AMERICA eATTLEenouP 'ai ' ue s Av . ., Q5 T fxfs. far fn x A 'w sr o Sm as The carrier battlegroup is the heart of the Navy's projection of worldwide seapower. ln many instances it plays a major role in the implementation of America's foreign policy. The presence of an aircraft carrier and her escort ships just off shore or the knowledge that they are just over the horizon is a great deterrent to our potential foes and provides a sense of security to our friends and allies. On April 14th, 1981, our battlegroup, USS AmericatCV-665, USS PPEBLECDDG-465, and USS CaliforniaCCGN-365, departed Norfolk Naval Station for seven months of duty in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. The fact that our group consisted of only three ships was evidence enough of our superior capabilities and firepower. America's airwing of eighty plus aircraft was equipped with some of the most advanced and sophisticated radars and weaponry in the world. PPEBLE served as a multi-purpose platform, capable of fighting in anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. Our worth was proven, whether operating independently or as a carrier escort. And California, the only nuclear powered ship of the group, proved to be unmatched in speed and endurance. On May 6th, 1981, PPEBLE and America became the first carrier battlegroup to transit the Suez Canal in over twelve years. lt was an important step for American foreign policy and U.S. Navy seapower. Throughout the next six months PPEBLE played a key role in monitoring Soviet, Iranian, and Iraqi ship and aircraft movements in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. We were standing by for any eventuality after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt. There is little doubt that our presence helped to maintain the fragile equillibrium in the region. After doing the job for 212 days, 190 of which were spent at sea, we of the PPEBLE know that we are truly Proud, Fleliable, and Operational. I
