The first, a sloop of eighty tons, was purchased on Lake Champlain in 1813. The second Preble, a sloop-of-war, was built in 1839 and took part in the Mexican and Civil Wars. The third Preble, Tor- pedo Boat Destroyer 12, was launed in 1901 and the fourth, DD-345, was launced in 1920. She was subsequently recommissioned in 1937 as a min- esweeper CDM-209. THE USS PFZEBLE OF TODAY The present Preble was commissioned on May 9, 1960, and was one of the first ships, built from the keel up, designed to fire Terrier guided missiles. During the early 1960's Preble served several Far East tours with the Seventh Fleet. Off of the coast of Vietnam in 1965, she became the first ship of her class to fire any weapon at a hostile force. Preble's helo detachment had the distinction of making the first overland rescue of a downed aviator in North Vietnam. As part of the Navy's Anti-Air Warfare Modernization Program, Preble was decom- missioned in 1969 for an extensive conversion in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She was recommissioned on May 23, 1970. ln Sep- tember 1980, Preble changed her homeport from Pearl l-larbor, l-la- waii to Norfolk, Virginia and began operating with Destroyer Squad- ron Two of the Atlantic Fleet. coiviiviooonE EDWAFlD PREBLE. . Commodore Edward Preble was born in Falmouth, Maine on August 15, 1761, where he began his career at the age of 16 when he ran away to sea on a privateer. Two years later he was appointed a Midshipman on the frigate, Protector. l-le later became First Lieutenant on the cruiser, Winthrop. While on this ship he led a boarding party which captured, and escaped with, an anchored British brig at Castile, Maine. After the Revolutionary War, Preble spent about 15 years in the merchant service, followed by command of two naval ships-the 14 gun brig, Pickering and the frigate, Essex. As Essex commanding officer, he was the first naval officer to fly the flag east of the Cape of Good Hope. ln 1803, onboard his flagship, USS Constitution, he sailed against the Barbary Pirates as commodore ofa seven ship squadron. l-le directed the successful blockade and seige of Tripoli l-larbor, ln 1804 he returned to the United States and helped supervise the construction of gunboats. l-le died a few years later, On August 25, 1807. , TI-IE BRIDGE ATC!-I VV FKEADEX 1-81 UP... AND AWAY CARIBBEAN SEA FAREVVELL, NORFOLK Loving a sailor is not always gay, And loving him is a high price to pay, lt's mostly loving with nothing to hold, lt's being young yet feeling old. lt's having him whisper his love to you, lt's whispering back that you love him too, Then comes a kiss, a promise of love, Knowing you're watched and blessed from above. lt's frequently, painfully letting him go, While you're dying inside from watching him go, Watching him leave, your eyes filled with tears, Standing alone with hopes, dreams and fears. lt's sending a letter with a stamp upside down, To a far away love in a far away town, lt's going to church to kneel down and pray, lt's meaning all the things that you say. And though you know he's far away, You keep on loving him more each day, Being in love will merit your dreams, With thoughts of heaven where love's light gleams. Days go by and no mail for a spell, You wait for some word that he's well, . Then the letter arrives and you're filled with joy, You're like a child with a shiny new toy. With fingers trembling and heart beating fast, You tear open his letter and read it at last, Yes, he's well, and he misses you so, And it's filled with the love you wanted to know. Weeks are like months and months are like years, You wait for the time when you'll have no more fears Time passes slowly, yet lt's gone very fast, You're barely aware it was there when it passed. Yes, loving a sailor brings bitterness and tears, Loneliness, sadness and despondent years, Loving a sailor isn't always fun, But it's well worth the price when the battle is won. Remember, he's thinking of you everyday, He's sad and he's lonely in lands far away, A So love him and miss him and try to be braver, And always be proud of loving a sailor. AMERICA eATTLEenouP 'ai ' ue s Av . ., Q5 T fxfs. far fn x A 'w sr o Sm as The carrier battlegroup is the heart of the Navy's projection of worldwide seapower. ln many instances it plays a major role in the implementation of America's foreign policy. The presence of an aircraft carrier and her escort ships just off shore or the knowledge that they are just over the horizon is a great deterrent to our potential foes and provides a sense of security to our friends and allies. On April 14th, 1981, our battlegroup, USS AmericatCV-665, USS PPEBLECDDG-465, and USS CaliforniaCCGN-365, departed Norfolk Naval Station for seven months of duty in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. The fact that our group consisted of only three ships was evidence enough of our superior capabilities and firepower. America's airwing of eighty plus aircraft was equipped with some of the most advanced and sophisticated radars and weaponry in the world. PPEBLE served as a multi-purpose platform, capable of fighting in anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. Our worth was proven, whether operating independently or as a carrier escort. And California, the only nuclear powered ship of the group, proved to be unmatched in speed and endurance. On May 6th, 1981, PPEBLE and America became the first carrier battlegroup to transit the Suez Canal in over twelve years. lt was an important step for American foreign policy and U.S. Navy seapower. Throughout the next six months PPEBLE played a key role in monitoring Soviet, Iranian, and Iraqi ship and aircraft movements in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. We were standing by for any eventuality after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt. There is little doubt that our presence helped to maintain the fragile equillibrium in the region. After doing the job for 212 days, 190 of which were spent at sea, we of the PPEBLE know that we are truly Proud, Fleliable, and Operational. A f - Tl-IE SCDVIET PFRESI-ENC E The Soviet naval forces have grown at a phenomenal rate 14 over the past decade, as has their threat to America s allies and interests. The Soviet navy is no longer a coastal defense force which operates in the Black Sea, but a blue water navy which patrols all of the oceans of the globe. The threat is multi-faceted and embodied in the most modern ships and aircraft. A small sampling of the Soviet presence in the Indian Ocean is exhibited here by the anti- submarine 'MAY' aircraft and the 'l-IORMONE' helicopter at the top of the page and the guided missile warships at the bottom. The invasion of Afghanistan, the ongoing tur- moil inthe Middle East and the instability in Iran are but a few of the areas in which the Soviet Union is directly or indirectly involved in the Indian Ocean. This growing Soviet naval presence makes a strong American naval presence in the area vital. Life was grand as a lowly Wog But the day is quickly passing So eat your fill and be a hog Before Preble makes her crossing. We Wogs for one last day Have one last thing to say Ye who follow the Shellback way Will today be made to pay. Tl-IE LINE From Shellbacks large and small Comes one final warning Ye slimy Wogs, we'll get you all As Preble makes her crossing. 1'- LT Derry disposes his Wog breakfast Personal for Captain Stone from Neptunus Rex: Ahoy, Captain! l hear ye are winding your lazy way to the royal domain with a ship full of scurrilous, slimy, scalawag Wogs. Be advised that you came close not so long ago. My loyal followers, rays, seabats, whales, porpoises, and seahorses, had prepared a royal welcome only to see you pass us by on your way to Singapore. Our royal displeasure was great and it has not abated. The heavy weather your mates suffered was but a small taste of what our rage can do. Now l find out that the slimy, cowardly influence of your Wog crew headed by Wog Green got you out of my gales into the flat waters ofthe Persian Gulf. So here you come all pretty, shiny and, some say 'rested'. ENOUGH! My rage will not be contained. l realize that the small band of my loyal subjects on Preble do their best, but you have far too many disgusting, backsliding vermin to properly enter the royal domain. My displeasure knows no bounds and my revenge for your Wog crew's escaping me once will be sweet, but hardly swift. Take heart, nevertheless, for the recuperativel powers of the royal domain are vast. l have yet to see even the sorriest of crews fail to redeem themselves, having experienced the cleansing waters of my equitorial climes.
