Also rare is the professor willing to talk at the expense of his own time and interests. Involved, interested to the point of infecting his classes with some- times unnoticed enthusiasm, Dr. James Skinner stands out among pro- fessors as one whose work cannot he separated from the vibrancy of his personality. His personal concern for the students whose lives he touches is the kind ivhich motivates those students to see a small portion of ivhat an education should he and. more, the profoiindness and intensity of Urging open to inan. Because he represents that which more educators should be. the 1967-68 PaC SaC is dedicated to Dr. James Lister Skinner. 12 «V ' ■v. . ' ' v: In -T!- ' - V  !r- v. ♦ ' 1 ,  ' L . sE liaPim I J . . Among the purposes of the group is the fostering of ambition for intellectual attainment and the desire to render service to the student body and the college, the study of student problems, and the enrichment of student Ufe. This year ' s activities included fresh- man orientation, registration, youth day, parents day, chapel program exchanges with Wofford and Newberry, and distribu- tion of student I.D. cards. It is an organization only in the sense that it has an executive structure, but its complete value lies in the fact that it is a fellowship encompassing all students. This fellowship is expressed in service projects yielding benefits to the student body as a whole. This year the S.C.A. sponsored freshman orientation weekend, Religious Emphasis Week, and headed, with the Clinton Jaycees, the Christmas Stocking Fund Drive to help needy families in the area. Informal parties and drop-ins continued through- out Rush Season which began September 4. The closed rush party held at the Holiday Inn at Rock Hill was a tremendous success. Many old alumni attended the Homecoming Dance in the fraternity suite in October. The Smoker held at the Mary Musgrove Hotel brought six freshman pledges into the fraternity to join several upperclassmen who pledged earlier in the semester. Other social events of the year included Parent ' s Day, Christmas Dance Weekend, Military Ball, and I.F.C. Weekend. However, the highlight of the social season was the annual Hawaiian Holiday held in the spring of second semester. Striving to find an ideal upon which to pattern their lives, the charter members selected as their spiritual founder Robert Edward Lee of Old Virginia. The Beta Pi Chapter at Presbyterian was organized in December 19, 1923. Beta Pi began a successful year with the reception of the J. Edgar Hoover award for the Chapter Ex- cellence presented at the biennial convention in Atlanta, Ga. Later in the year, Joe Dunlap, Beta Pi ' s Number J. was selected as the outstanding Number I of Graves Province. On Pledge Day, No- vember 17, fourteen freshman pledged and joined the traditions and heritages of Kappa Alpha Order. The social year for the chapter began with rush season; Homecoming Dance Weekend; Wild West and the Last Posse ; Military Ball; and Greek Weekend. The pinnacle of the social year for the KA ' s was the annual Old South Ball held in the mountains. The weekend was spiced with beards, gentlemen uniforms, hooped dresses, mint julip. Southern hospitality, the Sharecroppers ' Shindig, the Secession Ceremony, and the Old South Ball. At the Ball Mrs. Kathv Forbes was presented as the 1968 Rose of Beta Pi Chapter. Lynn, Jr. President Dean M. Davis Vice President Charles H. Chapman Secretary Reed T. BoHck Treasurer The Pi Kappa Alpha 1 ' raternity was founded at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1868. The fraternity is presently composed of 139 active chap- ters located throughout the United States and is now among the largest of the national fraternities. Mu Chapter was founded at P.C. on December 9, 1890 and is the oldest national fraternity on campus. The chapter has had a successful history and has con- sistently been one of Pi Kappa Alpha ' s best chapters. Mu began first semester social activities with the annual rush Bar-B-Que and closed smoker. After these two events came the Homecoming dance which was again a great success with a pleasing mixture of Brothers, Alumni and Rushees. On Nov. 17, 1967 Mu celebrated Pledge Day with the pledging of 12 men. That night, a stag supper was held at the Panaroma in honor of these new PiKAs. With the arrival of the Christmas season, the Brothers of Mu held the annual Christmas party for the children of Thornwell Orphanage. With the beginning of second semester, the chapter held its annual Dream Girl Ball in conjunction with Military Ball. The Pledge Party and IPC dance were the next social events on the calendar and were enjoyed by all. With the arrival of Spring, the PiKAs again visited Thorn- well Orphanage for an Easter Egg hunt. Keeping tradition alive, many Brothers could be seen at the beach and at the Carolina Cup during the holidays. Then came the big party of the year, Roman Holi- day, and as usual it was a party to be remembered by all for a long, long time. More chicken was thrown than was eaten, but it didn ' t seem to matter. As graduation approached, Mu again prepared to say farewell to her seniors who had led the fraternity through another successful year- but not before a week of pre-graduation festivities at the beach. Another year is now history, and truly it was a great year for Pi Kappa Alpha. Sponsor: Betty Bean, Columbia, S. C. 138 F. Allred J. G. Bankhead G. S. Beckham R. T. Bolick P. L. Bradner L. J. Its brothers participate in leadership capacities in all areas of student activities. Their seniors party- ing is a uniting force of their close brotherhood. The social year began officially this year with Homecoming and the Rush Party at Rock Hill, featuring The Exotics. Fall Frolics followed. At the conclusion of rush, 13 men pledged Theta Chi. Through very successful rush, a large number of others also joined the ranks second semester. The second semester social calendar was high- lighted by Military Ball, Spring Swing, IFC Week- end, and the most illustrious Pledge Hippie Party.
