Deloria Burriss Mrs. Deloria Burriss began working in the Dean of Students ' office seventeen years ago, in 1967. To some, she is known as Dean Burriss because of her seniority in that of- fice and because of her concern for people, especially students. Who else should a year- book whose theme is Students be dedi- cated to, other than the one person who works closer with all the students than any other staff member. Some people may see her only once or twice a year, getting or turning in keys and cards. But others know that she is a hard worker with a great deal of common sense. She is definitely one of those persons whose absence makes others realize how much she does and makes them grow all the more fond of her. It is difficult to compliment her without implying a disre- spect for or a diminution of the other people in her office, but that is neither our intent nor an implication in this dedication. She is as a mother to many students, but first and foremost in her life are her hus- band and her two sons. We regard her as a lady to whom we can turn for concern, help, information, and a warm smile. The posi- tion she holds is not one of the most desir- able because of the chaos she must deal with, particularly during the opening of school; yet she has stayed in it for many years. Only a person with a genuine concern for students and one who enjoys students could and would have occupied her position for as long as she has. A lady ... a mother ... a friend . . . We thank you, Mrs. Burriss, for being all these and more and dedicate the 1984 Pac Sac to you as a small token of our appreciation. RM Opening 5

i;i5,:--? -«5Sj -.-::j?i ? F - ' X » j A Being a student is quite an experience. We work ... we play ... we cut-up. We like opportunities to be alone . . . and together . . . with family . . . and with friends. Studying . . . striving . . . practicing . . . partying .... But what ' s really unusual about a student, especially a college student, is that there are certain freedoms and responsibilities that only a student has. We are between our mother ' s care and the world of all 8:00 classes with no cuts We began being a student the day we were born, because, since that day, we have been learning. And we will be students until we die; but we will all, in the near future if not already, be helping other students to learn. Students are survivors . . . like cockroaches.
