reception committe-were sup- plemented by new committees-the athletic committee, the awards com- mittee, and the activities committee. This system worked for greater efficiency and speed in introducing and investigating proposals. 1938 HHSSHYPIIIIPGR -A. i JY ,xxo A-1 Q Q -TQ ' 5.4 ikl S,-lg-,gxg Lsx-I ..,,g-ff kg X +2 s!-'xg xx .mu-N, x' A- kJ rs fx J it Wg ,r --'4 9 W-Q wants TON N F -ig -.-..f tk:-'Na 0 X 4.9 Ee 'Q 51 if 5 J :S 5' 6 1, vi ff Qi if 1 C I N I NIR. The Seniors this year had a long list of activities. At the head of the list stands the trek to the letter P with the Freshmen. An outstanding event in the year 1937-38 was the Senior play, Come Out of the Kitchen, which proved a great success. The long awaited Ditch Day for the Seniors was the most popular event. The annual demonstrates the fine cooperation shown by the entire Senior class. After beginning on it so late in the year it took real teamwork to put it over. And last but not least was the graduation exercises, baccalaureate, and commencement. The progressive spirit of the class was demonstrated in their selection of a pro- gram in which the students took part. There has been a decided movement to get away from the speaker type of commencement. 1938 HHSSHYHMPGR CLARA E. Six main events completed our calendar. Activities started with a dance held on the eve of the Thanksgiving vacation. The Juniors were thrilled just after Christmas with the receiving of their class insignia in the form of rings, bracelets, belt buckles, and pins. On March 18, the Juniors staged Spring Fever under the direction of Mr. Cox. The crown was relinquished by the Seniors to the Juniors in both the boys and the girls interclass basketball tournaments. The junior United States history classes presented a burlesque of twelve acts on American history written and directed by Mr. Cowley. To conclude the events of the year, the annual prom and banquet was held. 1938 HHSSQYQIHPGR Back Row: William Boom, Hayden Brown, Bill Browning, Louis Bunte, Junior Browning, Bill Bumstead. The main attraction of the evening' was The Big' Apple danced by members of the Sophomore Class. St. Patrick's Day was the theme of the second dance, and many shamrocks and green decorations provided the Irish atmosphere. All the dancers were presented with Irish hats and shamrocks, and an Irish program was pre- sented. HHSSHYQIIIPGR l938 47 Y 6 A uniofz gfudenf Gounci A VERY efficient Junior High Student Council has just completed the year. It is to be especially commended for its excellent plan of merits and demerits and its plan to raise grades. Under the plan of merits each student started with 100 which could be won by having all grades of one's, by being a class or student body officer, by planying on athletic teams, and by taking part in other activities. Tardiness, cheating, ditching, stealing, and des troying school property were offenses which caused 'deductions ot merits. In an effort to raise grades, each person who had made below average in any subject was brought before the council. He was told to see the teacher who taught the subject in which he was failing. Offenders were not penalized the first time, but if they were brought before the council a second time, a penalty was inflicted. K K K K uniofz High Oftgicefzs THE success of the Junior High School has been greatly due to Christie Allison, president of the student body, Herbert Boom, vice president, and Rex Groves, secretary. Each of these boys has done his work thoroughly and efficiently in all cases. Working closely together, the three officers have helped to make this student body one of the best junior high bodies to be in Prescott High School. Credit must be given to Alice Emmons and Augustine Rodarte, the yell leaders, for a great deal of the effectiveness with which the junior high athletic teams played. Miss McDonald and Miss Brodie, faculty advisers, having fur- nished guidance to the student officers. 1938 HHSSHYHIHPGR X' RX 4 -I-L'- ----X 5 s4go-'1- -1 'ir Q -5 , 5' QQLEX ,, . Although only three of the boys were lettermen, they were backed by several boys who had from one to two years experience in track. The re- turning lettermen were: Espinoza, Miller, Malyjurek. This was one of the best track seasons Prescott has experienced in many years. On April 23, the Badgers held their triangular meet with Glendale and Wickenberg, with the Badgers winning the meet 79 to 5114 and 2714. The following Saturday, they toured to Winslow where they also won the meet by a score of 45 to 4315, scored by Flagstaff, the closest com- petitor. In the meet, the Badger relay team broke the 880-relay record. They lowered the record to 1.39. The track squad also took part in the northern track meet in Flagstaff on May 14, but at the time of publication the results were not known. This year's successful season was due mainly to the fact that the team was very well balanced in nearly every event. 54 1938 HHSSPIYHITIPGR GOLF CLUB Back Row: Mr. Cowley, Dick Miller, Max Edwards, Bill Boom, Russell Thornhill, Jack Ogg. Jack Post and Hayden Brown placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the tournament in a field of 74 golfers. On April 30th, Post and Brown went to Winslow and won the golf tournament held there. A four man team also entered the northern tournament held in Flagstaff on May 14. Soon, however, the music for the Northern Arizona Music Contest descended upon it and the real work began. After long, untiring practice the day came when the soloists and members of band, orchestra, glee clubs, mixed chorus, and ensembles set for Flagstaff. Before it was realized the contest was over and Prescott returned the winner of the contest. They placed in all nineteen events having seven first places, eleven seconds, one third, and an outstanding soloist and scholarship winner. Closing their year of musical events the department furnished the music for the Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. 66 l938 HHSSHYQMPEB I - 55 55 L? be Qpfrfzeciafion MISS Savage has long been known to students of Prescott High School as an exceptional and valuable dra- matics coach. Ppfzeciafion NUMEROUS clubs and organizations furnish out-of- school recreation and training for students with special interests. The value of this training can not be over- estimated, for one who is active in such things in school practically always benefits from it in later years. Leadership, initiative, and social adaptability are de- veloped while the student participates in those activities in which he is interested. Faculty sponsors of clubs should be commended for the amount of time and energy they spent to make each club a success. Without the help and advice of the sponsor, it would be impossible for the club to achieve the success now possible. Gini: activities I N the school a number of clubs have been organized for the purpose of experimentation in the given field of in- terest. The most active ones this year are the Camera Club, Debate Club, Science Club, Rifle Club and Art Club. All of these meet at intervals to work on a given project. The two largest organizations are the Yellow Jackets and the Girls Athletic Association. The first group com- poses the cheering section at all athletic contests, while the G. A. A. promotes recreation in the fields of girls' sports. Other groups have specific tasks to perform. The Stagecraft and Costume Club takes charge of makeup and costumes for assemblies and plays, While the Library Club takes active duty during hours that students may check out books. The Badger staff which has been listed as a club has an expressed duty of publishing the school newspaper. The Lettermen's Club and Quill and Scroll are pri- marily honorary groups. The Tumbling team gave a per- formance in assembly. The 15 Club was organized this year for the purpose of promoting goodwill among schools. 86 1938 I-IHSSHYHITIPGR X65 I gL S H r y N if K A ' XXL ff I I I X A' X X X 1 ,f X X,,Xf .x Nw ,Q 1 .
