Riding his bike, talking to students in the cafeteria, attending the ball games or walking around campus, he is noted for his friendliness to all the students of P. C. While at P. C. he has served as Academic Dean, Head of the Religion Department and Professor of Religion. In these capacities, he has always been the friend of the students. He is also well known as a writer of books and pamplets in the field of religion. With these memories in mind, the senior class dedicates the 1974 Pac Sac to Dr. Joseph Miller Gettys. But How You Play The Game Although they didn ' t have a winning season, the Blue Hose played much better than their record shows. Many games were lost because of one big play by the opponents. In the opener against Furman, PC seemed ready for the game but the Paladins defeated the Hose by a 13-6 score. The next game saw the Citadel Bulldogs taking revenge with a score of 25-13. PC played one of its best games of the season against a strong Mars Hill team, winning with an impressive score of 27-24. Once again the Blue Hose saw defeat as the Wofford Terriers came through with a win of 33-20. The next week the Eton Christians defeated PC by a 7-0 score. Homecoming weekend saw Lenoir Rhyne revenge last year ' s defeat as they ran up a 34-6 score. PC got back on its feet the next week, soundly defeating Guilford 37-6. Catawba barely slipped by PC the next week with a score of 7-6. PC really put on an offensive show against Gardne r-Webb, soundly defeating them with a 28-23 score. Once again Western Carolina handed the Blue Hose a defeat, winning with a 31-12 score. In their final game Presbyterian really played their hearts out against the Newberry Indians only to see a 14-3 defeat. w l ' ?M?2iK i? Griften finds tfie going rougli against these opponents. Presbyterian College has long been known for its academics and fine athletics. This year the Blue Hose football team didn ' t turn out as outstanding a record as the student body has been accustomed to in the past. However, a record of 3-8 is not a total loss and the coaches expect a better year in 1974. This record does not reflect the true story of our games at all. The Blue Hose played their hearts out on the field and the students cheered them on, but fate was against them this year. SPORTS 23 CHEERLEADERS SPARK SPIRIT B-E-A-T, Beat FurmanH Down the field, BIG BLUE, down the field! Kneeling: Jean McGregor, Aileen Avery, Mimi Ewing, Cathy McKnight, and Meridy Buchanan. Standing: Bill Bowick, Randy Jackson, Gary McKinney. Hoyt Jackson, and Mark Jolly. 24 SPORTS This year ' s cheering squad did a fine job of keeping the spirit up within the cheering section at Presbyterian College. The Cheerleaders sacrifice many hours of valuable time in order to practice their routines and cheers. No one really knows how hard it is to be a Cheerleader, or how time-consuming it is, until one actually becomes a Cheerleader. They are to be con- gratulated on the fine way that they represented the Blue Hose at pep rallies and at the home and away games. The Cheerleaders put forth a tremendous effort toward showing the football and basketball teams that they were behind them all the way. The members of any team need to know that they have the confidence and support of their fellow schoolmates, and much credit should be given to the Cheerleaders for their enthusiasm and school spirit toward these activities. Hey! Look at what we can do! During a timeout tiie ctieerleaders do a quicl cheer to l eep the spirit alive in the stands. Let ' s Go, Mighty Blue Hose! SPORTS 25 1974 BLUE HOSE RELY UPON HUSTLE AN! Alter taking a Bluehose rebound, Co-Captain Terry Dover goes back up and hits for an additional two points as the Bluehose detest the Baptist College Buccaneers 78-63 on our home court in Leroy Springs Gymnasium. Facing taller opponents the entire season, the Blue Hose pressed and hustled their way to a hard earned 16-12 overall record. Under the new leadership of Coach Larry Burch, the Hose were molded into one unique team. A trademark of the PC Blue Hose was the acute teamwork which they played each game. All the players worked together for a common cause, that of winning every game that they possibly could. Each gave what talent he had for the purpose of winning. Even though this team tasted defeat on different occasions they were never out hustled nor out fought in any of the games they played. The 1974 Presbyterian College Blue Hose will be best remembered as a challenging group of basketball players. Randy Hyde gives a little extra ettort in the jump circle v hich enables him to tap the ball toward his anxious teammates. 26 SPORTS HARD WORK TO ESTABLISH A 16-12 RECORD The Hose had better do some quick scoring before Coach Burch pulls all his hair out. Using a deceptive move to free himself from a Baptist College defender, Co-Captain Dennis l oon dribbles out of the corner and oo cs for a fast break to put the Bluehose ahead. 1974 SCOREBOARD PC PC PC PC PC Lander Tip-Off Tournament PC PC PC 106 Warren Wilson 78 95 Francis Marion 75 74 Ersl ine 79 ..74 UNC Asheville 68 129 Francis IVIarion 99 74 UNC Cliarlotte 109 74 Mars Hill 70 74 College of Cliarleston 83 Gardner-Webb Invitational Tournament PC 87 Gardner-Webb 97 PC 81 Elon 88 99 Baptist 115 80 U of Wisconsin at LaCrosse ... 97 75 Wofford 73 81 College of Cliarleston 78 54 Erskine 69 74 Limestone 68 76 UNC Asheville 85 86 Lander 75 78 Wofford 71 80 Erskine 69 96 Lander 79 89 Newberry 76 71 Mars Hill 83 78 Baptist 63 72 Newberry 84 76 Francis Marion 77 98 Warren Wilson 83 93 UNC Asheville 86 SPORTS 27 Dooley strains to make two and gets a chance lor a three point play as he draws a loul. SPORTS 37 1974 TRACK TEAM USES HARD WORK Senior javelin thrower Phil Pitts throws only 15 feet from the school record. Larry Rizzo, an outstanding long and triple jumper, strives to make every inch count. Perhaps the most demanding of ali sports is track. To be successful in track you have to work, and work hard. You must also have the desire of a natural born athlete and the determination to overcome the chal- lenges which it presents. This year ' s track team was no exception. The young men who made up the track team worked hard each afternoon, and this was endured by one and all. Each worked on individual events, such as hurdles, high jump, pole vault, broad jump, relays, etc. In doing so, each strived to become the very best that he could be in each indi- vidual event that he entered with hopes of winning. The members of the 1974 Presbyterian College track team were: (trom lett to right): (sitting) John Davis, Dan Adams, Larry Rizzo, Alex Rogers, James Brown, (kneeling) Kenn Milton, George Wilkes. Steve Snipes. Bob Edens. (standing) John Hackett. George Camp. Ed Fendley, Kenny Hudlow. Phil Pitts, and David Fortune. 38 SPORTS SELF-CONFIDENCE TO ESTABLISH GREAT YEAR ' 2 Kenn Milton, an excellent all-around track man, clears the high jump bar. Alex Rogers, an excellent pole vaulter, should break school record before he graduates. Distance runners George WilHes, Bob Edens, and John Davis get in some practice by running around the track before the season begins. SPORTS 39 James Brown, Dan Adams, Steve Snipes and John Hackeit have much potential as sprinters this season. Marc Coker, a senior holding the school record, shows his style in the 440 yard intermediate hurdles. 40 SPORTS As head track coach, Bob Strock ' s teams have posted credible perform- ances in the Carolinas Conference and NAIA District Six meets. Senior Weight Man, Eddie Fendley winds up SPORTS 4T Team Captain David Connolly zeroes in on the target for an accurate slioi. Being a first-year man, Randy Constantine stiows promise for tfie future. Kathryn Garris, in prone position, aims carefully before firing. RIFLE TEAM SHOWS GREAT POTENTIAL THIS YEAR Members of the 1974 Presbyterian College Rifle Team are: (kneeling) Bill Bowick, Beth Connor, Kathryn Garris, (standing) David Connolly. Hay Wyman. Randy Constantine, Clark Riddle, and l orest Secord. Forest Secord prepares to fire standing. 42 SPORTS Many hours of practice is the reason for Bill Bewick ' s success this year. For a second year. Clark Riddle has proved to be an asset. Beth Connor has been successful at increasing her standing score. A new man on the Rifle Team, Hay Wyman strives con- stantly for improverrtent on his scores. Rifle Team is rated high The Presbyter ian College Rifle Team, though small in number and often unheralded, has proved to be one of the most successful competitive teams which represents the PC Student Body. Sponsored by the ROTC Department at the College and coached by Sergeant Major Bailey, Sergeant Major Robinson and Captain Hal Wilson, the team is a mem- ber of the Western Carolina Athletic Conference. Competing against larger schools such as Georgia State, Clemson, Davidson, Wake Forest and Appalachian, the PC Rifle Team boasts of individual victories over such schools as South Carolina State, Wofford, Davidson, and Appalachian. Rick Limehouse, top scorer for the team, has led PC to many of these victories. Being a non-seasonal sport, rifle matches are scheduled all during the year. Before matches, the team practices as much as four nights a week, but most matches are held on the weekends. This activity is available to any student who is interested in marksmanship and who can shoot well enough to qualify for the team. In fact, for a second year, some co-eds are working with the team. The practice of safety, not only with the rifle, but also on the firing line, is one of the most valuable traits learned as a member of the team. SPORTS 43 Does anyone know who has the ball?! Popularity of Intramural Sports Increases Each Year The intramural sports program is one of tine most popular of the extra-curricula activities here at Presbyterian College. This program allows students interested in physical recreation and competitive exercise the chance to participate in organ- ized athletics. The program is supervised under the direction of Gene Sullivan. The intramural program is designed to include all sports of w hich there is any interest at all here at PC and tries to offer ev eryone a chance to participate. Popular team sports offered include touch football, powder-puff football, bowling, ping-pong, basketball, volleyball, track, pool, and softball. Teams in these programs come from fraternities, sections in the dormitories, and friends who gather together because they think they have the skill to win. Competition is fierce and spirits run high in the intramural battles in quest of the overall school trophies. The interest in this program is skyrocketing, and each year the number of competitors increases. As the popularity and interest in the program grows, so grows the program, for it adds yet another facet to a well-rounded education. Fierce competition, un- rivaled teamwork, individual excellence, and explosive excitement all combine to make our intramural program an excellent activity. The Council sponsors extra- classroom presentations on a wide variety of subjects which are of concern to our students. This year, programs touched on issues such as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the political career of Richard Nixon and Salvador Allende, and the plight of the Migrant Farm Worl ers. Anne Harrison served as program co-ordinator. Farm workers are forgotten again and remain the poorest paid, most exploited, and least protected of all American workers. 204 ORGANIZATIONS SKI CLUB (Front to back): Theodosia Rogers, Gary Nicosia.
