The Game of Pratt. Instructions: The object of the game is to accumulate enough credits to graduate (134), which are divided into 3 groups;required, major, and elective. To start, each player selects a senior card. (Pull off the white plastic side grip to separate them). On the back of the cards, you will find listed the credit goal need- ed to graduate. Players receive the following: a pawn, a credit slip, (to keep track of accumulated credits), $10,000—(one $5,000 bill, three $1,000 bills, three $500 bilis, four $100 bills, and two $50 bills). A player will be in charge of collecting and dispersing mon- ey (the Bursar); another player will read the chance listings. Roll the dice—the highest number goes first atthe cannon The Cannon: As you pass here, collect $2,000 from the Bursar (except on the starting roll). Negative and Positive Chance Squares: Look up the number on either the positive or nega- tive list and play accordingly. ThePortico Square: Landing on the first Portico Square sends you across the board to the second Portico Square and vice versa. The Schitzo Chuck Square: Landing here means you must change your major by closing your eyes and randomly selecting another one. The Game of Pratt Gate Square: Land here, pick up a gate card, hold onto it. Pay for all credits listed on card ($3,600) as you pass the Bursar Square (screw). Hold onto the cards that you cannot afford. Scoring: (1) list the credit goal from your major card. (2) pay for credits (3) list them under ap- propriate categories on the credit slip. (Credits are added as you go along). Example: Major-Ceramics Credit Goal Required Major Elective 66 40 28 13 13 10 credits acquired 10 13 13 23 26 23 Loss of credits during the game (Negative Chance Square) will immediately be subtracted from the sum of the credits you have collected. 23 26 23 credits acquired 10 credits lost 23 26 13 To change major, keep ac- quired credits and change the credit goal numbers of the old major. Jackpot: A player landing here collects the existing jackpot. All payment penalties from Chance Squares are paid to the jackpot. Short Cut: Follow the feetto the opposite sq uare, or vice versa. The Bursar Square: Pay for Gate Cards as you pass. If the roll to the Bursar puts you past thescrew, you must pay foryour credits before playing the square you land on. If your roll should take past the cannon, collect the $2,000 after dealing with the Bursar. Roll Over Spot: Player rolls the dice again. The only doubles used in this game is a pair of ones (snake eyes). roll again without moving your pawn and collect 1900 times the roll of the dice. The track may very well be Pratt for the time being, but the game remains the same, game of life. In college, often there are no distinctions between work and play... both activate a better meaning of life. In life, we are creative individuals with or without reason. In the game, we are pawns with or without purpose. The choice remains ours... to obey the rules or follow a different star. As individuals we communicate, create, and produce... for whatever reasons. Unity and purpose aid our communication. As pawns we adjust, adapt, cooperate, understand, look up and relate our experiences to life. Whether for diversion, amusement, physical outlet, display of skill, excitement, intellectual stimulation, or merely for the action— anything worth doing is simply worth doing. Dedicated to and in memory of, Tom Huff 1959-1981 The discipline and pain inherent in the creative process coupled with the euphoria which comes with a successful solution, gives life in Willoughby a blend of monastery and whorehouse. A diligent architect might be found cooking burgers over the fiery remains of a model he's spent weeks constructing. A photo- grapher at the end of a psy- chological roll of thirty-six, roams the halls in his un- derwear crying out for Rita. His mother perhaps? De- signers marvel at the use of yellow and blue on macaroni boxes. We are free to let our en- ergies run wild. We see hear taste feel all that is new and different. The chance to in- teract with others of similar nature and talent is as educational as what tran- spires in the classroom. We have stood alone as artists. We now have the opportun- ity to direct our own course as individuals, apart from the safe confines of home. How loneły the artist who never shared the struggle of creativity or the creative struggle for a dryer. How easy it must be to finish as- signments on time without a roommate given to midnight tours of Manhattan. How incomplete an education would be without the bards of the stairwell. Another coat of white paint, another tenant. Wil- loughby was only as unique as we were. What we became here makes us unique always. Student Senate Student Services is that part of Pratt life which takes its name from what it does, but even more from the attitude with which it is done. To serve students is far more than having a vice-president in charge of a team which recruits and gets students in. It’s more than providing a place to work out; counseling or career planning or placement; visa problem solving or organizing clubs; a temperature taker or a housing facilitator; a program opening higher education for people to whom it has been closed. Serving students is actively respecting and even revering each individual because the person is there before you; involved in education in a way that a classroom does not provide. Serving students is an attitude, and for many of the Pratt people who serve students, it is not a career as much as it is a way of life. For sure there are days when the game of Pratt is not a game and when every obstacle possible seems to get in the way. And those days are real at Pratt, but they are not the norm. The odds are low that human error will line up completely against anyone all the time. Those odds are made lower by the good will and affection of the different people who very often refer to the students as “our students” with a sense of uncommon pride. To serve students at Pratt is to be given the rare chance of contributing to the education of people who will make a difference in the world. Pratt alumni were first Pratt students and they fill the world with an impact which no other school can claim. To serve a Pratt studen t is to make an investment in the future of a woman who is significant now and who is very able to claim her place in the world. It is to be involved in the well being of a man whose work will lead humanity through its own myopia; to creative solutions for problems yet unnamed. Those who serve students at Pratt have their own game which is played in the future when the names and faces and work of their students surface in the public world. To serve students at Pratt is to be able to have a very private sense of pride, knowing that you have played a part in the lives of those who now serve you and your world in areas and ways beyond your own ability. To serve students at Pratt is to be part of a conspiracy of concern and a chain of involvement which began before the first convocation and which will last past the final good-bye on the first Friday of any June.
