ALPHA 19 5 8 ' In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God, all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. R.S.V. John hi -5 PRESENTED BY PRESBYTERIAN - ST. LUKE ' S HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING CHICAGO We have come to a great beginning. In the space of three years we have s een the merger of two institutions of medicine which will grow to be- come a living monument to healing. Years of planning have resulted in one institution for those who will dedicate themselves to working with their heads and hearts. All things were made through Him, and in the creation of the new hospital there lies great potential for those who work to alleviate suffering. What part have we in this? We are always there— the helping hand, the soft touch, the sympathetic listener. For in us is Life, and this Life is the light of men—. We carry the lamp of comfort to those in pain. We are Alpha, the beginning, but we are also Omega, the end. For each of us is Alpha— each a beginning light shining- each carrying her own lamp of service. And we will continue to do so until we hand the lamp to those who follow us, that they may carry on this work. Every year those who graduate pass on their lamps, that the light may never be dimmed. Ours is the shining light of service, the light which cannot be overcome by darkness. It was here that we learned basic nursing care principles, and practiced essential procedures. Whether giving a back ridj or caring for the most complex surgical patient, our days were always fidl. In reviewing this division of our experience we recall memorable incidents and find that we now meet our responsibilities with more self-reliance, confidence, and gratification. Concentrating on differentiating lids scissors from that, while eying the ever-waiting pahii of the surgeon, it was rare that we could be one step ahead of him. Still, just as we had pronounced ourselves utterly hopeless, a word of encouragement seemed to boost our morale. Dramatic, educational, exciting — these help to describe our experiences in the OR. Anesthesia ... the first step It is doubtful that many experiences in our lives will be more impressive than our first glimpse of the miracle of life. To wit- ness the grand entrance of that squawling little bundle allows us to forget the strife and confusion of the world he is inheriting. The love shining in a mother ' s eyes, the bursting vest of a proud father, the healthy cry of a hungry baby — all of these offer hope for today and faith in a tomorrow. 21 Who but a child has the ability to discern true feeling? And who but this little, uninhibited person can say exactly what he thinks? Motherly instinct , we learned, is not an inborn quality; discipline can be a difficult task. Relating stories, settling arguments, and offering a comforting hug after a bad dream— all were part of our challenging work with children. 23 ricnJsLip... lte inexpressive comfort of fee ingf safe witlt a person. 24 On our three month affiliation at Anna State Hospital we learned that a good psychiatric nurse is a good listener. We were very much a part of the intensive treatment given to pa- tients. It was a rewarding experience to help a patient discover and realize his problems so that he could over- come them. IT V.N. A.: Visiting Nurses walk miles to help heal. Neither rain, snow, nor hot sun keeps them from making their rounds to the ill at home. Transfusion Therapy Service: Here we spend a week learning to draw blood used in deter- mining the patient ' s state of health. We also learn to start intravenous fluids. Six weeks at Hines Veterans ' Hospital helped us to learn infectious technique and care of the tuberculosis patient as well as to gain insight into the problems of an individual with a long-term illness. 26 H. An international organization, NCF helps students gain a deepened understanding of themselves and of others. It strengthens the faith and enriches the lives of those who jjariicipnte. The Student Government Association ' s duties are many, and range from the planning of school social functions to enforcement of school regulations. It helps stimulate interest in district, state and national student organizations for nurses. Representatives were sent to state and national conventions in 1958. Back row, left to right; E. With ghosts, goblins, cowboys, and every imaginable character we had our Halloween fun. These regular celebrations, some of which don ' t even require a special occasion, all serve to keep us from becoming a dull nurse . 65 The strains of a gay foxtrot, the swish of skirts, the smiles of a happy group — these words could represent any Presbyterian -St. Luke ' s dance. Whether in the Chandelier Room at Presbyterian or the Grand Ballroom of the Edgewater Beach Hotel, they were the loveliest nights of the year. It Happened on an Insland at St. Luke ' s and it was Tropica Tactics at Presbyterian. One of the biggest moments of 1958 was the production of this musical— written and produced by the house staff and students. No matter what the name, it was fun for all and another new first for the combined school. 67 COMIilNEl) ALPHA KDMORIAI, SI AFF Standing — left to right: Miss C.
