Those tormenting hours of “cramming” in the library. That wonderful little nightmare, you know the one, where your calculator gives up during a statics exam. Ah yes, and the classrooms — so comfortably air-condi- tioned in the middle of winter, tropical in the dogdays of spring. Adieu Physical Elec- tronics! Goodbye Bursar! (a very special sentimentality occurs when I think of not seeing the Bursar ever again ). Thank good- ness there are no pockets for a calculator in a cap and gown. The sheepskin hits my hand. It is heavy. Heavy with the feeling of accomplishment — like when you finish a big project, or finally grasp a theory that once seemed completely incomprehen- sible. At Pratt, Nutrition and Dietetics majors all take Food 1. But here, the similarity ends. The diversity in this department extends from management to therapeutic and clinical services. Take Nutrition Week for example, students prepared a variety of international cuisine and enjoyed both the delicacies and the nutritive value. Perhaps you could say the heart of the department is Professor Orta. His princi- ples and integrity touch all students in the department, giving depth to the science of food. Giving it flavor. Although the new department compu- ters will further aid students in compre- hending unique diets and eating habits, the eating habits of the students in Nutri- tion and Dietetics may defy even the computer. A stone's throw from the department, Mike’s Coffee Shop effectively tempts these students to eschew their best nutritional instincts. Here, you can find company and warmth along with a cheeseburger and fries. You may even get some advice from Angie or hear a new joke from Mike. Add- ing a dash of friendship makes Pratt much easier to digest. 23 y m7 (LLL VL Lhe ar) @2a @F @ 2 @2 =F GED ME 3 The majority of the Construction Management student body is composed of evening students. We come to class tired from a day’s work; yet, we leave a burning desire to learn. We are willing to overcome the shortcomings of being an “evening student” Our goal is quite clear. Dihexe onstruction Management student is older than the average Pratt student. He or she has gained several years of “job experience” before seeking an education at Pratt. We have field experience and desire the knowledge that will enable us to gain insight into the principles that govern the construction industry. We of the Construction Management Department are a determined lot. + Ww _ The Fashion Design class of 1986 has spent a good and sometimes not-so-good part of the past four years preparing for an exciting career in the wonderful world of fashion. We've acquired an affection for straight pins, straight grains and our not so straight instructors. After being together for so long, sometimes twenty-one hours at a time, we know what makes our classmates tick and ticked off. We know how to get an “Oh, please...” out of Anna and an “Oh, God” from Garth. Setsu, Susan Jones and our instructors have spent hours getting us through the program and into the real world. Joe Pescatore, Rose Fabricant, and Prof. Ohno are a few of the influences under which we've evolved into com- petent, dynamic designers who can smoothed’d it out with ease. The 1986 class of Merchandising and Fashion Management, like many similar departments at Pratt, is comprised of some rather interesting characters. Much of what other people perceive about the merchandising department is true with the exception of a few of us. A few of our merchandising students were notorious for arriving to class fashionably late, but JSashionably nonetheless. The merchandising class of 1986 would like to take this opportunity to explain just what merchandising is. Merchandising is everything that goes into getting fashion items to the consumer, excluding the actual designing of the garments. Contrary to what some of you believe, merchandising people do not spend the better half of their time shop- ping, although fashion buying is one facet of the merchandising field. Unfortunately, our department often gives the impression that “it is better to look good than to feel good?’ but hope- fully by senior year, most of us realize that it is the ability to create concepts, envi- ronments and visual images that makes a good fashion merchandiser. Pratt Institute maintains roughly 310,47 2.2 square feet of undergraduate classroom and work space; of this, 37,297.0 square feet, or 12.0 percent of the total, is reserved for the 159 enterprising students in the Fine Arts Department, which encompasses the painting and drawing, printmaking, and sculpture departments. In terms of undergraduate majors, 73 painters and drawers utilize 14,133.0 square feet or 12.1 percent of the total space of the School of Art and Design, while 11 print makers utilize 7,180.0 square feet or 6.1 percent and 21 sculptors utilize 15,984.0 square feet or 13.7 percent. Since there are 2,766 undergraduate students at Pratt, each using a discrete amount of space, 2.6 percent use 4.5 percent, 0.4 percent use 2.3 percent, and 0.7 percent use 5.1 per- cent, respectively. I'm a Media Major. So why do I feel that Pratt doesn’t like me? Well, they put me in a building that looks like a tent in the back of the campus in Brooklyn, underneath the gym where people rumble and pound and sweat all day. I swear some- times I can hear their perspiration hit the floor. It’s the only basement on campus with no windows. There's no hot water when you need it, the equipment is never avail- able when you are, or, what you get is defective once it touches your hands. If what you do get is good, your dog dies, or you spill something on the instructions, or you can’t read them or they give you the wrong ones; or you don't have a videotape; or you need to tape a once-in-a-lifetime event but you forgot to sign out for a microphone and the technician didn’t think to ask because he she is a painting major on work-study and doesn’t know a Sony M-3 from a cake mix. We were warned of the long hours, but we were intent on fulfilling our original purpose — a Pratt degree in interior design. All during the year we worked, and wondered, “When will it all end?” Long sleepless nights full of square-feet con- struction drawings and design decisions. And the teachers — yes the teachers, each one totally unique from the other, from plaid jackets, to fat psychedelic ties, to designer clothes and leather sneakers. Everyone always wondered about the elusive chairman. We all swore that he had the power to be in two places at the same time. He tackled the running of the depart- ment single-handedly. He'd pop into classes every morning and deliv er a message and then pop right out to continue his rounds in the other classes. Most interesting of all were our class- mates. All a separate chapter in the book of life. We were to see each other almost every day for the next four years. It seemed that the years would never pass, but they did, like a whirlwind, from sophomore year, through a tiresome junior, to the significant fourth. Great friends were made, never to be lost, so many new things were learned. Now it’s time to get out of here and into the Working World. A nine-to-five job... oh dear! 58 —— DUIAT] SOW WadNSVOAT, YOINYSY WII “JUaptsSadg-AIA “JIAPS JOU “JUaptsasd Gl GOVERNMENT 1986 was a year of commemoration for the Student Government Association (SGA). For over a decade, SGA has slowly deteriorated into a ghost organization with a diminishing membership and growing apathy. 1986 marked a turning point where SGA started to repair and renovate the damage that was done over the years. 1986 was the year a new housing policy was being imposed on students, but the students opposed the policy, and denied its implementation. At the dawn of our Centennial Year (1887-1987), the student voice of Pratt has re-grouped itself, and once again has become an organization which represents the student voice. Congratulations to the graduating students. The dawn of a new meaning embarks you as well. As we, the SGA, wish you the best in the future, do the same unto us, for once you were a part of us, and we a part of you. Let us not lose that. Good luck!
