Although the Hose went down to a 27-7 defeat, it marked the first time that they displayed such an offensive threat to a national ranked team in many years. Under the realms of head coach, Bill Crutchfield. the Hose compiled a below .500 won-lost record against the more powerful teams of the area winning four and losing six. The disappointing sub par won-lost record was elevated some- what by the fact that in all games the Hose played their opponent on an equal or near equal basis. The Hose displayed power and skill as they compiled a statistic evenness denied only by the victory margin. Aided by assistants. Russ Murphy and Vic Mclntire, Crutchfield led the Blues to impressive victories over Elon, Stetson, Catawba and Appalachian. In all games the Blue Hose sho wed an amazing amount of spirit and desire as they defeated their opponent. Individually the Hosenien carried themselves well in state wide competition. Ken Webb, halfback, made second team all state while missing three games due to a knee injury. Tommy Warren, team captain and rugged guard also made honorable mention. Tackles Wayne Shoemaker and Jack Copley placed on the Little Three teams along with halfback Gene Butler. A bit of praise should go to the whole forward wall which opened the holes and led the way for the backs. Many times they often stalled offensive threats bv their opponents both at midfield and the goal line. With only a loss of 13 seniors, the outlook for the 19.So season is optimistic. ' s basketball history in notching 16 wins against 10 losses. The highlights of the 1956-57 season were wins over highlv favored Furnian and over Lenoir-Rhvne in gaining a final berth in the NAIA Carolina ' s District play- off. Senior all staters, co-captains Bruce and Dave Thompson led the Hose and also combined to form one of the na- tion s top scoring combinations. Bruce Tliompson. besides leading the team in rebounding, was the team ' s leading scorer with an average of 22.3 points- per-game. Dave was right behind with a 20.9 average after being handicapped a big part of the season. Guards Bill Sullivan and Ken Cas- well played exceptionally fine games on defense and acted as plavmakers for the team. Another veteran, Clayton Adams, proved valuable under the boards and defensively. Two freshmen broke into the line-u]) this season and immediately were as- sets to the Blues. Forward Ralph Chambers and guard Joe Armantrout pla ed outstanding games several times in helping the Hose pull close games out of the bag. The Blue Hose went over the cen- tury mark seven times and had an average of 84.9 points per game which was sixth in the nation, while their opponents were scoring 70.9. A new record was established when the Hose defeated Belmont Abbey in scoring 123 points. Bruce Thompson. Co-Capt. One Hundred Fifty-One Ca-hwell. C;iiar l Nl.lml. Fmwaia Aiken.
