It ' s knowing that someone is always there to laugh with, cry with, study with, party with, and tool out with. It ' s an extension of your family — people to count on. It ' s Guzzler runs, shaving cream fights, hall parties, panty raids, and mutual closets. It ' s memories that will last a lifetime. It ' s home. v« ' — Cathy Vaughn Dorm Council President ' hen asked what influenced their S choosing PC for their college educa- tion, many students noted the friendliness and professionalism of PC ' s faculty and administration. The fact that the mentors take their students ' interests into account represents an enduring tra- dition at PC. A unique relationship is formed through the exchange of thoughts and ideas between students and adminis- trators. It is not unusual to see students stopping by the Ivory Tower for an afternoon chat, engaging in a student-fac- ulty sports match, or enjoying a dinner in the home of an administrator. This rare quality enables PC to become a second home to her students. Jane McDowell and Kari Needham Copy Editors Leaders new year has begun. The sight of new faces and the sound of new voices add to the excitement as the Freshmen Orientation Board welcomes the new students to PC ' s Campus. After a long day of unpacking memories from home and creating the refuge which will become home for the next year, the freshmen attend their first real party at PC — the Freshmen Mixer. Six-thirty A:M. comes early. The friend- ly voices of the F.O.B. members of yester- day abruptly change to the voices of drill sergeants leading their troops. Getting up in the dark and parading to G.D.H. with the stylish garb provided by the orienta- tion board reminds each freshman of his inferiority in his new society. Though the value of such an orientation program has been pondered, the strengths of it are evident in the unity of the freshmen and the upperclassmen. — Jimbo Shoptaw S.G.A. President student Activities ' he 1984- ' 85 school year has been the Student Union Board ' s third year. Each year S.U.B. has grown in membership and program variety. S.U.B., a branch of the Student Government As- sociation, is made of volunteer students who work together to improve the quality of student life. S.U.B. ' s three subcommittees — Spe- cial Activities, Dances Concerts, and Movies — organize yearly activities in- cluding the Blue Sox Festival, Gene Cot- ton Concert, Comedy Week, juggler Ed- ward Jackman, hypnotist Gil Eagles, and scuba lessons. S.U.B. is also responsible for the Welcome Back Dance, Freshmen Mixer, and the annual Spring Swing Festi- val. The success of the Student Union Board is attributed to the advice and hard work of the new Director of Student Ac- tivities, Debbie White; to the elbow grease and great ideas put into motion by the S.U.B. members; and to the students who support S.U.B. by attending the various functions. — Amy Winston S.U.B. Chairman he yearly quest has begun. The scholars once again have purchased their costly books and have trudged to the classroom v here aw aiting profes- sors have readied their lecturing skills. PC has an exceptional variety of academics which prepares its students for the stead- ily approaching future. Time marches on. but PC helps her students to keep in step. As their last year approaches, seniors are eager to begin their careers. With a solid liberal arts education. PC ' s students have a variety of job opportunities awaiting them. Our graduates uphold the reputa- tion which Presbyterian College has es- tablished through the years. Jane McDowell and Karl Needham Copy Editors  i Study_,|J|tudy, study w. I believe that Spring Swing is certainly a culturally en- riching experience. Why no CEP?) But when it comes down to it, most of our time is spent with the goings on that never go on the calandar of events. It ' s amazing how we designate our priorities, how we spend that precious com- modity called time. Free time? Does it exist? If moments make the memory, then many of our memories might be composed of helping a friend in a crisis, wasting time, finding ways to waste time, looking for time, (looking for love?), making that existential trek to the empty mailbox, and completing the assignments which may or may not have rel- evance to where you are. Where are vou? 23 studying. Of course, it happens. That ' s what we tell our parents anyway, or they tell us. Some people even study regularly. Some of us always seem to study- ing, but always the night before a test. Where does it happen? In the library? Ha! Try vacant class- rooms, the ladies ' lounge, the canteen, the great outdoors. 24 1 w - 25 Fall Fling? 26 Fall Fling! Thanks to some creative minds and a lot of hard work on the part of the Women ' s Social Hall, PC instituted Fall Fling this year in hopes of improving those late semester blues. A good turn out to hear the Wreckin ' Crew and to take part in the activities on the Pondo made the return of Fall Fling next year practically an inevitabil- ity. The women ' s plan to give the social life at PC a lift worked, and it looks as if a new tradition for fall was born. 27 The Madrigal Dinner Concert Lords: Jonathon Roberts. In Clinton Presbyterian College welcomed to its campus this year Uwe Neugebauer, Andres Larrenaga and Magali Alvarny. These three students and teachers came to the US by way of two organizations: Amity Institute and the National Endow- ment for the Humanities. While they have helped with the instruction of language classes, the three students have also at- tended various classes at the college. Uwe, a German, actually grew up in Egypt and Morocco. He is pursuing his Ph.D. degree in a course consisting of studies in language, political science, law, and eco- nomics. Magali recently completed her law degree in France. Andres will return to complete his last year in medical school in Uruguay. We thank these students for the contribution they have made here at PC. They have offered us with some unique insights into their cultures as well as a new perspective of our own. 40 CrossRoads is one of the new additions to the P.C. campus. Not really an organi- zation or club, CrossRoads is exactly what the name suggests: it is a place where people ' s paths cross and the com- mon bond of Christ ' s love is shared. CrossRoads began when the Christian groups on campus realized the need for a place where students can get together for fun, study, and fellowship. With the help of Dean Nixon, Greg Henly, and others, the basement of Georgia Dorm was quick- ly converted into what is now known as CrossRoads. Meetings are held regularly to plan social functions and service projects and to just keep in touch with each other. Activities of the Social Hall include a Crush Party (for which all the male students anxiously await an invitation), a semi-formal Christmas Par- ty, and a Big Sister-Little Sister Program. This year, the Social Hall also sponsored a Fall Fling — the fall version of PC ' s fam- ous Spring Swing.      5fl ' B     '  ' «  2 ' '  « « ' ' — Ml 1 Officers: Seated - LesHe Tomasovich, Secretary: Amy Myers, Vice-President Standing - Marty Martin, Treasurer; Susan Mishoe. I truly belie ' e th reasons, Mr. King, because yc j do counts and because you mac us tl 1985 Pac Sac to you for a j ) wel Who am I? I am the I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talkiRgr4- e !e«f| fccept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he aione among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet ' s, the writer ' s, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man to endure by lifting his heart, by inding him of the courage and honor and hope and pnSe and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet ' s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail. This year was an exciting year for PC football fans as PC returned to its winning ways of old. PC finished with a winning record of 7-4. This was the best record for PC ' s football team since 1979. Statistically, it was an- other good year for the Blue Hose football team. On offense, PC had a total of 125 first downs. They rushed for 69 first downs and passed for 38 first downs. PC rushed for a total of 1303 yards on 490 attempts. PC passed for a total 926 yards on 190 attempts. Defensively, Lawrence Jackson led all PC tacklers with 61 unassisted tackles. Coach Cally Gault stated that his only goal for this year was for the team to do as well as it could. With respect to this goal, Coach Gault ' s said he was pleased overall with the success of this year ' s team and stat- ed that regardless of the circum- stances the team never gave up. Coach Gault said his number one priority for next year was to assure Presbyterian ' s continuing excite- ment, spirit, and class PC fans are accustomed to seeing. This year ' s tri-captains were Michael Greene, Charles Huff, and J.F. Lucas. 149 Volleyball 1985 From left to right Mary Helen Mathews. Kendall Sapp. Sarah Hydrick. Miss Galloway stated that this year ' s team schedule was tougher than in years past because of tougher competition and more tournaments on the weekends, but she added that it was a builder of character for the team. Miss Galloway was asked whether she was pleased with the accom- plishments of this year ' s girl ' s team and what her top priority was for next year ' s girl ' s volleyball team. Student and faculty sup- port increased from previous years and the fans were very enthusiastic. The team was a talented, well disciplined team. Coach Ralph Poison stated that the team had a huge amount of over round ability and a lot of personality. They were fun to watch and fun to be around. A highlight game in the season was at Flor- ida Southern. Presbyterian not only beat the NCAA division II school 5-2, but also got a chance to exercise their personality on the Florida beaches. The team ' s record, 7-9-1, is a little deceiving of their actual perfor- mance. Added to their playing schedule this year were four NCAA division I schools, one NCAA division II school and one NCAA divi- sion III school. Presbyterian had very re- spectable performances against each of these schools. They even forced two of the Division I schools. The Citadel and Jackson- ville University, into overtime play before narrow losses had to be recorded. Three schools the team faced were NAIA nationally ranked within the top-twenty schools in the country: Erskine, Winthrop, and USC-Spar- tanburg. Overcoming their tough schedule, the team placed fifth among the twelve NAIA schools in our conference. They went on to the NAIA district six tournament after beat- ing Oglethorpe College 4-0. Co-captains for this year ' s team were Bret Armstrong, Mike Gruber, and Banks Neil. Of- fensive stand-outs were forward Harry Pe- terson and Mid-fielder Bret Armstrong. Pe- terson had twelve goals with eight assists and was NAIA District 6 player of the week for the week ending from October 10. Arm- strong also lead the team in 10 assists and four goals. John Harrell, a two year starter, was also an outstanding mid-fielder. Henry Hall and Banks Neil were defensive stan- douts, each being tremendous defenders. Also Coach Poison stated that freshman goalie Jimmy Eyerman was by far the best goalie in the NAIA District 6 player of the week for the week ending September 16. ' s golf coach Elliott Poss said the team possessed the qualities to be a good team and cited the fact that the golf team returned five lettermen from last year ' s team: Andy Walk- er, Dwayne Garick, Robert Youngblood, David Elliott, and Bill Warren. The golf team played in many tournaments and had several matches. Pictured above are David Elliott, Steven Mc- Donald, Andy Walker, and Robert Youngblood. 160 Rifle Team Front row (I to r): Jason McDanlel. Mali McGinn. The 1984-85 Presbyterian College Rifle team began its sec- ond season since being re-instated last year. This year ' s team had matches against South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. One of the tougher matches for this year ' s team was against North Carolina State, a NCAA top twenty team. Captain Karnes, Presbyterian ' s coach, states that this year ' s team schedule was going to be tough because Presbyterian has to play teams that are in a bigger division than Presbyteri- an. With tougher competition. Captain Karnes said that he would be happy with a .500 or better record. This year ' s team captain was Chip Holly, a three year veter- an. The Presbyterian College Rifle team returned four letter- men from last year and the varsity was divided into A and B teams. 161 Women ' s Tennis First row (I to r): Jennifer Carter, Elana Gourley. P.C. returned 12 players from last year ' s team, which had the best record ever (25-6) for P.C. The Blue Hose finished 13th in the NAIA last year. Coach Butch Estes said that his personal goals for this year ' s team were for the team to play at the same level as last year and win 20 or more games for the third year in a row — an unprecedented achieve- ment in P.C. basketball history. He also said he hoped the team would finish in the top four in District Six and would finish with a national ranking. He stated that the only team goal was an unwritten goal of at least 20 games. P.C. played two Division One op- ponents this year and upset Stetson, a very well respected Division One team. Front Row (L to R); Eric Smith. Kenny Howard, Barclay Radebaugh, Earl Conner. The coach, Byron Rucker, has served as assistant coach under Randy Randall at P.C. for the past four seasons as well as being both Athletic Trainer and Sports Information Director for P.C. The Lady Blue Hose are now 8-4 and are playing winning basketball. This year ' s captains are seniors Barbara Frady and Simone Clark and junior Martha Williams. Frady leads the team in assists and is the floor leader at point guard. Clark, a for- ward, is a strong rebounder with a great shooting touch. Williams, center, is an experienced inside player with skillful offensive moves. Adrienne Sin- gleton, a junior, leads the team, as well as the District Six Conference after 12 games in points, averaging 23.1 points per game and 13.1 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in steals. Becky Jordan is a third senior whose playing abilities and competa- tive spirit will be missed. The Lady Blue Hose will have 11 strong returning players who should continue P.C. ' s winning tradition. Front Row (L to R): Julie Smith, Susan Thomas. Claude Saleeby has helped the Pac Sac with its many dead- lines and other problems. As the Josten ' s representative, he has given us much appreciated attention and support. The Dean of Student ' s office has helped us in many situa- tions. This asset was very im- portant in our production by aiding us with phone messages, identifying students, and nu- merous other things. The Registrar ' s office helped us greatly with the senior cred- its and with securing student directories. 194 Special Thanks To We want to give a special thanks to all of the ladies in the alumni office and P.R. office for their help with all of our mail- ing. Dr. and Mrs. Orr were very gra- cious in letting our seniors have the senior pictures made in their home. We greatly appre- ciate the use of their home for a new atmosphere in the senior section. We would like to thank Mrs. Wilkes for helping us with our phone calls and office supplies. We would like to thank Mrs. Templeton for helping us with the computer printouts for the photography company during the summer. 195 196 t ' -mi. 1% 200 wmmmm -frj asf s • v r ' i, ' ■■■.■■f;-v«i. j f 201 •V- ' - - ' .
