Thinking of things such as: I wonder what it’s going to be like tomorrow; I hope my flower won’t wilt, and I hope it doesn’t rain. Then Saturday parade time arrived. As I perched on the back of the car I was to ride in, I couldn ' t believe it was all happening to me. The ride to the stadium seemed very long and the two circles around the football field took forever. I sat almost completely motionless during the first half of.the game. The cheers from the crowd as the members of the court were introduced sound¬ ed loud and happy. We all wait¬ ed in silence for the co-cap¬ tains, Tom Hall and Tim Beh- rendt, to come onto the field. My friends told me that when Holly Hebei announced who the queen was, I screamed. I don’t know, I can’t remember. Everything was a blank. I felt so wonderful inside! Before I knew it, I was sitting on my throne at the dance, waiting for the Grand March to begin. I was given my cape and roses by the two co-captains. I felt elegant. The Grand March went fast, and I felt as if I were grinning from ear to ear. The entire event was an experience. My emotions were indescribable. I only wish every girl could have the same opportunity. Lori Melnarik 1 : (L-R): J. Kroil. S Gaddis. S. Matzke, ROW 2: K. Summers. J. Smith. W. The decore utilized deco¬ rative murals, a wishing well, and a fountain to add to the restive atmo¬ sphere. The combined efforts of many Juniors spending long hours of work on the murals, de¬ picting different coun¬ tries of the world, en¬ hanced the evening of over 100 couples. High¬ lighting the evening was the crowning of the Prom King and Queen, Steve Fox and Jody Jaklin . Mitzi Swim tells how she saw the night: “Prom night, when I saw all the couples oohing and ahh- ing at the scenery, it final¬ ly struck me that all the sore fingers, aching backs, and untiring en¬ thusiasm which went into the hanging of the mu¬ rals, crepepaper, plus the dragging of the chairs and tables up from the cafeteria, was well worth Senior Christmas Play Every year the senior class gives a play for the mentally handi¬ capped children of the community. At the end of the play, the kids are given candy and small toys. Comments by several seniors: “I was surprised by how the boys acted. They were better than the girls. “I thought it was really worthwhile. I think the seniors got just as much out of it as the kids.” I was nervous at first, but after I started talking to the kids I real¬ ized they were just like any other kids.” Ji ... ■ • - •: ;? . • ' 32 Forensics Play This year’s forensics play was entitled, “The Farce of the Worthy Master Pierre Patelin.” It’s the story of a poor lawyer who gets his client off the hook by trickery, but because of the trickery loses his fee. Although Rhoda, a devilish imp child, had myste¬ rious ways, her close asso¬ ciates only thought Rhoda was overly mature. Evil Rhoda, although she is involved in the murders of two people, is not suspected due to her innocent actions. When Rhoda’s mother, Christine, and Rhoda’s teacher continue to question her, they begin to suspect something because of Rhoda’s, “I could care less” attitude toward the murders. Because of Christine’s sus¬ picions, she attempts to kill Rhoda and herself. Although the Mother dies, Rhoda lives on to possibly continue her homicidal tendencies. 36 DIRECTOR: Mr. David Arnold STUDENT DIRECTOR: Kris Groth Sue Smiddy Mark Brodhagen Mitzie Swim Sue Peltier John Greer Rick Singer Lori Ott John Hawley Brian Buchberger Sheree Benson Mark Hare Kris Groth Student Council Dedication and cooperation were they keys that unlocked the doors for Student Council this year. Erasing the POW pro¬ ject debt was the main goal, and this was accomplished with the participation of all 49 members. Selling light bulbs, presenting movies and spon¬ soring dances were the main projects which relieved the Council of its debt. This was a most successful year for the annual Christmas Basket drive which is sponsored by the Stu¬ dent Council each year. A Slave Dance opened the school year and proved to be a mon¬ ey-making project. Other suc¬ cessful projects were the Monster Night movie show¬ ings, and the screening of the movie, “Little Big Man.” OFFICERS: BOTTOM ROW: (L-R): P. VandenHeuvel, S. Birdsa III. ROW 2: K. Basketball Season. The 72-73 cagers broke 24 team and nine individual school records. The first Pre¬ ble team in 10 years to win more games than they lost, ended the season with 11 wins and 10 losses. Coach Wall ex¬ plained their success was due not only to increased player size but also to the team’s dis¬ ciplined shooting and re¬ bounding. Other factors in¬ cluded the great attitude of the players, and the unusually large support by the fans. Co-Captains Mike Daniels and Tim Behrendt led the Hor¬ nets throughout the year. Dan¬ iels, who besides becoming the conference leading scorer, also earned the honors of being named to the All-Confer¬ ence first team and the Hor¬ nets’ Most Valuable Player. In individual statistics, Dan¬ iels was the team’s leading rebounder, while Behrendt was the team’s leading offensive and defensive rebounder. MUSE The Preble MUSE, Preble ' s literary magazine, was pub¬ lished by the MUSE staff under the direction of Mrs. 0. Show¬ ers. The staff collected, ar¬ ranged, and preserved in the magazine, the literary efforts of the student body. Other projects that mem¬ bers of the MUSE staff under- m took were a Christmas tea for the faculty, meetings with pub¬ lishers and authors, and the Quill and Scroll initiation and awards. t h BOTTOM ROW: (L-R): L. There is a cover to design, pictures to be taken, a theme to decide, more layouts, more typing, and then, proofreading to be done. Finally, the pages can be sent to the yearbook company, in Kansas. All of this year ' s staff was dedicated — each person helped the other with any job that needed to be done. Mrs. Frisque, the book’s new advi¬ sor, helped tremendously by learning how to do layouts, by typing copy, and by pitching in her ideas whenever problems occurred. In the eighteen years of our ex¬ perience, never has there been a static period. Through the years we have seen growth in the student body; we have seen expanding curricular offerings, and we have seen experimentation in scheduling. This year, in order to give students more free¬ dom and choice in the manner in which they use their time, a variable-modular schedule was insti¬ tuted. Many of our students have shown their maturity in demonstrating that they can make wise choices, and have made their schooling more profitable and meaningful to them. Unfor¬ tunately, our experience has been the same as that of every other school which has adopted this innovation; we have found students who appear to be unable to use their opportunities wisely. Enabling these students to grow in the opportuni¬ ties afforded here is a challenge for us all. P.C. Hamel Principal I selected the following quotation as my mes¬ sage to the students of Preble High School. G.F. Snyder Vice-Principal “A day of the learned is longer than the life of the ignorant.” Seneca 162 A schedule that includes a good number of classes that arouse student interest, seems to prevent the problems that could be caused by idleness or lack of interest. That’s why we guid¬ ance people try to provide a schedule to meet the student’s individual needs. Mr. Lloyd C. Busch As a guidance counselor I value the insights and contributions of students because they keep me in touch with the real world as young people see it. These experiences help me relate, in some measure, to their lives. Mrs. Selma Batal Despite an increasing enrollment in facilities that are becoming crowded, I believe Preble stu¬ dents have made significant progress in academ¬ ic achievement and participation in extra curric¬ ular activities.
