Text from Pages 1 - 82 of the 1961 volume:

Alpha 1961 is a book of meaningful doorways. To the student nurse these doors represent an expansion of knowledge — portals to the exciting, to the challenging, and to the unknown. No one can express the individual feelings that one has upon embarking on an experience beyond these doors. Our story attempts to recapture some of the experiences and thoughts we have had as we passed through these doorways. It is our hope that you will remember with gratification and satisfaction your own per- sonal experiences. And so we dedicate Alpha 1961 to the student nurse. Carol Cunningham, Editor ALPHA 1961 Expectant, bewildered, yet optimistic we approach the threshold of our profession. PRESBYTERIAN - ST. LUKE ' S HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING CHICAGO-ILLINOIS As W3 mset the demands of the patient we grow both professionally and personally. Page 5 Through team nursing we begin to comprehend the leadership responsibilities of a graduate nurse. We soon find deceptive the seeming quiet of night duty. Supervision insures the safe application of knowledge. PI We develop skills which enable us to make a better evaluation of the patient ' s condition. We discover that co-operation enhances communication. Page 7 We share the fulfillment of a long awaited promise. Pags 9 We find that even the strongest sometimes seek strength in solitude— away from the pressing crowds. We encourage the patient to participate. We recognize both the obstacles and the advancements on the road back to society. Page 16 We are responsible for continuing healing initiated by a surgeon ' s hands. Page 17 We learn more about families as we care for their children. Page 23 We decide how best to present our experiences through pictures and print. We appreciate the leadership shown by those who did not hesitate in making this yearbook a reality. Page 30 For the time, for the thought, and for the long hours of work which they spent to nnake lhis yearbook possible we are especially indebted to: Sherrill Carnagey Assistant Editor Ceann Bryan Vizma Nedzveckis AAarjorie Hilberg Linda Rollins Sylvia Kelsey Mary AAonago Marian Panici Sandra Thurston Priscilla Voigt Austin Field — the photographer who willingly went out of his way to make our yearbook a success. As the yearbook nears completion we begin to anticipate the appearance of the finished product. Page 31 Transformed in soft dresses and glowing smiles, we dance and dance. We are mutually delighted with this very special evening.
