Thomason Library Clinton, South Carolina 29325 152 186 200 There are meanings t o be found in traditions — imper- fect and noncontemporary as they may be. These traditions go beyond the hundred years of PC ' s existence to the medi- eval pageantry of convoca- tion, the eighteenth century formal garden, the Greco-Ro- man architecture, and the pre-Christian rites of invoca- tion to the divine before a sports event. 2 lntroduction 146114 Introduction 3 Our traditions work on us in almost subconscious ways to remind us of our roots in the past and our pace toward the future. They provide a consistent flow of expected events which give some regu- larity and security in this world of a hundred indeci- sions. Traditions give us a timeless perspective on this very transient period in our lives. 4 lntroduction II t n 1 Introduction 5 The events are the same, and the rituals change only imperceptibly. The new faces instill the standard ceremo- nies with vitality each year, but the motions are the same. 6 lntroduction ' 1 ] J M Introduction 7 Each individual personality contributes a special element to make each event a moment filled with unrepeatable emo- tion. The spirit of winning and the fulfillment found in suc- cessful competition remains an important element in col- lege life, though new forms have been added. 8 lntroduction Introduction 9 ' ki ' y ' 1 Ip l %. ■ ' «:, ! ii -■5 : r ' ■■ ' fei ' . Each day with its routine continues the petty pace toward our destiny. lO lntroduction Introduction ll Meanings can be found not only in traditions, but also in relationships. It is the quality of relationships we achieve that enriches our lives now and in the future. Q lntroduction Introduction 13 The people change, but the oaks are still here. The Georgian architecture, the high stan- dards, the dedication to the lib- eral arts, the Christian empha- sis, the pride — all of these will remain with us through our next hundred years. l4 lntroduction Introduction 15 16 lntroduction Women display (heir aggressiveness at the annual Upperclassmen-Freshmen Powderpuff football The tension of the game is reflected in Elliott game. Closing 227 In the midst of all the chaos and confusion in the office, somehow everything falls into place and the book is complete. The 1980 PaC SaC is the cumulative product of a very talented staff whose dedication and occasional insanity helped us all to keep going until the end. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, and spe cial thanks to Norman, who never complained throughout it alli Buff and Dee, who did a lot of everything: Danny, who kept me sane; Alan, my para- gon of organizations Alison, Johnny, Connie, Todd, Margaret, and Barbara, for their devoted labor and stupid jokeS) Mrs. Lehman, for her eagle-eye proof- reading) and Frank, for his patience and encourage- ment. This is not my book, but my staff ' s book — a mutual effort which we hope shows that Presbyteri- an College is and what it can become during The Second Hundred Years. 6 U ' i 338 Closing PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE LIBRARY 3 5197 00118936 7
