Homecnming Queen pRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE suffered through one of its more disappointing) ' seasons in its distinguished football history, Phe Blue Hose could boast only of a to tie against powerful Lenoir Rhyne. The remainder of the games ended in victories for the opposing teams. Sparking the Blue Hose efforts in the backfield were Tony Benson and Ken Webb who repeatedly turned in commendable performances despite the continual losses. Standouts in the line included Bill Bowman, Ted Leahy, Jim McLaughlin, and Mac Copeland. Among the many promising freshmen were Bruce Barnes, Don Bridges, and Hard} ' Ledbetter in the line, along with Billy Sease and Don Kemp in the backfield. Come next fall, these new men, along with returning veteran Richard Shrigley, should help the Blue Hose to impr ove upon their dis- appointing won-lost record of this year. The P. C. grid team will lose only seven seniors via the graduation route. 1957-1958 marked the debut of a new coaching staff, composed of head coach Frank Jones and his assistants Courts Redford and Clyde Earhardt. Already the young staff has shown conscientiousness, hard work, and deter- mination. Through the efforts of these three men, the Blue Hose should have a winning football team in the near future. B A S E T ALL 19 5 8 II T the commencement of the 1956- 1957 Presbyterian basketball sea- son, there seemed to be little reason for optimism in the eyes of P. C. cage fans and followers. Gone were Dave and Bruce Thompson, who had aver- aged almost fifty points between them. To add to this, there was no appreciable height on the team. The Blue Hose quintet, however, came through in superb style. Courts Redford, in his initial tenure as head cage mentor, instilled a spirit and desire in the Blue Hose that was to carry them to an outstanding season of 16 wins as compared to only 8 losses. This won-lost record repre- sented the best overall mark in the entire state. Outstanding victories came against Furman, against Mercer, after Mercer had won nine straight, and against Belmont Abbey, after the Abbey had compiled a 22-1 record. The Hose five also recorded key little four victories over Erskine twice, and once apiece over Wofford and New- berry. P. C. was almost unconquer- able on their home court, as shown by their 10 wins and only one loss. The Hose ended the season by cap- turing consolation honors in the Little Four Tournament at Anderson. Forward Ralph Chambers led the P. C. scorers with a 17 points per game average, followed closely by sophomore Bob Stratton with a 16.3 average. Chambers led in rebound- ing as he pulled in 203. Guards Ken Caswell and Bill Sullivan, with their fine shooting and playmaking, con- tinually added spark to the Blue Hose efforts. Clayton Adams proved him- self invaluable with his backboard artistry and southpaw hook shots. Wyatt Aiken also helped with his rebounding and defensive play. Har- vey Blanchard showed potential as a promising freshman. The Blue Hose, collectively, compiled an amazing 48.5 shooting percentage. The only seniors on the team are Wyatt Aiken and Clayton Adams, so next year should prove to be another victorious one for the hustling Blue Hose cagers. K Coach Lonnie McMillan THE 1958 track team was hampered considerably by injuries and ineligibilities. A severe blow was dealt to the team when Ed Messer injured his leg. The Florida junior was con- sidered a distinct threat in the 100 yd. dash and 220 low hurdles. Another crippling blow was the loss of frosh pole- vaulter Billy Benton due to scholastic ineligibility. Wyatt Aiken, the team captain, was truly outstanding. The Greenville Senior constantly captured overall high scoring honors in the various meets. Wyatt participated in the high and low hurdles, broad jump, javelin throw, and high jump. Curtis Lindner, the 1957 state broad jump champion, again proved victorious in most of the meets. Walt Marshall proved himself to be a rapid dash man. Freshman Ed Browder looked promising in the shot put. Fred Stanley was an outstanding distance man. Promising freshmen included Dick Shawn and Mac McLeod. All in all, the P. C. cinder team lacked even more depth than it usually does. Despite this glaring weakness, the Hose- men still showed a lot of fight, and turned in a spirited performance against each of their opponents. John Brownlow, playing number one. was followed by Guice Potter, Jim Shakespeare, Harry Hoffman, Jim Peck, and Bob Daniel. Highlights of the season included victories over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kalamazoo, and several of the Ivy League schools. One of the most disheartening events of the year for the P. C. tennis team occurred when Miami, one of the nation ' s collegiate powerhouses, twice defeated Presbyterian by the score of 5 to 4. The Blue Hose netmen, for the 19th consecutive year, captured the state tennis tournament, held annually in Clinton. A special commendation should go to coach Jim Leighton and his players, as P. The Hose indicated that they were capable of playing winning ball during the early stages of the season. George Aikens and Bill Dobbins aced the Blue Hose hurling staff. Jim Newsome and Jerry Crawford, along with freshman Ken Nix, handled the catching duties. Sparkplugs in the infield were Tony Benson, Paul Chastain, and Ted Leahy. Benson was also the most effective P. C. batsman. Ed Jackson and Ray Hodge were good defensive outfielders, as well as being dangerous at the plate. P.
