I hadn't done a lot of painting or drawing, and certainly hadn't done much with plaster in highschool. The semesters seemed an eternity, and the endless, unencouraging crits almost convinced me that 1 had made a terrible mistake, and perhaps I should have FOUNDATION ART chosen a field of considerably less risk — like medicine. My three room-mates were so talented, and 1 felt like a schmuck next to them; they seemed to complete the assignments with such ease. In these moments of self-doubt and muddy-headed worries I would head for the bathroom for some quiet moments to really think about what I want, what 1 want to say and do, what exactly my priorities are, and do I really have to draw like Leonardo in order to be a good photographer? Looking back now 1 realize that even though it was frustrating, I learned an incredible amount. I still have a few criticisms of the program, and one or two complaints about a professor or two, but it is a valuable program with a lot of information to give, that won't be forgotten. x 1 y ; J u 2 n g • o u i Four years over and whore am I at trying to got my baccalaureate Memorising homework with overworked brain paintings by Cezanne requisitions from Spain History recorded from Janson's view “Art Principles Part I Part II Then the social sciences humanity as a whole Machiavelli's Prince his utopian goal Classics ol Western Thought read in Gen. Just four names out of thousands of fashion designers around the world. Ready to become part of the crowd? What do you design? How do you design? Why do you design? What has happened? What is happening? What will happen? Three questions. Always haunting your mind. Fashion — is truly one ultimate form of self-expression — telling the outside world who you are, and who you want to be, what you are doing and where you want to go. Four years in Brooklyn trying to understand a profession that is filled with irony, inconsistency, and questions is ironic in itself surrounded by poverty. You design — you dream of luxury, learn to create beauty. For some it is just a job, a carer, for others it is an art, an obsession. Like learning to read right, you start slowly. Freshmen learning to turn the flat into three-dimensional. It seems an eternity before you are finally turning your own designs into real garments only to find yourself wishing for the good old days when you struggled with your first princess line with ease Top LR Stephanie Bonhlio. Charles Goslin is also a staunch advocate of intelligence and simplicity, but I'm not so sure it's as cut and dry as all that. For an illustration or graphics design student at Pratt, it's the little things that count, make us truly love the whole race It's whether or not you can sneak into your roomate's room to borrow his workable fix without waking him up. That isn't just for animatin, but also on film and video productions. It has been a lot of work, but it also has been a lot of fun. I have made a home of the film department and feel rather sad leavinq. Not just because of the new equipment and facilities, but tne new surge of student interest that has awakened much enthusiasm. A combination with the photo department, the introduction of slide presentations, and the addition of computer animation has created a new MEDIA Department encompassing Film, Video, and Photography. I feel like one of the first products of this media combination, and only wish I could spend more time expanding along with the department. But at semester's end, after the annual Film and Video festival, I shall depart from Pratt... until, of course, this summer's annual Film Department boat party. S3j IS! Seasons that divide time here, seeming so long, but really so short in a lifetime of pursuit, or is it a lifetime of pursuit? One and the same, yes they both count as one, as we begin here in Brooklyn. When end comes we realize that we are the teachers of our craft. So what are all the seasons in Brooklyn for? Pure and simple; human interaction; the purpose for making art. And the Youths asked unto their teacher, What of the future? But the size of this department allows for an intimacy that many other lack. Most teachers are allowed the time to get to know the students and their work, and most of the professors do have the desire to do so. In my experience in this department, I have met few teachers who have disappointed me, and none who have done so entirely. PAINTING Back LR Jennifer Hawkes. Gail Downey. Neal Parks. Eung Ho Park. This, however, should not be frowned upon, even though he did go throuqh with it. What is important is to have the freedom and desire to apply the concept to the real world. Well, maybe it's the thought that counts. On the other hand. Bill Fogler stated in design 1983, A Manifesto, the specific content of the declaration is not the object. The object is to demonstrate that the practitioners of design (that's us) have the ability to generate new and relevant perspectives. And this is the essence of our experience in the department of Industrial Design at Pratt Institute The object is really secondary, it will only represent what is truly pnmary. That being the philosophy that brought this object about in the first place Another primary philosophy, relating to visual experience, given by Roweena Reed Kostello, In any visual situation there is always the dilemma of the relative importance of the positive forms vs. the negative volume One should be aware of the possible dramatization of the one or the other. The choice will depend on the character of the design idea. The rest of the quotes come from our work in I.D. Access to space rather than form is the primary human environmental need. Design form should not only identify itself, but also it should identify a component in human behavior In a short view life is a continuum, not a collection of discontinuous steps. Attention to the continuum, rather than the steps is the value of design. The goal of design is the promise of today; it is not the confirmation of a dead, but remembered, past. Design is not objects. It is a response to the possibility of Life Design form itself is not self-defined; it is defined by its presence in someone's life In a log view life is not a continuum; it has discreet steps. It's been a hard day so far, after staying up all night drafting working drawings for my morning class, I find myself in my afternoon lecture with an hour to go. A glance around the table, and I see 16 people who have grown and shared so much together in the past three years, each one of us is so unique Andrea (the girl who would rather be partying) is making a list of things she likes and does not like (she has included me under one of those categories), Loretta's mind is definitely on other things, Patty is sketching away — the girl who never quits, Laura: a quick smile and a glance at her watch, oh, and Allison, I still owe her change from the Tab I got her during the break (I'll bet she likes the circular form of the can it comes in); David the minimalist, is one of the best actors at paying attention in class, Nancy is pourig herself a cup of coffee from her thermos, as Helen is looking over Mr. Morgan's shoulder copying the lecture notes, what would the room be like without Julio, the socialite of Puerto Rico, and Cecilia's tan from her world travels, Chris probably wouldn't have made it through school without Gretchen Bellinger, Bill is dozing off with the sounds of clocks in his mind, probably dreaming about how to build an indestructible building or a Victorian Funeral, Liz is trying to sell her homemade jewelry, Italian imports, or anything else that is tres chic, oh, I hear the pitter patter of footsteps, could it be Francicso coming back? Danny's chair is empty — I guess he couldn't handle a lecture today , I'll never forget him or his disco church, Joanne is but like a light' but her son Danny will be in soon to wake us all up, of course Linda and myself are having our own party, repressing deep into our childhood years 1 1 Jo Right Nancy Whitford McHalft Allison Wwtpbal. From this you learn the First Commande-ment of the world of computers: THOU SHALT CREATE A DUPLICATE FILE. Sure it's been tough, but it hasn't all been bad.
