ALPHA 19 5 8 ' In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God, all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. R.S.V. John hi -5 PRESENTED BY PRESBYTERIAN - ST. LUKE ' S HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING CHICAGO We have come to a great beginning. In the space of three years we have s een the merger of two institutions of medicine which will grow to be- come a living monument to healing. Years of planning have resulted in one institution for those who will dedicate themselves to working with their heads and hearts. All things were made through Him, and in the creation of the new hospital there lies great potential for those who work to alleviate suffering. What part have we in this? We are always there— the helping hand, the soft touch, the sympathetic listener. For in us is Life, and this Life is the light of men—. We carry the lamp of comfort to those in pain. We are Alpha, the beginning, but we are also Omega, the end. For each of us is Alpha— each a beginning light shining- each carrying her own lamp of service. And we will continue to do so until we hand the lamp to those who follow us, that they may carry on this work. Every year those who graduate pass on their lamps, that the light may never be dimmed. Ours is the shining light of service, the light which cannot be overcome by darkness. Kathryn Welterlen
