F . c. -0 Billy Moore Manager Walter A. Johnson Head Coach It is rather dfficult to present a summation of the ' 37 football season. Ten games were played, ten lost and only three touchdowns recorded. But we can ' t let it go by jotting down those cold and colorless frets. Nor can we adapt high school journalism and camouflage matters with a thick layer of past glory, school spirit, moral victories and other remote aspects. So let ' s take the middle ground. Intelligent pre-season opinion of the seasonal outlook was lacking. leaving followers bereft of an accurate conception of team strength and prospects. They, expectant of standard Hose stands against Clemson and Furman, and triumphs over Newberry, Ersk.ne and Wofford, were disappointed. SHORTAGE OF MATERIAL Three little words Lack of material, cor- rectly pictures the September situation. A weak, poorly balanced eleven was being groomed to take the field against Clemson, Tech and the rest. Another factor entered into the picture after the campaign got underway to further cut down performance Injuries. The team that lined up against Clemson in the opener possessed some fairly good material, but was too spotty and unbalanced. The group that lined up against Wofford was inclusive of only three members of the original team. So we can ' t blame it on Walter Johnson, the team or any- Caldu)ell0 )ne else. ! m c Ra.-e Kollii. m c B WEETL BjXPTll. TWO FINE STANDS The Hosemen gave splendid performances against The Citadel and Mercer. The Cadets, in full stride when they in- vaded Clinton, were hard pressed in a gruelling session from which they were fortunate in picking up three touchdowns. And Mercer ' s best team in vears came to town confident of an easy victory. They returned with a different a ' .r, after having been set back on their heels by a spirit-crazed collection of Calvinists and won out after trailing their opponents through the half. ONE UNFORGIVABLE LOSS Against Newberry, the eleven appeared sluggish, disinterested and dumb. Frequent fumbles, poor judgment and a mental and physical let-down marked the gloomiest game of the season. SEVEN PARDONABLE DEFEATS Carolina, Clemson. Georgia Tech and Furman reg : stered over- whelming victories over a team lacking in resources, over-charged with courage and fight. They did their best who could ask for more? 67 Is Blalack Tieynald 5 - . . j -Haleamhe Baliuell Erskine and Emory and Henry profited by P. C. miscues, but both clubs were due to win. Wofford beat our second and third string, hut would have faced trouble against the eleven that opened at Clemson. CLEMSON 46— P. C. Walter Johnson ' s spotty line and puny backfield gave way to a consistent battering of brawn and power to lose by a big score in the initial gridiron conflict. Caldwell at end, and Hipp and Boswell at the two tackles turned in stellar permormanc.es. GEORGIA TECH 59— P. C. O Tech ' s Engineers scored a crushing victory over their smaller opponents with a dazzling assortment of passes, end runs and powei plays through the line. • 0P ' ■ The plucky Hose eleven made a meritous second-half stand and held the mighty Engineers scoreless in the final period. ERSKINE 20— P. C. Big Jim Pressly and bis mates mixed aerial stuff with a concen- trated ground attack to win their first game against the Hosemen . in over twenty years of rivalry. The absence of Hipp who was in- H « ' . jured in the Tech game, was felt in the P. C. line. 59 —  It ju «. JUaureBIlmmB s5Q« a afafc Hitch CITADEL 19— P. C. The season was one filled with thrills, mix-ups — ami far too many bad breaks for the Blue Hose. Opening the season with Clemson, the Ho e fought through a very tough schedule in true P. This handicap, coupled with the fact thar very few seconds and thirds were scored by the Calvinists. resulted in several one-sided defeats. The Hose cindermen turned in a very creditable account of themselves in the State meet, however, by winning a strong third. o As a curtain raiser for the 1938 Track season, a powerful crew rom the University of S. C. downed a fighting Blue Hose squad .vith comparitive ease. In spite of the odds against them, the Cal- inists, led by the colorful sophomore runner, John Rawls, took lour firsts, six seconds, and seven thirds. Captain Hipp gave account of himself by winning second and third in the javelin and discus, respectively. Hemphill turned in a surprising performance by winning the pole vault with a clear jump of 11 ft. 3 in., and tied for second place in the high jump with Thompson, a promising soph- omore. Hipp Hemphill Burns Hollis McSween, A. C. Next in line were Clemson and the University of Georgia, both of which spelled defeat for the Blue Hose, due to reasons mentioned above. However, when pitted against teams of their class, the P. C. tracksters came thruogh with wins over Furman and Wofford, showing up especially good in the dashes and jumps. For the third time in State Track competition., the cream of South Carolina athletics met under the flood lights of Johnson field for the State meet, which was held on May 7. Under a steady downpour of rain the Gamecock group fought off the threats of Clemson and Presbyterian to take possession of the title and to end Clemson ' s four-year domination. The Tigers, short of material in the field events, ran a fast relay to place second. Q Z Reynolds eeman Cole Thompson McSween, Wm. C. Calhoun of Clemson and Rawls of P. C. ran the most colorful mile ever staged on the local oval, both men running step for step all the way, 100 yards ahead of the field, and finishing only inches apart. Calhoun lost a shoe on the last turn, but even under such a handicap he was able to stave off the threat Rawls made on the home stretch, to win first. Both men broke the State record. ■ £ Another exciting event was the pole vault. Hemphill, on hi last jump, cleared 11 ft. 9 in. to take first and tie the Presbyterian score with Clemson for second place. Captain H ' pp won the javel n throw with a mighty heave, and Reynolds won the low hurdle event in true style. Rawls ran an- other beautiful race in the half-mile event in 2 min. 1.3 sec. to win first honors. 1 Rawls M % Terrell H 4 Gibbs Buchan The freshmen Tracksters also came third in die Slate Yearling meet, led by P. C. s flash Slick Hanes. who won the mile event and smashed the half-mile record by covering the distance in 2 min.. 3.8 sec. to take high scoring honors for the Baby Hose. Prospects for a cinder team in 1939 are rather promising, since Reynolds will be back to top the timbers in his own style; Dennard to take care of the dashes; Thompson in the high jump, broad jump, and 100-yd. dash; McSween and Kee in the pole vault; Rawls in the mile; Hanes in the mile; Terrell in the two-mile; and several freshmen to fill the vacant positions left by seniors Hipp, Hemphill. Chick ' s children weren ' t slated to retain their title. Withthe material at hand. Chick did a swell job of coaching. The players responded with smart infield play and a fair hitting average, but lacked uniform strength. Prior to the initial contest of 1938. an impressive flag-raising ceremony was held in which Major Trammel Scott, of Atlanta, president of the Southern association, and other notables took part. As a curtain-raiser for a tough six-meet schedule, the tankmen met with defeat at the hands of the Georgia ' Bulldogs, ' ' due to a lack of material and experienced men. This handicap remained with them through (he remainder of the season, causing two more defeats from Auburn and the Clemson Tigers. Captain George Beatty gave an excellent performance in the dashes, back-stroke, and diving, while Steele Caldwell and Huiet Paul took care of the dashes. John Broughton handled the brest-stroke very efficiently, due to his previous experience. Paul and Beattv made very fine showings in their diving throughout the season. Next year ' s team should be an outstanding one with such excellent talent as Buddy Lloyd, who placed in the Mid-Atlantic A. A.
