HO OF ALPHA CHICAGO, ILLINOIS FOREWORD Great is the art of beginning ... For with the beginning comes the blood of new youth. Youth and vitaKty are assembled from all parts of these United States. With the beginning comes a new understanding. Not only has it brought the understanding of the present, but an increased awareness of the future and the responsibilities to be faced. For as youth steps out into the world, it is filled with the sense of duty and devotion to add to the progress of civilization. It is up to the youth to better social and economic standards, to promote the understanding of good health and to advance knowledge. With this heritage, the beginning is now! It ' DEDICATION • • • • To Virginia Lapie — For being friendly and kind ... for showing understanding and patience ... for giving guidance and direction in these past three years — the Class of I960 dedicates this yearbook to you. Our beginning in nursing will forever be linked with the opening pages of this book. In the first few pages we were introduced to a new school of nursing and we became pioneers in the two year program with intern- ship. In keeping with the new program we wore a new gray uniform topped by a new white, square, organdy cap. As we proudly walked through the corridors we felt like ambassadors of the great new hos- pital which had resulted from the merger of two equally renowned institutions. During our first two years we were busy learning about our chosen career. We learned the techniques, procedures, and the im- portance of interpersonal relationships. At the same time we learned how and what it means to be professional. We set the pattern which would serve as a guide for years to come. Our Twin Sis Program is one which we shall always remember. This took place because the physical merger had not been completed and we needed to become acquainted with our sister class. We often met for parties, dinners, and picnics. Also not to be forgotten are the numerous incidents related to moving back and forth between the hospitals. There were many hectic and yet strangely enjoyable times in which we packed and unpacked as we transferred our belongings to and fro. Pa.ee 32 By the end of our Junior year the merger was complete. In small groups we began to migrate to Presbyterian-St. Luke ' s Hospital. Now our central home was truly in the Medical Center. We worked hard and became members of the growing hospital — we helped to pro- mote the team plan for total nursing care. September 1959!! How impossible it had seemed two years be- fore that we would reach that day of Internship. No longer would we be regarded as students, but rather as Interns! As we walked down the aisles of the church our future in the year to come was not so difficult to grasp. Our hearts were filled with dreams of what these new pages would disclose. We were the first to enter the Internship Program. In our new uniforms we composed a dim, hazy, white line throughout the hos- pital. We now entered the final phase of our formal nursing educa- tion — that of practicing as members of the professional nursing staff. As team leaders we met new responsibilities and learned to relate to other personnel, thus becoming an integral part of the hospital. The year has flown by quickly and now graduation is in sight. We shall be the first to receive the new graduation pin with its cross of blue on a field of gold. We solemnly pledge ourselves before God and in the presence of this assembly ... — - with this we enter our new profession realizing that these words will forever live in our hearts. By Elaine Mendenhall Pa e 33 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Sealed — Mavis Grant, Treasurer; Judy Nelson, S.G.A. Representative. Standing — Linda Oyler, President; Betty Rogowski, Vice-President; Carol Wunderlich, Secretary. 1961 All the pieces of knowledge are coming together with time and study. As Juniors we have tried to make the foundation for our future work more solid. Some of the previous obstacles and problems no longer seem so great and we can now laugh at the mistakes we have made. We are in the middle — the past year has flown by and yet it seems as though the end is nowhere in sight. Page 36 CLsi of 1961 Seated — B. Aigner, ' K. Dahlquist, B. Thompson, Seated — L. Clark, I. They will not be soon nor easily forgotten as we remember sharing the latest news at tea, rushing to get signed in before that last minute ' s grace, the numerous injections and gruesome monthly chore of weighing in, cram- ming for that big med-surg exam, and the countless frolicking times we had together.
